Hi Funktapuss

Lower crowds at league in Sydney can be explained by the fact that the game is played in suburban grounds across the city as opposed to two huge stadiums within 10 miniutes of the CBD and Sydney dosent have the best public transport from my understanding. Unlike the AFL there isent a fixed season in the NRL (fixtures are decided by TV Networks a few weeks in advance) so fans cant plan late-season away trips. With Rugby League being such a good TV sport many fans take that Option (Ratings in Australia and NZ don’t lie). In conclusion higher Sporting Attendances don’t necessarily mean more passion. In saying that living in Melbourne has taught me to be a true live sports lover.

Your Second Comment is just ridiculous. If there was any sport designed to “stop the colonials from creating their own sporting culture” then that is clearly Rugby Union. Its the upper class game that was played and promoted in establishments such as the military and the universities, witch are key to Colonization. RL, The rebel, working class, northern game made its way to Sydney through the strength of the game (correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t the rugby union authorities try to shut it down through confiscating grounds when it first started) Interesting how RU took off in many other British Colonies, clearly the game that was promoted.

What makes the game uniquely Australian is that many of the rules that make League what it is today were created in Australia (6 tackles, 10 ms, uncontested play he balls, 40/20s). Also the kangaroos dominated International RL for decades and the pinnacle of the sport is played between 2 Australian states.

AFL oddity in west Sydney as Giants and Suns rise

I agree col that heritage Jersey is awesome!!! they should also go back to being called Auckland Warriors!

Brisbane licking their wounds after Warriors hiding

Since this thread is still thriving 4 days later il throw this in there to spice things up:

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/best-of-sport-analysis/news/article.cfm?c_id=1502180&objectid=10632479

an article by Chris Rattue about the superior spectacle that League offers in comparison to Union. Note the readers comments from common kiwis about 60 percent of them prefer League (Union is supposed to have a “religious” like following in NZ)

I know this is completely unrelated to the topic and it is instigating code wars but lets face it with a title like that the thread never had a chance!

Russian rugby league at crisis point

To bad when every one gets on the All Blacks world cup bandwagon the fail miserably every time huh Dave/Davey what ever your name is!

Russian rugby league at crisis point

That comment is absurd and dosent deserve a reply! Every single Home Warriors Final has sold out Canberra in 2002, Parramatta in 2007, and the home final against the Roosters in 2008 sold out in hours!!!!

Russian rugby league at crisis point

You signed it Dave tell the truth! your a closet RL fanatic why else would you be all over RL threads??

Channel 9 let the NRL down yet again

Dave is there any one screaming out to watch Rugby anywhere??? Probably not because its boring as hell! Ironically there’s an entire tram painted in storm colours that goes down Swanston st but they aint on T.V go figure.

Channel 9 let the NRL down yet again

Something needs to happen the season is just over 24 hrs away!!!

Any one who thinks there’s no market or interest for Rugby League in Victoria read this then sign it!!!

Channel 9 let the NRL down yet again

But Chris any thing that Channel 9 put up against the AFL in the AFL states is going to take a hammering!. Last year i tuned in to channel 9 around FNF time and the were playing motorway patrol New Zealand. Although it was amusing seeing a few westies being arrested by the police on Aucklands North-western highway, I would much rather be watching the NRL. Also on grand final day last year hoping to watch the Toyota cup grand final (a product perfect for a Victorian market since the storm under 20s were playing and they were stacked with Victorian juniors) i tuned into channel 9 and what were they playing – an old black and white movie from the 60s that any one can buy for 2 bucks down at K-mart!!

Surely the NRL is going to rate higher than products like these! Another annoying thing that they do is play the late-night news bulletin just before the footy at 11 30 displaying the results and highlights of both games! Very Infuriating!

Channel 9 let the NRL down yet again

Channel 9 is definatley holding the game back. Okiee i read your post yesterday about the Wigan v Bradford game this got me excited (its been a long off season and even the thought of watching a super league game got me excited!) 12 o’clock rolls round and the game isent on!! Any one who says there is no market for Rugby League down here in Victoria is wrong. there are enough expat kiwis alone who want to watch weekly NRL action. And a game as attractive as NRL to watch on T.V definatley has the power to turn a few heads of from the locals. Some people may say but jake, no the Victorians will never take to Rugby League they love there AFL how do we know this they have never been exposed to it!

Im all for the I.C its time for Rugby League to realize its true potential, we need the right people running the game. Would there be a non-negotiable requirement (as Kurt points out) included in the last contract if the I.C was negotiating it??. Will Channel 7 treat Rugby League better and show it into all states if they get he rights??? Im sick of channel 9, Show some loyalty to the code if you want loyalty back!!!

Channel 9 let the NRL down yet again

Il be at the MCG Eamon and il also be at the Grand Final if the Phoenix are there. Il be sending out the message to every kiwi i know in Melbourne to come to both games!! The atmosphere was electric i cant beleive that Newcastle bloke who missed the 1 on 1 and Ifil was on fire he should have bagged at least two more.

Rise of the Phoenix gives us a true trans-Tasman rivalry

And we just won the game 3-1 atmosphere was electric!

The Phoenix can help the game rise up

Go Blackcaps!!!!!!

Kiwis win fiery clash against Australia

Thank you JF, all i was trying to say!!!

Is rugby slipping in popularity in NZ?

Guys Chill!!!! Not once did i say that RU wasn’t the number 1 code in NZ or that the playing numbers weren’t strong and Mr Fuji i couldn’t give two hoots about Fiji. All im saying is that giving it this “religion” like status is a bit misleading!! There is alot of interest amongst other sports in New Zealand. I know many people who prefer League or Football. How many die-hard rugby fans will be amongst the 34,000 that will pack into Westpac stadium for the Phoenix play-off this weekend??

My brother went to Argentina for a school 1st 11 Football trip. He said that flying into Buenos Aires whole suburbs were painted in team colours, at games fans were separated from the crowd with a moat and barbed wire fences, grown men were balling there eyes out after their team lost and away fans were let out of the stadiums half an hr early so that they could pretty much sprint for there lives!!!!

I would say that this is more of an example of a fanatical “religious” sporting following in a country! much more than Rugby in NZ.

Is rugby slipping in popularity in NZ?

I disagree that it is religion in NZ, Alot of kiwis inc. myself happen to think it is a very boring spectator sport! I prefer other sports such as League, Cricket and Football. To say that it it religion in NZ is a bit of an overstatement. Its definatley the number one sport in terms of media attention and the All Blacks are the highest profile team but i wouldn’t call it religion. Football in South America now that’s Religion!!!!!

Is rugby slipping in popularity in NZ?

whups typo! is Antarctica a state??

What will Australian sport look like in 2030?

I fourth that um….

The lack of a Rugby Nation

Dont worry about players it only takes 17 to form a team plenty of people follow league in NZ there is alot of interest in it.

What will Australian sport look like in 2030?

Garbage article Matty!!

No thought has gone into this and it is clearly tilted towards your favorite sports! Underestimate the potential of Rugby League at your own peril! The NRL still has many cards up their sleeve.

IC – looks like it will be in place within the next year, shrewd independent business-minded people will be running all aspects of the game free of any old ties finally the game will have the administration it deserves and the sky is the limit!

Expansion – The NRL has four potential expansion teams that’s four new markets to expose to live RL action. CC Bears are a shoe in, I hope Perth gets the nod aswell. With these two teams readmitted the buzz around Rugby League will be huge. The Super league days will be well and truly behind us with these two teams casualties of the war. With a further two more spots open a couple of TV deals down the track PNG Queensland and NZ can fight it out. I believe NZ is a must a team in either Wellington or Christchurch it will consolidate the already healthy interest in Rugby League.

FTA – As it stands NRL is only shown in Two states, that’s the remaining seven states with no weekly access to arguably one of the most viewer friendly, made for TV games in world sport. This is the biggest factor determining the growth of the NRL. Get the game on TV across Australia and watch the interest slowly but surely grow!

League fans remember this article copy it to your hard drive post it back up on the roar in 20 yrs time so Matt can eat his words!

What will Australian sport look like in 2030?

Great Article Sports fan!!!

I think we are on the verge of a very special season. There are a lot of positive vibes around Rugby League at the moment. The membership drive, IC push and the Storms new stadium just to name a few. Most teams have a key recruit/import and it will be interesting to see how a lot of them go (especially Burgess, Tequri, Carney)

Premiers – Parra
Minor Premiers – Dragons
Big improvers – Rabits
Big Droppers – Manly
Spoon – Cronulla

My Club – Hard to be optimistic being a Warriors fan, You have to question the management and coaching staff. We had a pretty successful halves pairing in Witt/Fein, they got us one win away from the grand final. What do they do pretty much tell them both there not wanted to bring back Stacey (witch was a flop). All of a sudden Pricey was dropped from his captiancey with a year to go on his contract in favor of Mannering. That dosent sound like the move of an administration that’s going places! And Brett Seymour is my tip for the biggest dud of the season! I hope im wrong though!

How will your NRL team fare in 2010?

Mr Cheese get over your self! we know our place on the world football stage. Getting to the world cup was a huge achievement in itself. The three pool games ill be some of the biggest party’s NZ will see this year.Win, loose, draw or hiding our presence at the worlds biggest sporting stage will increase the profile of the sport in NZ. All Black fan id rather watch the All Whites cop a 6-0 hiding than a snooze-fest game of rugby any day!!

Can NZ accommodate a second A-League team?

This 3 week format looks awesome!!! The more games the kiwis play will make them more competitive against the Aussies!!!!
