I agree. I think Essendon go into trade discussions with a ridiculously elevated idea not just of their list but of their entire club in relation to the rest of the AFL.
It’s interesting that Matt’s stat concerning their lack of trading correlates perfectly with a ten year gap in which they’ve failed to win a single final.
I honestly believe that when they come to dealing with clubs like Footscray, they act like they’re dealing with a hobo who they think they can hoodwink. The reality is they have no class at all. Look at the Hawks. They get deal after deal done and generally not with the expectation they’re fooling their opposition. The longer this Crameri stalemate draws out, the more likely it is he’ll leave Essendon with nothing. This would constitute a sever failing on the part of Dodoro and co.

What's Essendon waiting for?

Nice info Matt. Thanks for adding to the conversation. I had the impression Essendon were really difficult to deal with, your numbers certainly bear that out.

What's Essendon waiting for?

The thing is I really don’t think Essendon have any ball to play. As suggested, Crameri can leave for nothing and nominate for the pre-season draft where the Dogs will get him (despite the 4th pick) as they’ve already agreed to quite generous terms which no one in the league will go with.
Essendon can posture all they like, and try and conjure an even higher pick, but I’m affraid they’re both wasting their time and running the risk of getting even more egg on their face.
Sorry Essendon fans, but in this one you haven’t a leg to stand on. Take the second round pick and be happy youve got anything for a player you clearly don’t value enough.

What's Essendon waiting for?

Again, the key is to stop the assumptions. Let’s have the salaries published so this guessing game which leads to all sorts of suspicions and allegations can end. Also, it’s the Swans who are taking the risk and paying the money here for a guy who is perhaps past his best and who might not at all be the kind of person who usually fits the swans ideal character profile.
Is it dodgy that the Blues are about to add Daisy Thomas (reputed $3.5 over over 5 years) to a team who has already copped flack for the nature of Judd’s deal? What about the Cats who kept together a triple premiership team that only lost Ablett? How did Hawthorn afford to have Franklin, Rioli, Roughehad, Mitchell, Lewis and Lake in their team? The answer is being creative with how you doll out your money and how you handle the cap. After everything that’s gone down the last two years (ie Adelaide salary scandal, Essendon drug scandal) do you really believe the Swans would be so blatantly pulling a ‘dodgy’?

Publicise AFL player salaries to end misunderstandings

Perhaps your numbers regarding Mumford are a little more realistic than mine Peter, yet with his leaving combined with White and Everitts and Bolton’s retirement, I have no issue with the Swans fitting Franklin in the cap. Again, as was my article’s main function, I think all of the speculation would vanish if these salaries were made public.

Publicise AFL player salaries to end misunderstandings

Excellent concept. Particularly the rookies vs All Australian under 18 idea. I’d love to see this actually grow wings and become a reality though I fear its too ‘out there’ for the normally conservative AFL. Let’s remember it took a relative eternity to get a draft and then another eternity to even have our present form of free agency.
The players would indeed have to be the driving force behind your idea though I imagine the clubs would be extremely reluctant to embrace it.

Nonetheless well done on an excellent, genuinely thought provoking piece.

AFL should be ambitious with Origin

I think a little bit of a reality check is needed. There truly isn’t any doubt that JR Smith is an exceptionally talented player having an extremely important impact upon the Knick’s season. He’s had 20 to half time alone over the last two games against both Boston and Memphis.

The importance of J.R. Smith

Great to see another of your articles Brodie. You’re certainly right to point out the many and varied erroneous contracts New York have on their books, yet at the same time its perhaps a small price to pay for delivering them their first division title in almost 20 years.
There’s also a strong argument the Knicks did the right thing by not re-signing Lin and going instead with the less expensive Felton, Kidd, Prignoni combo.
In my eyes (and I’m by no means a Knicks devotee) they’ve got 3 players in Anthony, Chandler and Smith who are all extremely good and would log heavy minutes with any team out there.
I get the feeling for them to take the next step and possibly contend for a championship they’ll need to souround those 3 with a better collection than they have now. JJ Redick could be an off season option, as to could Brandon Jennings? Paul Milsap would also be a massive upgrade.

Why the New York Knicks are doomed to fail

Terry Wallace was implementing zone defenses almost ten years before Clarkson.

Is 80s Australian Rules football back in vogue?

Making players salaries public isn’t only about creating fan interest but a crucial component of transparancy in the league. These figures shouldn’t be clouded in secrecy. We should know exactly how each team is using their salary cap both for the purposes of a fair league as well as another way of evaluating a team just as we do the same with statistics such as kicks and handballs.

The AFL must adopt NFL-style free agency

Brilliant article Brodie. Pity the AFL is so set in it’s predominantly conservative ways that very little, if any, of what you propose will ever be adopted. After all, it took an an eternity to get a draft and an extra eternity to have the current form of free agency.
I absolutely agree with your thoughts regarding the publication of player’s salaries and big on your suggestion of opening the trade window until round 5. Both make enormous sense.
I think the big problem is that most things relating to US sports in this country are seriously under-appreciated, misunderstood and mosty reduced to the most ridiculous argument of their system being entirely about money. The last part I find particularly hilarious seeing as our entire AFL fixture is geared around revinue generation.
Again, thanks for a really important article.

Don't take your eyes off Milwaukee

Like your point about Philly pushing to get an above average centre, particularly in a conference devoid of such players. The move was a risk perhaps worth taking, yet one that has failed terribly. I’m a huge Iguodala fan, so I just couldn’t endorse trading him out. Then again, how else to you land players of Bynum’s ilk in this league when you have little else on the roster. Maybe they could have been more creative and tried to do a deal involving Turner instead? God only knows where they’d be without Holiday this season!

Philly have dug themselves a very deep hole

Thanks Nigel. I found them, though you’re right, they are a little limited and not so easy to navigate. Thanks again.

A-League stats highlight best club performances

PS I can only say how unfortunate some of the earlier comments were in regards to your piece. I must have forgotten that any article published has to be argumentative and full of controversy! I for one really appreciated you highlighting what were some really interesting nuggets of information. If there’s one thing football writing does need, it’s MORE numbers.

A-League stats highlight best club performances

Great article Nigel, made more valuable as I’m particularly attracted to the numbers side of sport. Yet, for the life of me I can’t seem to find where these stats can be found at the site you suggested. Can you provide a little more information??

A-League stats highlight best club performances

Another brilliant article, Joe. The game needs your writing. Not sure however if you were having a crack at the salary cap. I guess I just get a little sensitive whenever it’s not given its full due. But again, keep up the brilliant work. Also read your article on Pep today which was predictably excellent too.

All fine in the West, but let's not get carried away with Wanderers

I see where your coming from Eric in regards to Toronto. It is probably hardest to make a case for them in the context of this trade however I’m sure they’d argue that they’ve landed by far the best player in this trade and have done so by losing two players they’ve never exactly been in love with.

If they do manage to trade Bargiani as well over the coming weeks then I’d be really interested to see how the squad shapes up, particularly in the front court. As for the back court, I think they’re now quite nicely set with a core of Gay, DeRozan and Lowry along with Fields, Ross and Anderson (on pace for 100 3’s) off the bench. None are standout defenders but all 6 constitute above average talent.

A seasoned power forward, someone like Pau Gasol for instance, would really make this team both playoff worthy this season and for seasons beyond. Again though, they’d have to make sure they did something because their front court is still quite dodgy at the moment.

The Gay trade is a happy one for all

Gasol
Randolph
Davis
(Next…..)

Memphis are ranked 28th/30 for defensive rebounds, 19th for total rebounds. To me that says a fair bit about lacking frontcourt depth. Afterall their 6 foot 4 shooting guard Allen is their 4th best rebounder now that Gay and Speights are gone .
Where, outside of those 3 I mentioned, is the supposed ‘stacked’ front court talent?

The Gay trade is a happy one for all

I understand he’s had some injuries while his role has also changed a lot since LeBron came to town, though I disagree that it all boils down to FG%. If that was the case and constituted the only meaningful measure of achievement, then someone like Asik would be applauded for his team high 53% from the floor. The reality is of course Asik contributes very little on offence, submitting just 10 points per night. FG% is a strong factor, but simply one of very, very many.

Is Dwyane Wade still an All-Star?

Lakers must trade Howard

Great companion piece Ryman to go with last week’s really interesting one. Fantasty sports, with all of its many and varied and fascinating by-products (including the field of fantasy sports writing) have been done really quite poorly in Australia. We need a fully fledged revolution, but we need the right one.
Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff.

Is a rebrand the answer for AFL Fantasy?

Thanks Brendon,

No, I never compare Franklin to Tippet, rather I dare suggest Tippett is in an elite league of forwards. That’s all. And as for Tippet not being able to kick?? He’s been more accurate than Cloke and Franklin who in your mind are so profoundly better than him.
Oh and if you’re going to highlight Tippett’s only good game as being the PF (which it certainly wasn’t- Only Walker kicked more goals in a really good Crows side last season) well he surely picked a big game to star in.
No issue with criticism mate, but best to make sure you’ve got your facts right beforehand.

Redefining the Kurt Tippett saga

Another really good piece, Joe. Keep up the good work!

Is Farina the 'Benitez' option at Sydney FC?

That seems a really plausible explanation to me, Tom. I guess the only element which would need investigation would be to split each of those seasons up and to see if indeed draws are less common in the first half of seasons, owing to more goals and perhaps less organised defenses. Thanks for your contribution.

Where have all the draws gone in football?
