The referee occupies a unique position on the field. Tasked with managing the game – and, let’s be fair, without the referee no game…

That’s a pretty good team. The pack is very strong and will certainly provide the Boks with a good challenge. The midfield will be a huge clash and could determine the game. Looking forward to this
All Blacks debut for Aussie-raised rookie, Mo'unga back at 10, Springboks rocked by death of captain's dad
I’m not sure it matters who is in the back line if the game plan is for the 9 and anyone else to kick the ball away every time you get it. The Wallaby kickers are inaccurate, don’t kick far and don’t seem to make good decisions about what type of kick to use and when. We can all blame the lack of contest but it’s hard when even the kicker doesn’t seem to know where the ball will be going. I do find all the criticism of Cooper a bit much, I think he got 5 passes from White all game and at least 3 of those were with Bok players arriving at the same time. Not sure that anyone else could have done any better. I do agree giving Carter Gordon more time, but I think he’ll struggle under the same pressure. lets hope the forwards step up a bit better this week.
WILL GENIA: It's vital the Wallabies beat Argentina otherwise self-doubt will creep in, three key selections
Pfft! Ain’t going to happen. Boks will be going home with their tails between their legs

That’s a strong team. The game is going to be fantastic
Eztebeth leads Boks, Willemse at 10 but Wallaby destroyer misses out altogether for All Blacks clash
Wow! I’ve seen games viewed with rose coloured glasses before but this is the best yet. While I love the optimism and refusal to go down a negative path this really is trying to polish a turd so it smells of roses and glistens in the sun. I think you’re correct in Jones not changing things, he’s spent quite a few months telling people what he’s going to do and even if he had the time to change, his ego wouldn’t let him because that would mean admitting he’s wrong and there is no way he will ever do that. For the same reason he’ll stick with Vunivalu because after all he’s the best coach in the world so he’s the only one in the world who I can turn him into the worlds best winger. Unfortunately despite the positive ramblings and outlook, things are going to stay the same. Underwhelming performances with distractions from the master of talk to try and focus elsewhere. While at the start it was all about the Bledisloe, TRC and RWC we know it’ll quickly change to focusing on the RWC as his goal and then maybe the LIons and next RWC when that also disappears
ANALYSIS: Eddie Jones has no time for passion projects in World Cup year, kick heavy gameplan is here to stay
Karevi has said though that they have lots of learnings from this game. Surely that means things will change 😢 😢 😢
'What was with that defensive set up?': Jones-Hodgson combo must get up to speed fast with Fisher absence clear to see
exactly. Jones love affair with league is going to continue to hurt the Wallabies
'What was with that defensive set up?': Jones-Hodgson combo must get up to speed fast with Fisher absence clear to see
Not really. A totally different game with a totally different structure and style. He played and coached league long enough to lose his rugby smarts. The defence in the weekend clearly demonstrated that, but with Jones fascination and love of league it isn’t going to change anytime soon

New Zealand and SA don’t and that works for them

I’m not sure why anyone is surprised that a league payer with very little rugby experience or knowledge has no idea on how to defend against rolling mauls and a game where the tackle is the start of the contest, not the end of it. I’m sure he can teach players how to tackle high to kill the offload and how to run forwards and back until the ball comes their way, but honestly expecting him to be able to do more than that was always going to be a dream.

Nice work mate. personally I think the whole cohesion thing is overdone a bit. Sure the more players play together the better they’ll be, but good players can adapt and at international level the players should be good enough to play with any other good player inside or outside them. Interestingly the ABs have a 9,10,12,13 of Highlander, Crusader/Chiefs/Blues, Hurricane, Blues where none of them play together at the next levels down and their backline seemed to work ok. I think this week will be interesting and I’m especially interested in seeing Eddie’s picks and his reasoning. Will he keep the players he talked up like the one who can be the best wing in world rugby but who demonstrated – yet again – that he doesn’t understand the game or his role in it, or will he face up and make changes. Also looking forward to his relationship with the media, we know he likes to try and focus them away from his problems and it’ll be interesting if more ask some straight hard questions how he responds
Are these green shoots or weeds in Eddie's garden?
Big call from Poidevin, the Argies looked better in the 2nd half than the Wallabies did all match. Maybe it’s a smash and grab marathon full of high tempo, no possession (except when you score tries) kick and run play that Eddie knows but no one else does.
'It's a marathon': Wallabies not panicking as Kerevi puts hand up to start against Cheika's Pumas
Yeah but most of that was when he had players and assistants that were with the previous head coach. As soon as he started changing things the wheels fell off

Surprised he’s not also blaming Deans

Perhaps not celebrating the loss, but definitely ready for some comeuppance after all the pre game comments
The Wrap: Like Hillary at Everest Base Camp, Eddie Jones has a mountain ahead of him
As coach of England Jones demonstrated time after time that he is either a poor selector, or that he sees something no one else in the world sees. His comment pre match that Vunivalu could be the best rugby winger in the world is just so typical of this. The fact that he believes he knows more than anyone else and then follows up poor selections with an ego that won’t allow him to think he was wrong was a huge part of his failure with England. It seems that this will be the same with the Wallabies

Nice piece Geoff and summarizes the two matches well. It will certainly be interesting to see if Jones is able to look back and admit that he may have got a couple of things wrong and then make the changes that will make them better. After a few months of some outlandish comments, that to be fair raised the status of rugby to a place it hasn’t been for years, the rubber meeting the road has been a huge downfall. The issue Jones faces now is that unless there is some improvement all those outlandish statements about winning the Bledisloe, TRC and RWC are going to cause a huge backlash that could be quite devastating. You can just imagine what V’Landers is thinking right now and the biggest surprise to me is that we haven’t heard anything from him yet. It’s certainly looking like a tough year going forward.

Mate I really don’t get the love affair with Hodge. I get he’s versatile but he’s poor in every position and there’s 3 people who play each one better. He makes too many dumb mistakes in every game
Studs and duds: 'Horrendous' Vunivalu 'will cop a caning', Quade Cooper 'not the answer' as Carter stakes RWC claim
Mate Eddie’s had a few months of freedom where he’s been able to say what he wants with no consequences because he’s not had to prove any of it. I do love that he put rugby in the spotlight again but unless he turns the results around the backlash will be tough. I can just imagine V’Landers is winding up and getting ready to fire up. What will be interesting will be to hear what Eddie “The Mouth from the South” comes up with this week
Studs and duds: 'Horrendous' Vunivalu 'will cop a caning', Quade Cooper 'not the answer' as Carter stakes RWC claim
If Carter Gordon starts with White at 9 he’ll look as poor as Cooper did. The issue isn’t with the 10, it’s with the 9 who doesn’t give them the ball
Studs and duds: 'Horrendous' Vunivalu 'will cop a caning', Quade Cooper 'not the answer' as Carter stakes RWC claim
Carter looked good because McDermot gave him the ball. White must have given Cooper 5 balls all match. He’s the biggest reason the Wallaby backline doesn’t fire, just like he’s the biggest reason the Brumbies backline doesn’t fire

Doesn’t really matter who is at 11, 14 & 15. With Reiko at 13 they’ll never see the ball in space anyway. A bit worried about Clarke’s defence. let’s hope it was an Auckland thing and not a player thing
