Yes, more likely than not they will be better for the suspensions AND the education.

AFL News: Players Association slams 'double standards' in Finlayson ban, Cats to weigh up Thomas lifeline

Would you have the same view about racial vilification?

Hawthorn built a dynasty on left footers. They should go back to the future….

The AFLPA is justified in pointing out the inconstency between the sanctions individally imposed on Clarkson and Finlayson but claiming that the 3 weeks handed out to Finlayson was unfair is tone deaf nonsense.

3 weeks was right based on Findlayson’s prompt admission and obvious contrition.

What the AFL was thinking back when dealing with Clarkson is anyone’s guess although $20k is a not an inconsiderable whack. The 2 weeks shouldn’t have been suspended obviously.

Yep. Runs in the family…

Footy Fix: Does the Essendon Edge not apply to Connor Rozee or something?

Who would you really want from the Essendon list?

Draper?, Merrett? Probs…
Stringer? Parrish? McKay? Hmmm maybe…
Anyone else? Nah…

AFL concedes the umps got it wrong – well done.

Umpires' anti-Ginnivan bias has reached a new low - it's time for the AFL to step in

Hawthorn Football Club kicked up a stink about Ginnivan? When? Jeez, he’s played 3 games for the Hawks. Maybe you’re misremembering the Pies flagging his treatment last season?

Guerra? Never synonymous with head high contact except when Selwood perforated his ear drum with his forearm. Poppy I’ll give you but the guy was only 5 foot 4 so…

I don’t recall the Hawks raising any stink with the AFL other than a lack of HTBs after laying a record number of tackles in late Clarko days.

Good read, Matt.

I take Mitchell’s post match comments to be code for “we are definitely taking this to the AFL”.

Watched both incidents. The arm movement is a protective and naturally reflexive movement after the high contact – neither caused the tackler’s arm to slide up around the neck which would justify calling ‘play on’.

Umps got both wrong.

Preventing concussion seems to be (rightly) de rigueur at the AFL but neck injuries could end up a significant liability for it as well.

I noticed special commentary presenter Joel Selwood had nothing to offer at any stage of yesterday’s broadcast despite it being a hot topic…

Most sports don’t have a similar policy – maybe the AFL should can it and just rely on independent match day testing to keep players honest…saves all the sub rosa manoeuvring that current happens within clubs…

'Strongest drugs code in sport': AFL set to revamp three-strikes policy amid new 'secret immunity' bombshell

Most sports don’t have a similar policy – maybe the AFL should can it and just rely on independent match day testing to keep players honest.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon responds to bombshell drugs claims, defends 'intervention' testing

It seems to mean that the 3 strikes element of the policy is redundant as players are being screened to avoid any strike unless they are too stupid to use the enormous safety net the AFL has put in place for them.

'Strongest drugs code in sport': AFL set to revamp three-strikes policy amid new 'secret immunity' bombshell

I tend to agree with Jimmy Bartel who thinks the policy, while ostensibly based on a protective medical model, allows the AFL and doctors to collude with players to avoid the requirements of the WADA drug code.

Hmmm….WADA consider cocaine to be performance enhancing if detected on game day…

Albanese asked to intervene as former Dees doctor drops bombshell over players dodging drug tests

Poor Travis Tuck – the only player to have been pinged under the 3 strikes policy – presumably since then doctors have been screening out players who are at risk of testing positive on match day.

Haha. Interesting…

Andrew Wilkie has the first crossbench question. He asks Anthony Albanese:

Prime minister, why has your government twice prevented me from tabling these documents which contain evidence of appalling misconduct by AFL executives and some team staff? Why you trying to keep them secret? Or can I walk down and give them to you personally right now?

Albanese:

I note that walking around the chamber is disorderly, but I do note that the member for Clark has always, always had access to me, as other members do.

There is not a member of parliament here, including over there, up there, or behind me, who has asked to see me or made a phone call who has not had a call returned. Not one. Not one.

That is the way that I deal with parliamentarians. I deal with senators the same – with respect.

In general we have an approach that when documents are requested to be tabled, if people want that, the normal process would be to ask, as when I was a member of the opposition and wanted something to be tabled, if I was serious about it getting tabled, I would ask, show to the person who was the person at the despatch box, and receive that.

But I am aware that the member for Clark has made allegations. Those allegations, I’m not aware of whether they are correct or not.

You know, I have a big job. My job is not to, on the job description, isn’t the control of the Australian Football League. But if issues are raised, the Sport Integrity Australia is aware of the issue, and they have begun their assessment, and I’m sure that the member for Clark will forward any documentation to the appropriate body.

Pollies make bad decisions without being impaired by drugs or alcohol.

The Speaker can jettison a MP who is determined to be misbehaving but the Constitution doesn’t allow for a p#ssed pollie to be sacked.

Like it or not, Parliament is not like any other workplace.

Amen St. Frank!

Hmmm….I agree that Parliament House may have cultural issues that don’t meet modern workplace standards but this seems a false equivalent here.

After all, betting on political outcomes doesn’t come close to betting on Australian sport.

Good post but you make an excellent case for Wilkie raising it given the AFL seem to be tone deaf and/or complicit. Not sure that’s overmilking it but you raise some well considered points.
