I am not an AFL fan not because I do not appreciate AFL but because I have never enjoyed the opportunity of experiencing a game. (I must admit I tell people I am a Sydney Swans fan when pushed but that is only because I reside in NSW. Must stop doing that!)

Wow…Didn’t think I could dislike Gus Gould anymore. Yet post watching and cringing at last nights interview on channel 9 the guy seems to be a perpetual liar and the manner in which he was patronizing Griffin was truly difficult to watch. Did not think the Channel 9’s footy show could get any lower! Not a good look for Fittler and Molan. Will not be watching again, what a waste of time!

Thanks for the article Mary…Yep I think peeps have forgotten that referees are human and humans make mistakes.
The perpetuation of negative talk via channel 9 commentators (I do not have Foxtel etc) regarding referees has reduced the game for me, not the referees themselves. It is annoying when the referee makes an error (particularly when it is against your team), but you get over it. However, the persistent pessimism from ex-footballers and players whom can barely string a sentence together puts a dampener on the game. I have started viewing the games with the volume muted, as I was yelling expletives not at the referee’s but alternatively at the idiots speaking.
Do we care about the health and wellbeing of our referees?

Refereeing crackdown the right thing for the game
Hi Matt,
Thank you for the article. Unfortunately, I do not have access to Foxtel and consequently, have to watch channel 9. I love rugby league but I am a university student perusing an occupation in the arts (apologies for being stereotypical) and do not have anybody to chat to about the sport. I assumed that what Johns, Vaughan, and Gould were saying this past week was what a majority of league supporters believed. It is great to know that I am not crazy for thinking the referees have a right to ‘take back the game.’
