Agree 100% with all of these except about CLL instead of foley. Just don’t see how CLL will straighten the wallabies attack or bring anything remotely better than foley. He played OK (with a couple of good games) in super rugby behind a dominant pack – would almost definitely be found at in test rugby. Anyone who calls foley out on his defence needs to look at CLL for this in particular.

Apart from that completely agree re wingers and centres especially

Six talking points from Wallabies vs Springboks

Great analysis in this.

I reckon the Brumbies were genuinely woeful and probably just a bit intimidated by the magnitude of the game. That crowd was immense! Also full credit to the Jaguares – they play a very exciting brand of footy and I thinkw ould be a very good bet for Sat night!

Why things fell apart for the Brumbies in Buenos Aires

Love how this article manages (somehow) to unravel the commercial conflicts which seem to be plaguing the game at the professional level globally… It may be naive of me but I just think everyone is being too fatalistic, cynical and generally dispirited about the state of the game atm. Sure there are issues at the moment but I just don’t think things are so bad…

This is the end: Rugby’s Nations Championship abandoned

Some excellent views here and completely agree that pursuing self-entitled league players is a far inferior option to developing genuine youth rugby talent. Disagree though that it is “it is pure luck that a talented group of players has committed the first few years of their careers to the code, rejecting advances from NRL teams to pursue Wallaby gold rather than Kangaroo green”. It has been very apparent to me the fantastic and hard work that has gone into retaining this talent on and off the field. Not only have the super rugby sides (At times begrudgingly) allowed the U20 talent to play in the u20 team, demonstrating compromise and foresight, but there have been enormous efforts to ensure that these young players are all retained in rugby, through contracts straight out of school, exciting incentives etc. I’m the first to say RA have got it wrong in the past with retaining young talent, but give credit where credit is due and say that this was not pure luck, but the product of some pretty serious negotiation and hard work.

The Junior Wallabies offer RA a way forward – just don't call them a 'golden generation'

If your beliefs dictate that you should forego your career to post hateful messages on social media, then you clearly subscribe to a pretty bizarre set of beliefs. By all means believe what you want, but I don’t see how espousing potentially harmful views on social media is in any way ascribed to christians in biblical and/or other church teachings.

The Waratahs' leaders, not Israel Folau, have led to this disastrous season

If you watched the game on Friday night then you would realise that Phipps was arguably the best of a bad lot, and that your criticism of him and hooper is completely nonsense. They criticised a player who had repeatedly (with warning) vilified a marginalised group of society. They backed the hard stance taken by their employer. Folau refused to budge when asked to take posts down and acted like he was bigger than the game.

The Waratahs' leaders, not Israel Folau, have led to this disastrous season

This is a fairly flawed argument. Both Cricket and rugby are world wide sports in relativity to almost any other sport, bar soccer, which is clearly the most universally played game?

Kalyn Ponga to the Wallabies? Ha!

Australia have lost one game against wales since 2009, and it happened last year amidst a trend of bad results. Australia hasn’t lost to fiji since 1954

Kalyn Ponga to the Wallabies? Ha!

Hey Joe, why are you so negative about the Wallabies and Australian Rugby in general? Ponga grew up (at least for most of his childhood) in Australia, is playing for Queensland in Rugby League (and probably the kangaroos) and would hardly be the first maori/polynesian person to play for the wallabies despite not being born here?
I have no issue with calling out Cheika for poor coaching but how can you be so negative about a guy making an effort to get an extremely talented player to play for the wallabies, even if there is only a very slim chance/no chance at all of it happening?
The same people giving him a hard time about it are the ones who moan when Australian union players go overseas, or alternatively go straight from schoolboy rugby into league. What’s more, I don’t think any kiwi realises how diabolically bad a dying rugby union game in Australia is for their own rugby interests. Any money new zealand makes from rugby is tied up with Australian (and south african) television deals. So when Australian rugby goes down the toilet, chances are heaps of kiwi players will head to Europe too. Cheers

Kalyn Ponga to the Wallabies? Ha!

Fair comment PeterK… but disagree that this is Foley’s best. Re-watching Foley v England, in one of the biggest games over the last 10 years IN ENGLAND, affirmed to me that at his best, he can drive a wallabies team to great things.

The Wrap: Foley TKOs Cooper as Australian conference tightens up

Agree that CLL looks really good against some teams – I am not sure how he would fare against a top All Blacks team? By the same token though I doubt any Australian 10 is up to that task…

The Wrap: Foley TKOs Cooper as Australian conference tightens up

Good article. Possible over analysis though. I think that Australia is just a really polarising sports market, and that as soon as the Wallabies begin to win consistently, crowds will return. Simple as that. Look at the Reds crowds of 2011 vs now — the one variable in that equation is the success rate of the team. Same on a broader scale for rugby in Australia.

Australian rugby must innovate or perish

Wallabies get Bledisloe boost with Matt Toomua headed back to Australian rugby

Disagree about relegating arguably our best attacking back (Beale), and putting Banks in at 15? Banks has had a couple of good super rugby games at the Brumbies, but has hardly shown any genuine world-class abilities under the high ball and is certainly far more of a development prospect than one that should be thrown into the cauldron of a Bledisloe Cup match.

Agree with your forwards and am excited by Jed Holloway finally showing that he is playing to his potential. Also agree with you regarding English as the most viable option at 13 – although Rona’s performance on the weekend showed some attacking flair that may put him in the box seat for the 13 jersey.

Wallabies get Bledisloe boost with Matt Toomua headed back to Australian rugby

Fixing the kicking problem has to start at number 9 – when Phipps was there, all of the pressure went straight onto foley, both for attacking and to a large extent (with the exception of Beale providing some relief) defensively minded kicks. Will be great to have Genia back in the side as it is hard to see a world class team beating world class opponents without a 9 that can kick at all…
