Agree mate, the coaching side of things isn’t ideal at all. If it’s the current solution to try and eradicate rule breaking it’s not working
Blow that whistle, ref
Yes. the rule is no forward passes, not some allowed some not…
I agree leniency needs to rein for things like sin bins, whether or not someone has contested for a ball or taken his eyes off it etc, but forward passes are black and white, you can’t do it.
If there are 30 or 40 penalties, bad luck, yes it would look stupid but I’m pretty sure those players were benched, dropped, fined internally, or embarrassed and would work on that aspect of their game.
Players don’t like losing, if they were penalised for rule breaches and lost games, they’d smarten up pretty quick
Blow that whistle, ref
agree mate. At the end of the day everyone would need to be onboard, meaning the refs, the players, the coaches and the fans. Short term pain for long term gain
Blow that whistle, ref
AGordon correct me if I’m wrong but I think there is some kind of conference at the beginning of the year with the coaches to do something similar, plus refs attend pre-season sessions to help teams prepare. I think it will take an off-season, so that teams can properly adapt, because look at the Bulldogs for example, half of their forward pack couldn’t adjust to a quicker game, they’re just too big.
Blow that whistle, ref
That’s true Fatman, but I’d prefer that in the short term until teams realise it leads to conceding 50 points a game and will stop. Agree Bunney I’d say it’d last a few months if that
Blow that whistle, ref
exactly Simon, they’re re-inforcing bad habits, and in turn teaching the next gen the same thing
Blow that whistle, ref
that’s a fair point Barry, totally agree. The pushing the boundaries has to stop sooner or later, or people will turn away. Michael Ennis said it on Sterlo, how do you explain to the average fan that there is no send off for Sia, no binning for De Belin or Widdop but Lusick goes? It’s all so grey and confusing, the only way I see it is to call it all and put the onus back on the player
Blow that whistle, ref
maybe instead of superimposing the advertising on to the ground, we can put fake people in the seats to make it look sold out!
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
I agree thursday night has to do with it also, again a scheduling issue which is the main point. I’m glad Dragons fans voted with their feet, it’s not good enough, time the NRL listened
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
If it continues that way, which it seems, the suburban grounds will be dead and buried. What I’m worried about then is that a certain demographic of fans will walk away from the game and therefore less fans to head to the mega stadiums
I think clubs need to show the government and NRL etc. that they can sell out suburban grounds and therefore have a space in the game, even if it’s 1 or 2 a year
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
Yes but Barry the draw is out before we know how well these teams are going. People thought the Raiders were finishing low, turns out the tigers get 4 of the top 6 teams. What I meant wasn’t quality in terms of ladder but more the nostalgic quality.
After reading and debating all day my opinion has shifted to the possibility of reducing suburban games, lets say 2-3 each venue but have them as proper suburban games, Sydney vs Sydney, derbies if you life, keeping old schoolers like me happy, but also slowing shifting to the bigger stadiums which even I know is coming, we can’t stop it
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
and I get called the AFL stooge haha, sounds like you love the game
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
it’s not hard is it… summed it up perfectly
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
I don’t dispute that, so how is that the pot calling the kettle black? I pointed out Manly fans don’t travel, I never said Tigers fans do
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
I can admit when I’m wrong, so I appreciate the data used here, thanks mate, it’s handy to know.
I still do argue though that scheduling interstate teams impacts on crowd figures. Obviously more people turn up when their team is winning, that’s not new news.
Could a solution be reduce the games played at these grounds, lets say 2-3 each per year, but actually make them worth while? Tigers v Parra, Dragons v Bulldogs, Bulldogs v Parra etc?
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
what’s this professional vs suburban club thing? Are you saying the Dragons Tigers and Bulldogs aren’t professional clubs?
Aren’t you the one who said that rugby league would be better off with one referee, two touch judges and 2 in goal refs, isn’t that in the past and gone too?
Like you wanting no bunker, I don’t want to lose tradition
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
I also need to add, although probably quite obviously, I have a thing about suburban footy. I see the attraction of the bigger stadiums and the need for it, I really do. As a Panthers supporter I know that games may be moved to the new facility at Parramatta and this diversification will be beneficial in the long run.
I just hope the scheduling can be a little more kind to teams with suburban grounds. As much as the tigers, dragons and bulldogs rely on bigger stadium money, they also rely on foot traffic at these smaller grounds, and as much as we need to cater to the younger generation as Andrew pointed out there are also important fan groups other than those who need wifi at the ground.
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
I think that’s it though, the NRL doesn’t want big TV dollars and big crowds, it just wants big TV dollars
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
I don’t disagree, I just think it’s unfair to send mostly interstate teams to these smaller grounds. I hope it’s an isolated event this season
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
then tell me why no one turns up to games at ANZ and allianz then?
If the Wifi and food and comfortable seats are so attractive, why did souths get 7,500 to a game last night?
Did I say all fans want that suburban ground experience?
And did I say every game should be played at suburban grounds? I’m saying instead of killing them off, and a select fan base with it, how about schedule some decent games there
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
yeah that is true, very dependent on form.
I also agree that the pendulum has swung too far in the way of TV over bums on seats. I understand that 8pm is a good start for TV, but not so much for 12 and 13 year old kids
Can suburban footy be saved from a slow death?
That will do for today
Once again it was the Jamaicans and Americans dominating the track and field today, medals fell and finals were reached, thanks for joining me and I look forward to watching the events transpire over the coming days
Congratulations to the Aussies who competed today, you all did well! especially Brooke Stratton in the long jump final, well done with 7th!
