Unpopular opinion, but for some of the players mentioned it would be beneficial for them to go. Aus needs to adopt an open selection policy as done in SA.
The alternative is super clubs scrambling for cash to match big offers from OS or RugbaLeeg.
My view is Taniela Tupou is currently accounting for 1M a year of the RA budget, why not let him go to Japan or the premiership where they can foot the bill, and bring him in for test rugby. There will absolutely be a lag in talent coming through, but then comes the opportunity to uncover the next Pone, while also providing a more even distribution of wealth across the rebels roster.
If uncle Nick signs Jorgo, they’ll no doubt paint it as a huge coup. However, he’s played half a season of super, with the rest being injured, injured at the WC and is now injured again. With Kellaway on the way to Daveyville, I’d let him go rather than empty the coffers.
The code war narrative is being manufactured and driven by the media and the suits. It should be fluid, where players can come and go while testing themselves in either arena.
RA reeling and facing a mass exodus of biggest stars - there are three key reasons why they're in peril
Agree that’s the risk, id say the key difference is we do have a genuine domestic comp. Where as Samoan or Tongan players are 100% playing overseas. Aus players OS contracts should be built around test periods, problem at the moment is our selection policy is ambiguous at best. Clermont can sign a Nobby Newsome and be reasonably confident they won’t have to give him up because he hasn’t played test rugby. However, if open selection was adopted, all clubs signing Aus players to new contracts would have to consider this as a risk.
My underlying point is the current situation isn’t working, players are leaving anyway. If we don’t make a change we’ll be left with super clubs that each have 1 player on 1M a year surrounded by Shute shield players, and wondering why we aren’t winning.
