As the decade comes to a close, I'm looking back on the last decade in Australian and world sport. From the highs and lows…
The Anglo-Australian sporting rivalry has once again dominated the sporting narrative in 2019. Our Wallabies fell to England in the Rugby World Cup quarter-final,…
On Thursday night, the Socceroos made light work of Nepal in their World Cup qualifier, prevailing 5-0 courtesy of a Jamie Maclaren hat trick…
As the Wallabies' World Cup campaign heats up in Japan, Michael Cheika, Michael Hooper and the rest of the team are quite rightly focused…
Thanks! I just knew I had to include the Iran-Iraq game as well because of the amazing storyline and drama it produced.
Australian sporting moments of the decade: 2015 AFC Asian Cup
Thanks Mark! The final was truly a special night for football fans in Australia, especially those lucky enough to be there at ANZ Stadium

Thanks Beetle!
The issue with basketball is England simply don’t play it enough. They’re ranked 41st in the world and rarely qualify for major tournaments.
An ODI is an interesting idea, and having it on Thursday could extend the weekend well.

8 state of origins in a row** but I see your point, it would be hard to find calendar space
The next step in the Australia-England sporting rivalry
What exactly does Tony Abbott have to do with it?
The next step in the Australia-England sporting rivalry
I think it would be important for it not to be just one off matches. The men’s T20 could serve as part of a three-game series, the women’s as part of the Ashes. One off rugby tests are never seen as “friendly” matches, so I don’t think that would be a concern, while the womens football could be a part of a “Tournament of Nations” which we have hosted previously. The rugby league could be part of a three match series which the international board and the NRL are trying to make happen in the next few years. But perhaps a NZ tournament would be simpler.

With the Kiwis you could certainly add basketball, however the soccer would definitely suffer. We could play them, but it wouldn’t be as high a drawing game, maybe better to then play it at SFS or BankWest.
I do like the addition of the basketball though.
The next step in the Australia-England sporting rivalry
Fantastic! I didn’t consider the basketball and other sports because England don’t really play them, but tennis could definitely work!
The next step in the Australia-England sporting rivalry
Unfortunately given the off seasons of the different sports, october would be the best chance for all the sports, and I can’t see Manchester United or Liverpool coming then. I like the idea, but there are international breaks in football all the time that this could work around
The next step in the Australia-England sporting rivalry
In 2003, England played the Socceroos with their A team, but that game was in London. It would definitely happen in an international window and would be more than just a “practice match”
The next step in the Australia-England sporting rivalry
We’ve played them a few times before
The next step in the Australia-England sporting rivalry
Well we had a clash in the Rugby World Cup, a whole ashes series and two cricket World Cup matches.
The next step in the Australia-England sporting rivalry
Yeah the soccer would probably be the toughest to make happen
The next step in the Australia-England sporting rivalry
Yeah look that’s probably right. I wanted a name which had to do with Australia and England, and the Rugby trophy is already the Cook Cup.
It’s pretty much a fantasy idea, I realise it will probably never get off the ground.

North and South America together would be a great idea!
The Socceroos need an Asian Nations League
With the exception of South America and Oceania. South America only have 10 nations and they all play each other at home and away in World Cup qualifying anyway, so it would be somewhat unnecessary, Oceania is too small and underdeveloped
The Socceroos need an Asian Nations League
Yeah, I remember when we won the Asian Cup some of the Middle Eastern nations kicked up a fuss about us being in AFC
The Socceroos need an Asian Nations League
Definitely! Especially since most of our players play in Europe for their clubs. Of course, if we move to Europe every nation would want to move to Europe to compete with high quality opponents there (except maybe the South American nations)
The Socceroos need an Asian Nations League
I guess it could work in the same way as the European Nations League- each country plays 1-2 games in each international break
The Socceroos need an Asian Nations League
At the moment, Suva is only an hour different in time zone than Sydney, so I can’t see it being too much of a huge issue
Australia should look to the Pacific for their 2027 Rugby World Cup bid
I like less teams qualifying but then the tournament becomes more like the FIFA World Cup where almost all internationals are centred on qualifying for the World Cup. Test Rugby featuring European nations versus the Southern Hemisphere sides for nothing but pride and bragging rights are still hugely popular and important to world rugby
Australia should look to the Pacific for their 2027 Rugby World Cup bid
Hopefully not more games as you suggest. Moving to 24 teams would be a huge mistake from World Rugby.
South Africa has some dangers attached, which is why World Rugby have been reluctant to award it to them. Johannesburg has very high crime numbers.
Australia should look to the Pacific for their 2027 Rugby World Cup bid
I’m not an economist, I get what you’re saying about the cost but I’d love it if they were able to make it happen

Thanks!
Yeah you’re kinda right, it’s like how 1999 wasn’t really the end of the millennium but it was still celebrated then
