When I am not watching and betting on two flies crawling up the wall I am spending my spare time as a lawyer. I can provide a unique insight into sport and the law.

The time has really come for tougher penalties across the board, with extra fines, weighting if it is a group race.

The punishment dished out to Oliver, Con K and Waterhouse in the last year is truly laughable.

Racing’s left to rot after guilty Waterhouse cops just $5500 fine

A very interesting appointment. Great to see the Bulldogs appointing the best in business regardless of sex etc.

Raelene Castle joins Bulldogs as NRL's first female CEO

Agree with the various sentiments but as in my most sports, new players or horses on the scene will come up and take their place.

Except the great Black Caviar.

That is why she is the best of the best. There will never be another one like her.

Big hole left but no gamble taken as All Too Hard is retired

I sympathise regarding your family member. But if a person is a gambling addict betting on the football do we disregard the good people in rugby league?

NRL needs to distance itself from horse racing

I agree with you both.

For some reason the media, the game and the public want footballers to be robots. We are constantly seeing attacks on their rights to do anything other than run around on a rugby league field.

This morning I have read this article saying footballers shouldn’t have anything to do with racing and another article saying that Josh Dugan’s contract could contain anti-social media provisions.

What next? Rules about where they can go to the toilet?

I fail to see how the NRL can enforce any “line” in the sand with respect to Singo etc.

Or is the writer asking the NRL to say “Singo we don’t want your money anymore because you own racehorses?”.

As you say Allanthus, I can understand the frustration but the retaliation here has been misfired!

Further, the article also insinuates some notion that horse racing is some evil. Like most industries their is the good, the bad and the ugly in the horse racing industry.

Let’s not tarnish both codes all because of a classic case of chinese whispers gone wrong.

NRL needs to distance itself from horse racing

No doubt your argument has legs but unfortunately all of the other factors, such as money, television rights etc are going to be considered above and beyond the development of cricketers.

Cricket absolutely needs all three formats

With all due respect to the writer, I think you underestimate the importance and power of a culture.

When a club finds a winning culture, it has the ability to maintain that culture for some time. Decisions on personnel will effect the culture, but they generally will be successful for as long as they can maintain it.

The Storm can win without Bellamy

Mason is Wayne’s flavour of the month because he tried hard in a badly beaten team last year.

This selection, amongst others, makes a mockery of the Áll Stars’ concept.

I also don’t expect to see him at Origin.

Johnno- Dare you to ask Gallen what he thinks of Pappali.

All Stars bolter Mason NSW-bound?

I think it is all a bit too easy to blame a small market place.

Although I agree with the proposition that Australia ultimately cannot sustain at a serious level so many sports, one needs to look at other factors when judging the V8 super cars deal, such as the steady decrease in advertising revenue on FTA, as well as the diminishing loss of disposable income amongst Australians.

Australian sporting pie can’t sustain itself

The new rules with the referees is silly and amatuerish at best.

It is akin to a Magistrate letting someone off but then launching an appeal themselves because there not sure.

I totally agree Luke that the refs will be on a hiding to nothing.

ARLC signs off with a bang for 2012 with host of rule improvements

I think people are being a bit tough on the Broncos.

They looked to me like a team that looked jaded towards the end. With a bit more depth and experience, they should be much better this year.

Brisbane Broncos supremacy may finally be over

This article raises an important issue in sport at the moment: player burnout.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is going to be a key legal issue going forward.

Administrator’s feel the need to generate as much income for the game but at what cost? On the other hand, greater income generally means more income for the players.

It is a fine balancing act and it will be interesting to see how various codes deal with this issue.

Wallabies are overplayed and McCaw is irreplaceable

Thanks for your comment Oikee.

Yes you are right there is a duty of care owed by sporting administrators to participants but as I said above the idea of the reforms was that people should also be responsible for their own actions.

For example, rugby league is an inherently dangerous sport and one knows that they have a high chance of having a serious injury every time they play.

For this reason, players don’t sue every time they have a broken leg in a tackle.

As for your example about Court- you should if you have time read the case and in particular the references to evidence of Warren Ryan and Marcus Bai.

It is fair to say that many in rugby league would admit that there is an intention in every tackle to hurt someone. Not in a catastrophic way, but in a way to at least wear them down.

Shoulder charging with the full force of the law

There is no doubting it has been a hard road for the Sharks and its fans. After all they have to live with the fact that they are yet to win a premiership.

However, the victim mentality after the recent development must end.

For all of the problems off the field, the Sharks have been quite successful on it without winning that elusive premiership in recent years save for the lean years in and around Ricky Stuart’s demise.

As for the Eels, they are reminding me alot of Souths years ago. Desperate to buy whatever good thing is going over and above market price.

The decision to throw wads of cash at Chris Sandow and William Hopoate are now coming to bite them in the backside.

Patience is a virtue in rugby league

I agree Spiro.

As mainly a passive observer it is great to be able to come to a site with personal and forthright commentary and opinion, often from those in the thick of the action.

As someone who has grown up in the South Sydney culture and is all too aware of the issues that Peter raises, I dare say he knew what was coming from the people that have sniped him from day one.

I won’t engage in those debates further except to say that I hope that people don’t lose sight of why they support Souths and follow football.

HOLMES A COURT: Why Russell was so good for Souths

Are you really suggesting that Russel did not donate any money to any fundraisers?

I am not going to argue with you because you anti-establishment brigade will always challenge the clubs leaders whether they be GP, RC, PHaC or anyone else.

If one looks at the record of the club on and off the field, I doubt anyone can honestly put their hand on their heart and say that they have done a bad job.

Leaders on and off the field. Enough said without getting into semantics about figures.

As suggested, those who feel they can do a better job should get in touch with Crowe and buy his share.

HOLMES A COURT: Why Russell was so good for Souths

It has been a remarkable turn around for the Club and all Souths fans should be proud and happy about what the club has achieved in the past few years.

As one comment shows here, any club, least of all a club with a history as rich as Souths, is always going to have its fair share of trouble makers and internet heroes.

I am still waiting for one of Godfrey’s mates above to come out and offer to do a better job. Maybe he and his buddies can buy Russell’s share?

Either way all Souths fans should enjoy the success the club is currently doing and applaud Rusty for his work.

HOLMES A COURT: Why Russell was so good for Souths

You are talking about sports that have models and competitions which make them almost self-funding.

I think it is important that Olympic sports continue to be funded for the reasons listed above.

No Olympic gold for Australia again on Day 5 in London

With the Aussie gold medal drought the debate will once again turn to funding in Sport.

Whereas before it was ‘cool’ to get behind sport in this country and support it as it being the most important thing of our national identity, it has now been cool to hate sport and to loathe any government funding to it.

I’ll take another angle. Each day we hear of the obesity problems plaguing this nation particularly about youth. Would not success in the Olympics help encourage more and more people to take up sport and to lead an active life style?

Food for thought.

No Olympic gold for Australia again on Day 5 in London

It is true and clubs must seriously start to consider balancing their team with players not good enough for Origin. The best value players going forward will be British and Kiwi players.

It's official: the NRL goes mental

John Sutton has always been a good first grade but for some reason people expect much more from him. I think that criticism of him as lazy and inconsistent has been very unfair.

He has always played his best football when given a structured game plan. When Jason Taylor was Souths coach Sutton was firing and leading the league in try assist. With the emergence of Sandow and the coaching of Lang, his stats, and form went out the window.

Maguire has him playing a very simple game plan- run first think second. He is playing straight and off his hip. It doesn’t hurt having options like GI, Taylor and Burgess running of you either!

It's official: the NRL goes mental

Great article. As a Souths fan since I was born it is certainly the most excitement I have had about my team. Funnily enough though there is still a sense of awkward pessimism amongst souths fans. We are still waiting for the bubble to burst. I though think this team may be the real deal.

Are the Rabbitohs on the brink of glory?
