It won’t fix the issue but following the AFL model of having local teams on FTA regardless of when they play would help.
ACT/Riverina would always see the Raiders live
Same for Victoria for the Storm, the Hunter region for Knights and Nth QLD for the Cowboys. Heck, even giving Wollongong viewers St George games live.
For those matches, channel 9 just takes the foxtel feed which is what happens for non Victorian teams in the AFL
The Broncos get the best TV timeslots, and here's why they deserve them
Can’t reply for all leagues but in the ACT, there is a youth girls comp (Under 15s). After that they go to women’s.
We need more seats! Four talking points from AFL Women's Round 1
In terms of media coverage, the AFL Women’s completely overshadowed all of them with only the Rugby 7s getting close (I’m in Canberra).
You missed the Davis Cup in your list (which was also overshadowed by the AFLW)

You could make the 9s worth something by offering a bonus 4 competition points to the winner and 2 competition points to the runner up.
Radical idea but all of a sudden it’d mean something to the clubs participating

Great article.
I wrote a similar one a few years back although nowhere near as eloquent as you.

BBL and the A-League: Why can't we be friends?
The Canberra Times mentioned Fremantle as an expansion possibility in an article today
McGuire warns not to rush BBL expansion
I like this line of thinking. The problem is timing though. As soon as you expand outside school holidays, crowds will drop significantly
McGuire warns not to rush BBL expansion
As others pointed out, Gold Coast has a huge summer population with people looking for family friendly entertainment. Additionally, the A-League, AFL and NRL are competitions that go over a 6 month period. The Big Bash would be just 4 games per year (plus finals when they make it) so crowds won’t be an issue especially as they are all in school holidays as well.
I notice that the Canberra Times mentioned Fremantle and Geelong as possible expansion possibilities in an article today.
McGuire warns not to rush BBL expansion
Best to keep the team numbers even. Makes scheduling easier.
So add in Canberra plus another (Gold Coast)
I would say Darwin but given it’s held in the wet season, the probability of games being washed out drastically increases.
McGuire warns not to rush BBL expansion
If you look really simply at the top 8, you get this pattern.
In 2012, there were 3 teams in the 8 that weren’t there in 2011 (Adelaide, Freo, North came in whilst Carlton, Essendon and St Kilda dropped out
In 2013 Essendon, Port, Richmond came in whilst Adelaide, North and West Coast dropped out. (If you disqualify Essendon due to the ASADA thing, Carlton still come into the 8 as they weren’t there in 2012)
In 2014, the only change to the 8 was North Melbourne coming in for Collingwood
In 2015, Adelaide, West Coast and the Dogs came in for Essendon, Geelong and Port
In 2016, Geelong and GWS came in whilst Fremantle and Richmond dropped out.
Your predictions have North and Sydney dropping out for Melbourne and St Kilda. Historically, it is more common to have 3 changes meaning it is likely to have 1 more change. I’d probably add that West Coast would drop out with Collingwood or Port Adelaide sneaking into the 8.
I also wonder if the Bulldogs will have a premiership hangover like Hawthorn in 09
My take on the AFL ladder for 2017

Top 15 sports stories of 2016
Two I’d like to add: Maria Sharapova being banned for the meldonium thing was pretty big and Bangladesh winning a test match against England. Previously, Banglesh’s only wins in test matches had been against Zimbabwe and West Indies.
I’m not saying either of these are top 15 but they were both huge news.
And another that people might easily forget was the mens 1500 final. I’m probably a bit biased as I was watching it with a group of Italians but watching them finish 1st and 3rd when they’d never won that event before was amazing.

If Bangladesh can win this, it’ll be huge. You can sense the crowd starting to be a part of this, cheering every run.

I am wondering if the AFL is guilty of tokenism right now. There are so many themed rounds for so many different issues that I think people don’t care anymore. And the AFL wants the good press and having a match/round dedicated to a particular issue is the easiest way to achieve a pat on the back from various community organisations. It probably keeps them on good terms with the governments/TV networks for funding & ad revenue.
That being said, I don’t really have an issue with any themed match or themed round. I just hope these aren’t organised by corporate to tick a box somewhere
Sexual diversity and pride to be celebrated this Saturday night
It’s actually not incorrect.
A 2003 survey by Australia/New Zealand journal public health found 1.6% of Australian males identify themselves as homosexual (this does not include bisexuals).
Based on the maths, if you picked out 43 people at random from the population, there is a 50/50 chance at least one of them would be gay.
R n R estimates that he played with 300-400 people over the years. The chances of them all being heterosexual are 0.7%. So it is theoretically possible he never shared a changeroom with a gay person but incredibly unlikely

Games in Canberra would get a boost when WSW and Sydney FC play there. Sydney is only 3 hours drive away. Melbourne is only an 8 hour drive or 1 hour flight away as well.

Alternate who chooses. If a team wants to bowl first and it is their turn to choose, they should be allowed to do so
McCullum has all but raised the white flag
It’s almost like the FFA are banking on the Phoenix packing up and leavin freeing them up for a third Sydney team which can also play out of Wollongong.
I’d still like to see the A-League come to Canberra but it’s been made clear that we are a low priority.
Wellington Phoenix's future unclear after FFA reject 10-year A-League extension
I still don’t get the point of this round (or the corresponding round in the AFL). I don’t the concept of themed rounds in general other than the tokenistic gesture so the footy codes can just say “hey look at us. We are progressive”
The author says that the round is here to celebrate women like Yvonne Sampson, Catharine Lumby, Helen Wood-Grant, Marina Go, Kezie Apps, Stephanie Crockford, Raelene Castle and Kasey Badger. But what does celebrate actually mean? Briefly mentioned by a few commentators during quiet spells in the game? Give them a parade around the ground before kickoff on Friday night?
I get that the round may highlight some of the things these women have done. And that in itself is a good thing. But I don’t believe we need a round for this. Give these women a bit of media training and have them sell their message to the media to have them in the news regularly throughout the season.
These themed rounds are well intentioned but I feel miss the mark. I feel it would be a better strategy to embed women like the ones listed above throughout the entire season. Have them visible regularly at games, in the paper, on the NRL website and on the 6pm news. I barely hear anything about these people except for during women’s round every year. And that is pretty much what tokenism is.
As a side note, if the NRL is serious about a women’s competition, they need to begin promotion now. Hold exhibition matches like the ones the AFL used to. Hold a competition between different regions. As an example, an 8 team competition: Sydney, Western Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle, Brisbane, Canberra, Central QLD and Nth QLD. The NRL funds the competition and broadcasts it. This would allow people to begin following the women’s game andd familiarise themselves with some players which eventually build up hype towards a national competition when it happens in the not to distant future.
