A Queenslander, ex British Columbian who has been passionate about Aussie rules before the bears made it to Brisbane. “Is the juice worth the squeeze”!

Nah,
Don Freo would have said 7 seasons, his maths are better.

Freo tie down Darcy to long term extension, Membrey returns to Saints 'four kilos lighter'

A very abrupt ending to Melbourne’s season .
Two things : it appears that teams “worked out” Melbourne and they were unable to respond. Be interesting to see if they get another easy early season draw against minnows or the AFLW actually do a more balanced draw. Will they change style / personnel or fade ? Interesting dilemma …
Secondly : (iIt is both Lions men’s & women’s fault for poor losses during season but …) You can see from this season alone why McClelland trophy is a reward for ??? Being a good team during home & away ONLY. Both teams crashed out in straight sets of finals where as the runner up , Lions appear to be clearly the best finals club . Women’s team should be confident Saturday but not arrogant.

Demon deja vu! Melbourne knocked out of finals in straight sets AGAIN as Cats survive insane AFLW fightback

Reasonable assessment but the whole tightening / growing / due thing smacks of hope rather than logic. Lions by 6 + goals .

Why every team will win their AFL preliminary final... and why they'll lose

After Kingsley , McRae , Nicks (jury still out on Longmuir) last few multi club assistants doing well. He seems next strategy coach to unleash upon game.

'Want them thinking they can make the top four': New Richmond coach Yze urges Tigers to dare to dream

Doran , key players are mainly right. J Fletcher is a surprise inclusion over say L. Neale? And match ups of Cripps were not mentioned and Newman got cleaned up by Cameron & Bailey in last two games (14 goals) .
I appreciate it is a bit of a puff piece for finals but IGchat or whatever is breathing down your neck – it does the research automatically. Surely if you are going to write a prelim piece, go the extra yards , you would hope the players will.
Writers rating for match : 5 medium possessions , beaten by opponent on day , no score involvements. Need to do better to hold his spot …..

Crucial cogs of the AFL Preliminary Finals: The players who need to be the difference makers

I had not heard that ?? Mmm well – looks like Saints by passed that .

Ruthless clash of opposites that sparked Ratten sacking, who is next man in: Burning questions after brutal move

The AFL brought in two rules re coaches sacking over the last 4 years. Firstly ( before Covid) they introduced that whatever was left on a sacked coach’s contract was then taken off their soft cap the next year. That was when only Bolton got sacked and he had 6 months to go ……Then after massive complaints last year they changed it to that clubs could only pay out 6 months to coaches. This year, FOUR coaches gone. Go figure ……

Ruthless clash of opposites that sparked Ratten sacking, who is next man in: Burning questions after brutal move

It is only “cruel irony” if you have been used to attending Grand Finals as a birthright for over 100 years. ANOTHER way to look at it is the competition, albeit heavily biased to Victorian clubs, is mature and exciting and any team can make the last hurdle. The fact that the game is truly THE national sport should be more the source of joy rather than – oh an outsider has won it again .

The love of the game and it’s diversity should be the paramount theme but feel free to allow the cry of “Vic Bias” to keep getting air time and credence.

2022 AFL preliminary finals preview: Can the Cats and Pies keep Victoria's flag hopes alive?

This did NOT age well

And then there were six: Who wins the flag from here?

This ‘prediction piece’ got old real quick !
Wouldn’t it be a hoot with the Lions being chosen as least likely 4 weeks in a row and having a Craic at “the big dance”?

I was one of the many members and fans that based on results and performance had lost faith. But I now have faith. Not that we will win but that we CAN win. And it may be more unlikely but as they say in poker ‘ a chip and a chair” .

Brisbane’s catch cry is ALL IN – some nice symbiosis there. CARN LIONS

And then there were six: Who wins the flag from here?

I think choosing club captain’s should either be choosing the obvious or choosing a good fit until the obvious become ready.
This article displays to me that the Lions are in the second category. No option seems obvious and currently no one option seems convincingly a good fit. I think Neale may thrive on captaincy and that may be one of his aspirations. I think Tim is fair is his assessment about ambassador / grass roots etc etc but, if there is no obvious, a good fit means close enough.
Lachie would be a great ambassador and not being a Qlder in AFL senior side means you are almost always in the majority.
The other option which again is not ideal but may be best fit is co captains. I think Harris and Lachie would be a good partnership. They communicate regularly about team defence and would be well respected as a duo. You have the grass roots and the elite , all in a bundle. They are both All Australian members.

My choice of the obvious captain in the future is not Hugh or Jarrod (who I greatly respect and think could do it) but an emerging star who could shine brightest of all. If Cam Rainer continues to blossom as a player and a man amongst men perhaps we may have found our new Lion King ( let the music rise in the background as the baboon cackles). You heard it hear first folks. CARN Lions !

The favourites to replace Zorko as Brisbane captain

Have you been watching the games Gazza? Between Marcus , Harris and recently Keidean Coleman, we have three great intercepting Mark’s in our back 7.
Kiddy Coleman’s rise in this area really makes a difference from the Starcevich /Answerth small defender and his graceful kicking is getting more pinpoint and consistent.
The next 9 weeks will be a great test for the side and a good reflection of our position on the comp.

Mid-season review: Brisbane Lions

I am right 3 of 4. Tigers look tired & banged up .

AFL Oracle: Can last year's finals also-rans take the next step in 2022?

True dat Don .

AFL Oracle: Can last year's finals also-rans take the next step in 2022?

I can see why as a Giants supporter, you would have a good sense of humour. Your team has been wretchedly unlucky with injury, and Israel Folau. ????I do not think Jesse Hogan will kick 50 goals, especially many in early games, but if he does ………….mmmm

A perfectly reasonable and sensible prediction of the 2022 AFL season

Read my “Queenslander” retort for some AFLW

AFL Oracle: Can last year's finals also-rans take the next step in 2022?

GWS & Port drop

Tigerss & Carlton rise.

AFL Oracle: Can last year's finals also-rans take the next step in 2022?

Mate, REALLY! You are saying Queenslanders are the lairs of the pack. The high on flashy, low on substance players. Now we could go into the age old born vs raised ….. which is even more accentuated in AFL due to sheer weight of numbers.
Lets go with born and learned footy in Qld. Jason Dunstall, Harris Andrews, Marcus Ashcroft, Dayne Beams, Mal Michael, Nick Riewoldt, Ally Andersen, Emily Bates, Kate Lutkins and Katie Brennan.
Born elsewhere learned / played in Qld. Michael Voss, Simon Black, Nigel Lappin, Roger Merrett, Brad Hardie, Lachie Neale, Daniel Rich, Jonathon Brown, Alistair Lynch, Brad & Chris Scott, Shaun Hart, Orla O’Dwyer.
Some pretty fair players there that are universally respected and have the awards and accolades to follow.
FFS, Jason Dunstall is the Chairman of the board against flashy, lairy footy behaviour. He was a supreme champion of hard work, technique and team work. He ridicules people on the major national show with his own segment on the showy stuff.
What a ridiculous, poorly thought, casually flung statement you made without any evidence or even pre existing scenario.
If you dare to throw up a Akermanis or a Dakota Davison, a Charlie Cameron or even a Dayne Zorko, I will give you of yeah, they like the entertaining. But those 4 are All Australians and have performed on the big stage when the stuff gets tough, they kept going. If they have not won a premiership yet, it was not their fault.
I will not ask which state you pledge allegiance to, I do not want to embarrass your kin. I lived in North America for almost a decade and over there, it is state(or Provence)first. I do not know why the hatred but you need to focus on the issues mate, like why your team is doing so poorly.
Feel free to retort but unless you have twice the names with a more articulate and better thought out response ….. let’s just all be aussies huh? …… and pay out on the kiwis!

AFL Oracle: Can last year's finals also-rans take the next step in 2022?

Donal,

nice light article. CARN Lions.

My take on this exercise is 3 things:-
-rose coloured glasses
– you cannot win it in April but you can lose it
– depth of style

Which means 1) most people put their team slightly higher through desire
2) if there are obvious early season personnel problems, that will usually carry through the season
3) if the teams style relies too heavily on too few, high risk

Top 4 : Demons / Dogs/ Lions / Tigers

5 to 7 : Cats / Swans/ Power

8 to 12 : Bombers / Dockers / Blues / Saints / Giants

13 to 18 : Hawks/ Eagles / Crows / Suns/ Kangaroos / Magpies

Teams that have lost 1 or more of their most important players to style for early part of ‘22 :
Giants, Power, Eagles(2+), Suns(2), Blues.

Poor depth : below 7
Good consistency : above 8 except Tigers ‘21,
below 7 only Bombers and Giants.

Sliders : Power & Eagles

Risers: Dockers & / or Blues

Very tough to predict this Covid Cup.

I think the premier will come from top 4, I do not think 5 to 7 have “correct” depth. I think bottom 11 have “issues”.

How will the 2022 AFL ladder end up?

Harsh or Harbrow – not flakey.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'If Gold Coast were a factory, all they'd produce is sadness'

I do not see GWS being a lock (or Freo) for top 6 – that is crazy talk. AND having Cats, Swans AND Lions dropping out of top 6 – really ??? There is not much more the Lions can do to display confidence in their consistency and top 4 credentials. Cats whiskers are waning but out of 8? And Swans have equal best youngsters in league with 1 or 7 old stagers to help them through, especially if they play at home this season.
St Kilda, Freo, Bombers, GWS, Weat Coast are not in same conversation. They might? make 8 but different Tier.
Port are a watch closely and Tigers should be up in 4 again.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'If Gold Coast were a factory, all they'd produce is sadness'

Except for making 8 Dom, I agree with everything you said. If they finish with 10 or 11 wins that is excellent season. I do not see them getting 12 or 13 though.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'If Gold Coast were a factory, all they'd produce is sadness'

AFL interest in SEQ, especially in women & children, is fastest growing new fan base in Australia for any sport. Your statements about Queenslanders not following AFL is historically correct but behind trend. If Gold Coast can have a reasonable season and retain almost all young stars, fans will continue to build.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'If Gold Coast were a factory, all they'd produce is sadness'

Carlton have paid big money for “at very best” mid tier players who at times are not in best 22. That is not a recipe for sustained success.

AFL 2022 Radar: 'If Gold Coast were a factory, all they'd produce is sadness'

Based upon your sunny, feel good disposition, you probably are a huge supporter of AFLW, pride and indigenous round.
The suns are not going anywhere. Do you have anything within the universe of constructive to say ?
