I think those are probably the most realistic scenarios, Davo. The dream outcome for North would be something like 2 and North’s 2021 Round 2 for 4 and Hawks’ 2021 Round 1, but I think that’s more than the Hawks would be willing to give up.

I think if Essendon do bid on Rioli it would be with what is currently their pick 44, or a selection they trade in. He is considered a chance to get through to the rookie draft so pick 8 would be very early.
Re those unknown jewels – I think next year’s mid-season draft could be a bumper crop, to put it simply. Wouldn’t mind if North is stinking it up and has pick 1 at that time of year…

If the Eagles have a future pick they want to get up I’m sure they could get back in, as there are a few clubs reportedly keen to trade earlyish picks out for future selections. It depends more on what price would be expected and whether the Eagles want to pay it.

The way I’ve worded it is probably a bit confusing, sorry. As Tom has said – the Pies could match McInnes/Daicos bids without using a first-rounder, so the ideal scenario is to use all three first-rounders on open pool players and then match bids for that pair with later picks. They will get those two first-round players regardless so only getting one more with those three picks, while a solid result on the whole, isn’t the best they could do.

I do think Martin could be a good acquisition, at the same time, he’s a million years old. Even if he does come on in a big way it’s only 1-2 years before you need to replace him again.

Look they might have added a bit of nuance. They’re also my pet peeve when it comes to things like this. Like people who rate something out of 10 and say “5.5!”. Why rate it out of 10 if you don’t want to just use the numbers between 1 and 10?
That rant out of the way: I stand by my concerns re Treloar. The Dogs did well but I have doubts enough that I’m not confident giving them an A. May they prove me very wrong.

I can understand Montagna’s concerns – a lot of those draft picks haven’t really come on yet and it’s possibly a little sceptical whether the Blues have really built a solid enough foundation of youth just yet to move on to the ‘mature recruits’ stage. But I think particularly in this year’s draft, it’s pretty reasonable of the Blues to be fed up with unpredictable draft picks and instead go bang bang on some primo mature talent. Hopefully it works out (and hopefully Curnow is back in a big way).

Dees definitely could be deserving of an A. I’m not sold on the pick swap moves they made (though as said I admire their boldness with it) but in terms of players in/players out, it’s very good business.

I think the Dogs got Adam Treloar at great value but I also think that, before trade period, no one would’ve said they need an Adam Treloar type. They were definitely borderline on getting an A and that’s the way most others have gone but I’m just not totally convinced. Speaking as a fan of a club that has tried to play inside midfielders in every position as a strategy for some time now, I can tell you that the midfield minutes question is definitely a genuine concern.

They got value with the players they brought in, much as they got value on Tom Scully and Jono Patton, neither of whom are doing anything to help their dire overall list position. I think the moves they made were executed well, but not the direction they needed to go in, hence the D.

Or…
“Geelong trade for Jeremy Cameron without giving up a top-10 pick.”
The latter is just as true and sounds pretty good!

Agree – and I suppose if you’re going to bid, you may as well bid with the pick that will cost your opposition the most. That said, again to make another nuffie take, I don’t think the Bombers will bid too heavily just so they can keep using the “three top ten picks” line too.

Reasonable points. It doesn’t look like they want to use their second-rounder so I’m sure they’ll look to trade it on, but what they can get for it that’s actually valuable is hard to say.

Like everything else this year: maybe! Given they’re also brining in Jackson Hately at the pre-season draft I’m not sure it’s the best fit for them, but they may feel differently. He does have huge potential if he lands at the right club.
