I’m not going to pretend to be a huge basketball fan so I expect to get slaughtered here for this comment, BUT I am a semi keen casual observer who is probably in the market that the NBL would (or should) be trying to get to watch more regularly.
I’d have one match on a Tuesday and Wednesday night respectively on a weekly basis, then the rest as normal on weekends (although probably not Friday night, Sunday night would be crucial IMO). Try to make those two Tuesday and Wednesday night matches as marquee as possible, even start of with play on only one of the nights until the concept gains momentum. I’d also propose giving it an earlier start, say 6-6:30 to attract families (especially if played during summer, want to get a start on BBL). 7 o’clock during winter would probably do though. Although crowds may drop this might be worth it for the TV audience.
I would ademand that the Tuesday and/or Wednesday match be on a free to air major station (7,9,10), even if it means accepting a lower price on the overall rights. What you lose in rights money you’re going to gain from advertising which that network will do for its own purposes, as I’m sure they will at least try to make the best of that situation. Then you could have the rest of the games on a channel such as One HD live or even on Foxtel, sometimes giving fans less is actually more as it leaves them hungrier (as long as you’re giving them enough to keep them interested).
I’d also demand Sunday night games be shown live on a major channel if the concept starts working. As you might notice I’m trying to pick times not generally utilized by other major codes on FTA.
As for whether to start the league from scratch or not I won’t pretend to know enough to say whether that’s a good idea or not, but I will say that creating a new league can generate a lot of interest.
Anyway there’s a casual observers perspective, I’m sure there are some major flaws but I’m bored on a Wednesday night worth a crack!
The NBL only has one problem, but it's a doozy
Agreed. Geelongs midfield is almost entirely u23, why they may not reach the heights of the Geelong team before them (one of the great teams of all the time) I still believe this team should push for a premiership in 2-3 years, if not sooner
The Cats' magnificent era seems to be over
Wouldn’t say their first 3 quarters against Freo or game against North was emphatic football?
The 2014 Geelong Cats: A riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma
Not a bad article, but can’t blame the panel for awkwardly laughing as they were. Especially when the majority are in their very early years of hosting. Good thing is they won’t make that mistake again
Sidenote Damian Barrett doesn’t write for the Herald Sun, but reports for AFL.com.au. In fact there have often been stoushes between damo and Mark Robinson/Jon Ralph on twitter.
Go home BT, and take the boys club language with you
Great debate on here, just wanted to clarify a couple of things as some people seem to have missed the point
The point of my argument is the fact the MRP let him off based on the force of his contact. I’m not saying whether a headbutt should/shouldn’t be treated more harshly than an elbow or if it hit Picket in the head. I’m simply saying that it appeared Ablett’s elbow was much more forceful than Johnson head tilt. Which if it was why wasn’t Johnson let off due to ‘force not warranting a report’? Johnsons bad record or Abletts exemplary one only comes into it once the report has been made, which for Ablett it wasn’t.
Double standards from the MRP as Ablett cleared
Nothing wrong with channel 9’s cricket.
Channel 9 is the best footy station, combined with the recruitment of commentators like Cometti they would be awesome
Who deserves to broadcast the AFL?
Was just basically what I thought there chances are, they will not add up
Who deserves Good Friday footy?
Short on facts
Ling tagged whenever there was a midfielder good enough to warrant his attention
Stratton occasionally tags today for Hawthorn
Guthrie tags for Geelong
Cornes tags for Port Adelaide
Are taggers necessary in the AFL?
If anything I’d say Geelong is more likely to be in a position to tilt for a flag in 3 years time than next year

MCG is the nations premier venue and home of football. No debate, unless a major redevelopment is taking place it should host the Grand Final

Swans to meet Cats in the Grand Final
Thanks Coops, love rowing and love reporting on it! I know James Chapman (former Men’s 4 member) used to write a diary for The Roar, wish he was got back to do some reporting also.
Could not agree more, so frustrating as a current rower when somebody comes up to me at the gym and says “you’re doing it wrong” and then proceeds to show me the typical gym user technique. Down Geelong way I know Corio Bay Rowing Club has free come and try days, I think the sport’s unnecessary love affair with early mornings does it far more harm than good as well.
Rowing is absolutely THE team sport, no question. One person slightly out of time, rushing forward, cox not steering straight or even someone slightly dropping power for just a few strokes has been the difference between winning and losing in my experience!
Men's four in Rio shapes as one of rowing history's best
Confirmed that Simonds will host a final next week, glad the AFL read my article 😉
Geelong deserve a final at Simonds Stadium
Brad Ottens won flags without getting his knees dirty?? Highly debatable, as he was renowned for his 2nd efforts at the contest and would quite often end up trying to be the one at the bottom of a pack.
I disagree with two of your other statements as well, Ryder has been the number one ruck recently but probably not in the majority of matches this year. Bellchambers was certainly number one for most of the first half of the year. Trent West is also not being picked because of form, not because Geelong prefer the way Blicavs play.
The game has changed for ruckmen
The amount of midfielders the AA selectors put on the bench/out of position always frustrates me. Should be no more than 2 in my opinion.
That said, one of Selwood/Hannebery has to go. I’d give the edge to Selwood given I’d probably start him on the ground and make him skipper.
Given that you already have Goddard to play defense on the interchange, I’d give that extra bench spot too one of Stevie J, Stokes or Mayne. As already said Mcpharlin won’t get in, move Thompson to FB and play one of Glass/Gibson/Talia there.
50/50 on the debate between Cloke and Kennedy as well, will probably purely come down to the one that ends up with the most goals.
Who will make the 2013 All Australian team?
Mcpharlin a walk up start in round 11, but correct missed too much footy should not and will not get in
Who will make the 2013 All Australian team?
Do a Chris Rogers and select David Hussey for the return series!
Solution to Aussie's first-drop dilemma
+3, disappointing when articles based on nothing but rumor get published on The Roar
10 reasons the outlook's bleak for Aussie cricket
Clarke and Symonds where best mates until about 2007/08. We know that Clarke was unhappy with Symonds behavior and that caused struggles in there friendship. Is that really Clarkes fault?
Apparently a lot of other players also had a real dislike for Katich also. Clarke is captaining really well, suggestions that he is causing the issues in the Australian Cricket team just frustrate the hell out of me.
Haddin’s keeping in the last test was excellent, and aside from the second test his work with the gloves is miles ahead of Wade and his batting well. Apparently his also the 2nd best skipper in Australia behind Clarke, so his leadership would also be valued.
I don’t mind negative opinions on Australian Cricket, Lyon’s bowling really annoys me, but not when it’s incorrect/rumors
10 reasons the outlook's bleak for Aussie cricket
I’m aware of that, and as I’ve said it’s more about the timing of the entire ASADA investigation and Essendon, not so much about being here for Robinsons interview.
What was missing from Dean Robinson's interview?
Thanks mate! Appreciate it, and no I don’t get paid as an amateur writer. Can I get you to write a letter to The Roar CEO’s? 😀
What was missing from Dean Robinson's interview?
I was expecting a lot more from this article, I agree with the theory but you let yourself down with some points. ‘Steve Johnson doesn’t go through the middle much anymore’, really? And Jimmy Bartel does?
You also think Cam Guthrie is going to spend more time in the midfield? He was majorly an on baller last year, spending minimal time down back. Tom Hawkins going through the ruck is also laughable.
HOWEVER I agree with your main point that Geelong will come back strong this year, I reckon it all comes down to Clark. If he can kick over 35 goals this year Geelong are right in the hunt, there defense is 9/10 going to be more than reliable. The midfield will also improve, with players like Duncan, Caddy and Horlin-Smith needing to take a step up to help cover Christensen.
