If Melbourne can beat St Kilda and North Melbourne next year, then they are a chance. They also need to win more games at Etihad stadium. Without improvement on those two counts they will be hanging around but not inside the top 8.

Which bottom teams will rise in 2017?

I disagree that Sam is a ‘High profile AFL commentator”. I think the whole point is how low his profile is, he feels the need to desperately try to get some attention. The footy public stopped listening long ago.

Sam Newman defends Eddie, calls Caro an "embarrassment"

When Kruijswijk was out to a three minute lead I thought he had the race stitched up. And when Nibali was more than 4 minutes down I completely wrote him off. How wrong I was! Just goes to show you that you can’t write off a champion. Saved all his best form for the last two stages and blew the competition away. Chaves would have been furiously taking notes if he wasn’t turning himself inside out trying to match it with him. I am stoked for Orica-Greenedge. What a professional outfit they seem to be. To finish second at their first legitimate general classification attempt is unbelievable.

Nibali and Chaves save the Giro

Sean do you think Chaves can win the Giro? He seems to be climbing at least as well as Kruijswijk but can he claw back 2 minutes?

'Aussie' Esteban Chaves on track for Giro podium after winning Queen Stage

It’s been a quiet Giro by OGE standards. They would be getting used to stage wins and pink jerseys raining from the heavens in past years but not so far this time around. I suppose Michael Matthews has been responsible for some of those victories and is a more seasoned professional than Caleb. Good to see Chaves mixing it up with the big GC riders on the hills. Hopefully he can have a good solid top 10 finish.

Giro sprints a harsh reality for Caleb Ewan

What I am seeing from the Demons for the first time in a long time this year is class. Brayshaw, Oliver, Tyson, Salem, Viney, Hogan the obvious ones. Just so nice to be able to attach that word to a Demons outfit.

Melbourne out of hell: Demons on the rise

I agree with your article. The Demons look to have a competitive line up this year, but need some of those players to make the giant leap into elite territory to propel the side into the top 8. I agree Dom Tyson could be one of those even though last season he was disappointing. Perhaps if Jack Watts can finally get his act together he can add a bit to the forward line. Kicked 3 goals on the weekend apparently.

2016 AFL preview series: Melbourne Demons

This guy seems capable of pulling off these incredible rides yet has failed to make a huge impact on the World tour. Any thoughts Tim?

Jack Bobridge gives the performance of a master

Never been a fan of the man. Always the first to praise his team mates after a win, but often quick to blame them if he doesn’t.

Mark Cavendish: Portrait of a speedster

I am so pleased for Sagan. He had a fantastic tour de france without claiming a stage victory. And to get the win by putting in such a great move was all the better for mine. Shame for the Aussies but Matthews will have more opportunities in the future.

Sagan’s class act and Matthews' disappointment

You are 100% correct. Watts wouldn’t get a game at Fremantle.

Watts to be done with Jack?

Trade him while he still has any currency. 18th in the best and fairest in a team that finished 13th. By that count he is only just hanging onto a spot in the side. Brayshaw in just his first year finished 11th. It is eternally frustrating to me and most Demon supporters to see a player with obvious God given talent waste that talent with poor work rate and effort. I really think after 7 seasons we have seen the best he has to offer and it is mediocre. I would be very surprised if he makes any more impact at another club. In fact I think he would struggle to get a game at most competitive clubs (see Colin Sylvia as an example.)

Watts to be done with Jack?

I look forward to seeing how Richmond respond next year to the added pressure that a successful 2015 will bring. The Tigers have not traditionally responded well to high expectations and were lucky to make the finals last year after finishing 5th in 2013. They could learn a lot from Port Adelaide’s experience this year and won’t want to follow their path.

How far can the Tigers go?

In the last few years we have seen the sprinter who has dominated the tour finish it off with a win in Paris. I expect no different and I am tipping Greipel. I would love to see Sagan win though. And that would really prove your point Sean!

One last prediction for the 2015 Tour de France

In good form today Tim. I would say your writing hand is getting better as the tour progresses. I feel bad for the gardener. He really seems like a good guy of the peloton and he hasn’t put a foot wrong. And Froome seems unstoppable even when isolated. I don’t think we have had a good battle for the yellow jersey in the 3rd week of the tour since 2011. Mainly thanks to the Skybots.

What happened in le Tour last night? Tejay is van Goner-en

I’m with you Sean. Porte is not doing himself any favours at all getting dropped so frequently at this year’s tour. Still big question marks for mine. But we all used to say the same about a certain Sir Brad.

Can Porte and van Garderen play happy families at BMC?

I think you make some good points Bryan. I find Sagan frustrating in a way. He obviously has a lot of talent but hasn’t been able to convert that onto the score sheet in the last two years. Watching him in the classics is eternally frustrating. He has a bad habit of attacking way too far from the finish and then being caught and running out of legs. I know what you are saying Sean about his sprinting prowess, but he seems to win very few bunch sprints.

Peter Sagan is not a pure sprinter, or is he?

Rigoberto Uran? If he were to go there, he would add some star climbing power to an already incredible all round line up.

Tour de France Stage 9: Time trials, coke and personalities

I wonder where he will go. I can’t see an obvious world tour team in desperate need of a leader in the Grand Tours except for OGE. However they don’t appear to have the personnel at this stage to support an all out assault on a grand tour podium. BMC has been touted as his likely destination but it would seem they are pretty happy with the gardener at the moment.

Tour de France Stage 9: Time trials, coke and personalities

Cry me a river. Try being a Demons supporter.

Stop talking yourself up Collingwood, second is the first loser

Green jersey for Sagan, and nearly matching it with the climbers. He certainly seems in good form but just can’t seem to get over the line in first place! It seems that he is stuck in the middle, not a pure sprinter and not quite good enough on the climbs.

Winners and losers at the 2015 Tour de France

I think after Etixx won another stage last night with Cavendish back on the podium, they need to be up there with the winners. Three stage wins and the yellow jersey makes them easily the most successful outfit so far. Also a bit hard on Sagan I think.

Winners and losers at the 2015 Tour de France

I also think Degenkolb for the stage. He doesn’t mind a bit of uphill and has been in great form this year. I’m sure he would like to cap off his best season to date with a stage win at the Tour. But Sagan looked in good touch yesterday so I think it might be between those two.

Good luck to him I say. I always thought he seems an unassuming, likeable fellow. I would love to see him take the next step and challenge the big guns.

Can Van Garderen make the Tour de France podium?

Cav lost Renshaw’s wheel long before he opened up his sprint. I thought it looked more like Etixx disorganisation rather than them losing riders too early.

Has Mark Cavendish lost his edge?
