The most meaningless of any raw average is the keeper batting at 7. Wow! a big statement. It would be helpful and interesting to see some stats to support this statement. But I see only conjecture in the rest of your comment. It is an interesting comment you make because the same argument can be applied to any position in the order, apart from perhaps the openers.

'Border-esque': A call to arms for Tim Paine

Well if Tim Paine retires from cricket, and we don’t hear any more unpleasant stuff about him then I reckon he has got his priorities in order.

'Border-esque': A call to arms for Tim Paine

Don’t emulate anyone Pat – you are good enough as you are. Those banging on about injuries are too negative. No risk no reward

DAMIEN FLEMING: The two great Test captains Pat can emulate, as moment arrives for Fast Bowling Cartel

Happy with Cummins’ appointment. I am ambivalent with Smith’s. I hope they make a solid leadership team that is respected and leads us to the top of the real (test) cricket tree!

'It could look different': Cummins explains radical change, and 'unreasonable pressure' exposed by Paine scandal

Cummins is the best choice for captain. I would have preferred Carey or Labuschagne as vc to keep sending the message that cheating is a large no-no. Carey in for the incumbent Paine. Head in the incumbent Wade.

'He should not be vice captain': Warne opposes Smith call as Cummins confirmed as skipper

The right decision for all concerned. Over at Karen Rolton Track, Khawaja has just walked to the crease with QLD at 2 for not much, and importantly Carey is doing well behind the stumps…

'Extremely concerned': Paine takes 'mental health break' putting him OUT of first Test with career in doubt

But Paine is the “best keeper in the world” says Lyon and his fellow Aussie bowlers. They would know – all playing for the same state. Even if Paine is the “best keeper in the world”, will he still be that good when, if selected, he deals with the effects of the flak from the Barmy Army and others? And will that flak adversely affect other Aussie players?

Ashes Scout: 'Emotionally it had a massive impact' - Johnson's advice for Paine ahead of Barmy Army taunts

Regardless of what you think of Paine, he deserves some mercy

temper, temper

Strange moment as SA opener's furious response to unusual Qld act earns him a talking-to

MM for captain

Australia needs a captain who's handsome (but not too handsome): Step forward, Watto

Cummins (c) Carey (vc) Labuschagne (dvc)

No room for Justin Langer on CA's five-person panel to make captaincy call

Who is the best captain from the possibles? Answer: Cummins. OK then let’s choose him. Oh, hang on a minute!… what if er, if er, if er…..

Spot on Afghanistan! Bailey took the role as selector knowing that Paine was the captain and he would have to make selection decisions about him. A selection decision arises and Bailey removes himself from the process. It is a bad precedent. A person was chosen to do a task, and stated, sometime after taking on that task, that he will not carry it out in a particular situation.

'It's your job!' Mark Waugh blasts George Bailey's 'really weird' plan to avoid Paine selection call

Here’s hoping Pat gets the nod. All this chat about bowlers breaking down is just negative, baseless talk. Pollock, Imran, Dev, Holder and Co. did OK. Carey or Labuschagne for vc. Paine can retire now, rather than at the end of this Ashes series

'I'm always cooked bowling': Pat once shared captaincy concern, but on verge of top job after CA interview

Tasmania lose SIX wickets for just 32 runs as fringe Ashes quick runs riot

The key point about keeping ability is this: The proportion of catches taken (total taken over total taken + total dropped) and proportion of stumpings made, are better measures to compare keeping quality. Often, one can’t be confident about the conclusions made from comparisons of FC averages with test averages, because it is not only better bowling attacks in tests, that are different between FC cricket and test cricket. As one example of a difference: batsmen concentrate harder in tests. And there are many more differences that could be important in determining performances. Gilly’s test average was 47.6 but his FC average was 44.2.

Payne’s FC average is 30.2, Carey’s FC average is 35.7. At 30, Carey is 7 years younger than Paine, so age-related issues are less likely to affect Carey’s future batting and keeping performances than Paine’s. Dismissal rate is not a good measure of keeping performance mainly because it is also a function of the bowlers’ capabilities. Any particular keeper’s catches per match would, (almost always) be higher if he kept to Cummins than if he kept to a 1st-grade bowler for example. The proportion of catches taken (total taken over total taken + total dropped) and proportion of stumpings made, are better measures to compare keeping quality, but I don’t think those stats are available.

His median score was 27 for that series

Carey certainly deserves to have a go, but if George Bailey and his selectors say, ‘No, we’re going to go young and build the future’, then it looks like Josh Inglis or Jimmy Peirson, but I’d say it’s Josh Inglis, who has absolutely jammed the door with his foot.” Warnie is saying that Carey should be the keeper unless the selectors want to choose someone younger

Joy of six: Paine makes strong return but Warne says it's time to move on, names successor

It is his batting that is the problem

If they did consider it at the time they made the decision, they probably concluded that she would not release. If they concluded she would release, they probably would not have allowed Paine to captain.

I agree Warnie. Out: Paine In: Carey. Let’s hope the “move on” occurs very soon

Yeah, that’s what I think
