How far away is Nareki?

Why Super Rugby Pacific is a failure when it comes to selecting match-ready Test teams

Despite all the criticism of Foster (a lot which I agree with) he did say that the past couple of seasons were about blooding players, with this year and next about building combinations.

In the words of Joey Wheeler, whoever they pick out of Mo’unga and Barrett at 10, they need to pick and stick unless there is an injury. Back a horse and give them time in the saddle to mix metaphors 😛

As for the Crusaders backline, they sure were impressive but Havili has already been found out at test level, Goodhue looks short of a gallop, Reece while a good finisher is a pest (possibly a good thing if he’s on your team, but just seemed like a clown during Super).

Vakatawa was born in Rangiora, NZ too I see 😱

How will the Super Rugby Pacific final impact All Blacks selection?

Hope he’s good at recruiting, we (the Highlanders) are in dire need of some new blood!

How will the Super Rugby Pacific final impact All Blacks selection?

Nic’s analysis really highlighted for me the role that Havili played as a ‘second five-eighth’ rather than as an ‘inside centre’. My concern is that Havili’s size was really found out in the big games at the end of last year. An interesting challenge for Foster and co.

Interesting comment re Goodhue and Ioane. According to Wikipedia (unreliable I know), Rieko is both taller and heavier than Goodhue.

I’d argue they both struggle behind a back peddling pack. Mo’unga struggled against Ireland and France last year, Barrett struggled last night.

REACTION: 'A complete performance'- Crusaders dominate Blues to take Super Rugby Pacific crown

No one called him a plodder, I said powder puff 😛

People have fairly short memories. It was Mo’unga who played 60 minutes vs Ireland and started against the French last year, not Barrett. Neither game went particularly well from memory. BOTH Barrett and Mo’unga are quality players, but as we all know it starts up front.

I’m not a professional rugby player, let alone an All Black. What a stupid comment.

Akira is, and remains, a slow moving powder puff

Easier to do when your forwards are dominating…he was very good tonight though, as was Havili (surprisingly)

Why Akira, he’s everything that Blackadder isn’t. The Will Skelton of NZ rugby.

ANALYSIS: Plenty of positives in All Blacks squad but Ian Foster's lingering indecision in two key areas could prove costly

He only had 128 tests and was Captain for 4 years…

Cane is rated, the question is does he have the ability to play successive games without injury? We could build a good loose forward trio around him, as long as he stays on the field for a continued period of time.

Agreed, as soon as I see an article by him I have to stop reading. Happy for someone else to read and digest it though 😛

Thanks, will try and check it out. As I said, it’s effective tool when done properly, but it should be more of a contest for the ball like pretty much every other part of rugby.

How the Brumbies lost their semi-final ‘State of Origin’ against the Blues

If players can be in front of the hall from the attacking team, why can’t the defending team have a fair crack at the ball too??

I’m still dirty on Matera. Sam Gilbert gets 5 weeks (possibly too lenient!) and Matera gets nothing, even with 3 cards in the space of a couple of weeks. I get the ‘team card’ thing, but it just seems unjust.

And the knock on prior to the yellow card…

Thanks Nic, good analysis as always.

As an aside, I’m torn on rolling mauls as an attacking weapon. They’re highly effective when done well, but very dour and somewhat a cop-out that teams use when they don’t have other areas of attacking dominance (I’m a Highlanders fan and they also seem to use them a lot when they’ve got no other ideas, eg against Moana Pasifika earlier in the season).

For me, there just needs to be fairer way for defending teams to neutralise the maul. At the moment it’s too far weighted in the attacking team’s favour. I don’t know the answer, perhaps defenders should be allowed to ‘swim’ around the maul and disrupt as long as they stay bound. Much like how half backs can go ‘offside’ at scrum time.

Not bad insights, but I challenge you to pick a better alternative for each of these picks.

ALL BLACKS SQUAD: 'He's still a project' - RTS makes cut despite doubts, Fakatava in and TJ Perenara out

Agreed. I don’t rate Akira. Would’ve had Blackadder there if fit.

The Wrap: Did Super Rugby end up with the right teams in the final?

Good squad. Need to work on top team and combinations now. Thought de Groot would be there for sure.

The problem with neutral referees is where do they come from? It’s basically a NZ/Oz competition.
