Liam Dawson is probably the closest to the last option you mention (a batter who can bowl spin), and is also a left armer. But he is more of an all-rounder than Maxwell and Head. He averages 32 in county cricket, so he would probably bat at eight if he was in the side.

Dan Lawrence is a batter who can bowl some pretty decent legbreaks. He’s only twenty, but he’s already played 40 games in county cricket and averages in the early forties with the bat. He bowls more in the shorter forms, with pretty impressive stats in the few T20 games he’s played, but he’s certainly handy with the ball. It might a bit too soon for him, but maybe having the option wouldn’t be a bad thing.

How England may look without Ben Stokes

I don’t think the selectors have always gotten it right, but the fixtures are bizarre, with Australia having played a bizarre amount of ODI’s this year.

In the end, David Warner has outscored New Zealand, but early on it was the visitors who were on top.

They started brilliantly and were well on top when they had Australia 4/73 in the first innings. However, Warner and Head then shared an 100 run stand, Head falling for 37, Warner batting on for an incredible 156.

As it turned out, Head’s 37 was the second largest score of the game, as only Warner seemed to figure out the two paced pitch. Yet New Zealand still began the chase well, finding themselves 1/74 with both Guptill and Williamson looking strong. Yet as it turned out, at this stage they had already scored more than half their runs, as they finished all out for 147.

All the bowlers chipped in for Australia, Starc finishing with the best bowling figures of the game with 3/34. But perhaps the biggest surprise was Travis Head, who took 2/37, claiming the massive wickets of Guptill and Watling.

In the end the game was very one sided, with Australia winning by 117 runs, but early on things looked as though they could be drastically different.

WICKET, BOULT CAUGHT SECOND SLIP

What a stunning catch from Smith, good enough to rival his catch in Sydney. Cummins was brought back on and first ball delivered a good length ball, just outside off. Boult stepped away and looked to cut the ball down to third man. He only got a thick outside edge and SMith dived high and too his right, plucking the ball out of the air when it seemed more likely to go for four.

Cummins is back on here.

Another good over from Faulkner, who is frustrated at not finishing things off here, but is bowling quite well regardless.

Ferguson once more drives just short of cover. NZ are just delaying the inevitable though.

That’s the end of Starc for today. He finishes with 3/34 off his ten. He was not great in his first spell, but has been sensational since and could easily have had more than the three wickets he finishes with.

That was really nicely played by Boult. Starc delivered another brilliant yorker, but unlike those above him Boult managed to dig it out.

I think that’s a good point. Their last ODI series against SA was pretty woeful and they rested plenty of players there, so its good to see they have changed their philosophy a bit.

Ferguson almost lofts a drive to Cummins at cover. but the ball falls safe.

A good over from Faulkner who has improved slightly as the innings has gone on and massively from Canberra. He now has 2/24.

The batters crossed, so Ferguson is on strike. Though Ferguson gets a single off the next ball putting Boult on strike for the final ball of the over.

Boult is now in, Australia one wicket from a whitewash.

WICKET, SOUTHEE CAUGHT COVER 4

Southee was looking to go big but only managed to go high. Faulkner offered him a full one, and while Southee got under it, he was far to early on the shot, skying a very simple catch for Warner. Faulkner now has his second.

Ferguson is off the mark in his ODI career in a less that convincing fashion. Defending a ball uppishly to the leg side and then nearly getting run out.

Ferguson somehow survives that over. Its a maiden, but every ball seemed to test the tailender, Starc is really looking strong here.

It really was a good decision, picking that up live must have been tough.

Starc delivers a knee high full toss there and nearly knocks over Ferguson in the process, shooting past the outside edge.

The ball has hit the glove, as it pops up to at slip, but because his hand was off the bat, the decision remains NOT OUT.

APPEAL FOR A CATCH.

REVIEWED by Smith

Ferguson got a duck in his first ODI innings, he’ll be hoping desperately to avoid another here.

Watching Southee bat is never dull, he finishes the over by lofting a pull to the leg side for two. Faulkner bowled nicely there, getting his variations spot on and getting close to dismissing Southee.

Southee just survives, the ball just missing the stumps as he advanced down the pitch and looked to clear the stadium.

Your right, I thought it would be much clearer, but that was pretty close.
