But can he improve his footy smarts rather than the ways to avoid commitment to teamwork ethics?

NRL News: Ivan clearly impressed with 'marquee' Fifita, 'I've done nothing wrong - Gus calls in lawyer over fine

Hey Panthers, hope your guys aren’t awake to our sneaky maroon plan. Get lazy dave into your camp, infect them with the malaise he takes to the squads he joins, blunts the current Penrith NRL superiority and clearing the way for your streak to end. Oops, cat out of the bag.

NRL News: Ivan clearly impressed with 'marquee' Fifita, 'I've done nothing wrong - Gus calls in lawyer over fine

Interesting to see if Gould ‘has called in the lawyers’ to go to the appeals tribunal or is thinking to the courts instead. If he goes the full legal course and is unsuccessful, I hope the NRL go the whole hog and pursue him for their costs. Maybe the way to get him off our screens is for all of the NRL commissioners involved in approving the rule changes in question to sue him for slander, given he’s stated publicly that they are incapable of doing their job.

Olly was a gun for Wests then Valleys in the BRL, played origin but went to Balmain too late in his career. Great game manager, tough tackler with vision but just lacked the pace to cause regular damage. Anyone who played origin back then has to be a good player.

Luke, Lachlan and Lewis: If NRL clubs can't find 7s, it’s because they created a lost generation of halfbacks

That Cowboys v Dolphins game is a real contest of the wannabe’s, isn’t it. On various occasions during the season they’ve both given the impression they’re a final 8 contender then they throw in a lacklustre effort that makes you want to drop off them. At home, the cowboys should be able to do enough but that right centre role is proving problematic with both rookies sustaining injuries just when they looked to be locking down their position. Val Holmes to kick them to a tight win.

The Roar's NRL expert tips and predictions, Round 9: Can Rabbitohs avoid a mauling? Roosters out for Bronco blood

Geez, Khan-Pereira has to be a bit hard done by at the Titans, one of a few backs that can score a try if given an inch of space. Sami has had a fair chance to cement his spot & doesn’t do enough consistently to lock down his spot. They’ll end up losing the young bloke to a club up the ladder & he’ll come back to bite them.

Round 9 Team Lists Late Mail: Benji makes surprise call on Koroisau, Roosters trio OUT as Broncos sweat on Haas

Hutcho is basically a halfback playing in a forwards body. He does have good skills and can see the gaps but struggles to get through them as the pace isn’t there. If he had Mam & Walsh or Luai & Edwards to feed, he’d be in the role for yonks. I often compare current players to someone from the old days, I see him as a Greg Oliphant type but not quite the class.

Luke, Lachlan and Lewis: If NRL clubs can't find 7s, it’s because they created a lost generation of halfbacks

Is Sexton a poor defender, I always thought he had decent all-round skills, never saw him as a weak link any more than an Ezra Mam or going back a JT. They’ve missed the odd tackle but regularly held on until help arrives and I wouldn’t like those 115kg forwards aiming at me.

Luke, Lachlan and Lewis: If NRL clubs can't find 7s, it’s because they created a lost generation of halfbacks

One of the problems with the salary cap is player managers think that if their client is a halfback or fullback, they’re entitled to premium ‘halfback money’ or ‘fullback money’ based on the rare elite incumbents of those roles. They don’t seem to get the concept of serving an apprenticeship first. Think it’s a Gen Z thing, pumped up parents, teachers, coaches etc to think they’re high achievers when they learn to wipe their backside.

Luke, Lachlan and Lewis: If NRL clubs can't find 7s, it’s because they created a lost generation of halfbacks

The bulldogs had Sexton there for a short time too, didn’t they? Can’t understand why someone doesn’t persist with him, think he’s got better skills than a lot in that age group.
Clifford, Sexton, Flanagan, Biondi-Odo, Arthur, Asi, Turner, Sullivan, Weekes, O’Sullivan and the rest are just stuck in a revolving door.

Luke, Lachlan and Lewis: If NRL clubs can't find 7s, it’s because they created a lost generation of halfbacks

That’s my point, if there’s creativity from a number of players in the orchestra you just need the conductor to do his job. Reynolds doesn’t try to do all the running, he just steers them around, has a crack at the line often enough to ensure the defence doesn’t drop off, kicks into the right spaces most times and backs up down the middle. It helps to have a tough forward pack up front as well. I have to give credit to Reynolds for his maturity in leading that young broncos team around the field, don’t think he was a big personality in that Souths team who saw people like Inglis, Mitchell, Walker, Burgess etc as their leaders. It’s been good for him as well as for the broncos and he’s seen footy from outside that inner-Sydney rugby league bubble. Given what he’s shown since coming to Brisbane, I reckon he’s got a skills coaching job (at the least) at the broncos for life. Why wouldn’t Mam, Madden & that young half in Coby Black hang around and learn from him.

Luke, Lachlan and Lewis: If NRL clubs can't find 7s, it’s because they created a lost generation of halfbacks

Another Bennett assistant inheriting his team bites the dust, how many is that now? You’d have to question how Hornby gets the role as coach for 2/3 of a season when he’s been part of the coaching set up since the pre-season, has he secretly disagreed with JD but too scared to speak up and if so, is that who they want in charge? If Josh Hannay isn’t on a short list for the next vacant NRL senior coaching role, there’s something wrong with the selection process. Souths won’t chase him, they’ll fall back on the club legend approach and give Burgess the job.

Bumbling Bunnies board, players, executives and Demetriou all deserve share of blame game after coach's demise

Interesting take, I reckon a lot of creativity has disappeared from the game since coaches implemented zone systems. Even forwards with flair have become left or right channel specialists. As a bronco fan, I live in hope that Reynolds holds up for this season & next. I thought Madden looked better as a 6 than he has as a 7 so Mam inherits the 7 in my book with Madden as the less dominant 6 eventually. Madden seems to be patient enough to hang around, hope his manager is the same because they’re often the problem. Walker won’t ever play for the broncs, I think his future is locked in long term at the roosters. You’ve only got to see how much better Brooks is going at Manly to realise the second fiddle playmaker under less pressure is still very valuable to the team.

This ranking ladder is subjective, just used to demonstrate who’s in form at a point in time. The premiership ladder determines who plays off in the final series at the end of the season so it is the only one that counts. The Storm have only clicked in a few games so far, still think they’re a bit light on in the pack if every club has their full roster available when it counts.

NRL Power Rankings: Round 8 - Rabbits hit rock bottom, Warriors show signs of complacency, Dragons' bubble bursts

Interesting take on the Warriors but not sure they’ve ever been in a position to be complacent. If you count the Christchurch win over the Raiders as a home game, they’ve won two, lost 2 and drawn one at home. The two wins (Knights & Raiders) were against teams generally not considered to be top 8 material and they were beaten by the previously winless Titans. Take out their 30 point away win over a grossly underachieving South Sydney and they appear to be seriously overrated. The 2023 Dally M coach of the year should be concerned as they’re not great travellers and their away games now include the cowboys/bulldogs/raiders/dolphins/sea eagles of which quite a few will be contenders for those 3-8 ladder spots. Also meeting Penrith at Suncorp in magic round instead of an Auckland home fixture. If he loses Johnson for any stretch of games, they are in serious trouble. Webster will be hoping he runs up against teams impacted by state of origin selections during that interstate series, otherwise the Warriors are in danger of missing the top eight.

Probably is as good defensively but Walsh gets pulled up for the shoulder charges.

Koroisau limps out of Tigers' defeat to Broncos after being cruelled by the harshest Bunker call of the year

Surely nobody suggests Benji is a chance of the sack, he’d have to get 3 years to rebuild, it can’t be an 8 game plan. Oates must be on tenterhooks, turns slower than the Quuen Mary & lags a long way behind the quick guys if they make a break.

Koroisau limps out of Tigers' defeat to Broncos after being cruelled by the harshest Bunker call of the year

Think you’re spot on about Nanai, too many missed tackles this season. Think he needs to be playing more minutes to get fitter and shed some rust because he seems to get gassed quickly, maybe carrying an injury?

Maroons Origin predicted team: Slater forced to make changes after injuries sideline some certain selections

I noticed a few weeks back that Koriosau had to bleach his hair as punishment for a misdemeanour at the tigers. Reece Walsh wouldn’t cop that if the broncs implemented it.

You do get the irony from my moniker, right?

PS: Kevvie is also a twin so had to share everything with Kerrod until they were split up.

Heroes versus villains: An NRL showdown of nice guys up against the nasty mongrels

Surely Kevin Walters pips Webster for the coaching spot for the good guys team. He’s been in the public eye a lot longer and yet to see or hear anything that could sully his exemplary character.

Heroes versus villains: An NRL showdown of nice guys up against the nasty mongrels

Not quite sure ‘it’s more important to attend to his welfare & mental health issues’ is the right message to send him and the public. Seems every time a player stuffs up, the mental health card is played to protect them, maybe a few home truths and kick in the ar*e would be better. This generation of players have never had it so good, a run of the mill first grader is guaranteed to earn upwards of $350k. How hard is it to accept that the good pay & conditions (they’re spoon fed) come with responsibilities. Trindall just hasn’t appeared to have stuffed up, he’s allegedly got the trifecta of suspended licence, over the limit of alcohol and positive test for an illicit substance. Pity when he’s finally locked down that 5/8 role after a few years of in & out of the team. Bang goes his outside shot at a shadow 5/8 role for the maroons if there are injuries in that position.

I’ll jump in early, NSW look the better side on paper. Should be odds on for a clean sweep.

Well in my younger days way back most people took the car to work on Fridays because public transport stopped before we wanted to. You live & learn.
