Carlton's rebuild is starting from weak foundations

We traded away this years’ second round

Crystal ball Blues for Carlton

Cuningham had 25 touches and was one of the Northern Blues’ best on the weekend.

You’re all class Josh. My comment wasn’t allowed to be posted because I said it was a lazy piece. Are you alright mate? Dry your eyes.

Get the spoon ready for Carlton, they're forked

Enjoyable read Ken. Few laughs in there too. Solid analysis. However, do you seriously believe there is no star talent (like Jesse Hogan) to be found among the likes of Harry McKay, Charlie Curnow, Jarrod Pickett, Sam Petrevski-Seton? I would say they all have star talent. Silvagni could even be a star. Extremely exciting group and all potential match winners. It’s a very premature assessment to say they aren’t star quality. You said it yourself that they average 7 games between them. I’ll have your crystal ball when you’re done please

The Carlton Rebuild FAQ

You have written a nice article here. I agree with the vast majority of what you have said. I agree with Macca that your team doesn’t have enough youth in it though. To answer your question about whether the forward line can contain all 4 of Dennis Armfield, Rhys Palmer, Liam Sumner and Jed Lamb I can say, No. There is not enough talent there. There are other more talented options available like Pickett, LeBois and Polson. Even tiny Fisher in a pocket is preferential to two of those 4 lesser skilled albeit more experienced smalls. We need our small forwards to manufacture goals from nothing due to our forward half deficiencies and you need talent to do that. I also think you were too harsh on Andrew Phillips. He was arguably Carlton’s most improved player last year and we all know how long ruckman normally take to come of age. Usually around 100 games or 25 years of age. Phillips is now 25 and has only played 30 AFL games. He is tracking very well. Also Marchbank is a certain starter in my opinion. Probably Pickett too. A word on Bolton gifting games for those commenting on it above. I think Bolton was desperate to see out new draftees in the senior team last year and while not being gifted games they it only took a few decent games in the VFL to warrant selection. I’m sure the same will be done this year. A few good games on the trot for the Northern Blues will warrant selection for out new draftees. Nice article, Well done.

2017 AFL preview series: Carlton Blues - 17th

Thanks Darren, it’s nice of you to say so. I follow the Blues pretty closely. It’s looking to me as though Cunningham will play and Sam PS is likely to play round 1. They will need to go OK in lead up matches or single VFL match in PS’s case. Cuningham would be the only amendment I would make at this stage. PS was only not included due to injury anyway. Take your pick from some of the smaller guys who will come out. I’m certain Smedts will start round 1. We can have a little wager if you like 😉 Gorringe a chance to play also as back up ruck. Will be between him and Rowe

It’s a better team than last season. For what it’s worth I think we will win round 1. How can you have that attitude when we have so many exciting new draftees from the past 2 seasons that we haven’t had a look at yet?

Carlton's best 22 for the opening clash vs Richmond

Thanks Brinnx, I agree that the competition for spots is tougher this year. For some positions in particular. I don’t think guys like summer or lamb will get a look in. I think it’s also possible that all our draftees will get a run in the 1st this season. I guess injuries may not allow for that but it’s a real possibility and that’s including rookie LeBois. I think that’s what the position we are in allows us to do. Regarding Buckley’s spot I think Ciaran Sheehan may take that spot. Simon white has continued to improve a bit each year so he could take it too. Buckley has been talked up as being ready to take the next step so I’d like to see him start round 1. Like you said if older players aren’t performing the axe will swing swiftly this season.

Thanks Macca. I agonised over those two in particular. You might be right and to be perfectly honest I hope you are. As you can tell from my comments on each of them I think they are both ready to go. Despite being in the leadership group maybe Armfield makes way for Pickett. Thomas on 700K might have to come out for Cuningham. I’m just thinking that for round 1 in front of 70-80K people that it might be better to have the extra experience. The difference in total games played is significant. Let’s wait and see what the Carlton selectors think. I can’t wait
