No doubt, The AFL does the crowds, grassroots, clubs and almost every aspect of the game better than the NRL in terms of management. Moving back towards my initial points though, my theory was more in regards to why the NRL should return

Why rugby league is an essential service

Simply the fact that the Australian population is minuscule compared to the other countries leagues that zonecadet was referring to eg, USA, England, Germany etc.

Hey mate, thanks for reading.

If you’re measuring passion by game attendance, which is not necessarily the case. Elderly fans, regional supporters or those who just can’t make it arent passionate under your definition. Additionally, compared to our population, both as a nation and the city of Sydney in particular, I’d say were punching well above our weight, even with the large drop in physical attendance seen in the last decade or so.

Thanks Philip,

I think the NRL already has measures in place regarding player and staff safety, whether that be testing, screening, isolating or something else to ensure no player or staff is infected, given that they have announced a return date already. This, of course, would have to be given government approval, and given the news is public, I’d say that this has most likely occurred. By no means am I saying that Rugby League is the first choice for the world audience when they get home on a Friday evening, but in the absence of any other sport, a foreign game of big hits (with no pads) and good skills is better than nothing.

If none of the players is sick, then their contact can’t possibly make each other sick?

Why rugby league is an essential service

Hi Philip,
I’m not sure about that. I think so far, both of the parties you mentioned have foregone their own benefit for the safety and health of the general public, as much as possible.

Why rugby league is an essential service

Thanks for reading Philip. Can I ask how?

Why rugby league is an essential service

More along the lines of backing the NRLs plans and showing some alternative arguments. Although at this point it could’ve been NRL is the cure, because you’ve shown no counter-argument. Thanks for reading!

Rob, they’re not coming home to it because there is no footy on! Nevertheless, some might be very pleased to come home and watch some footy. Excluding overseas, Australia has been lucky/responded well to lessen the impact of the virus. All that I’m saying is, returning to normality is in the near future for us at this stage, and rugby league should be returning.

Why rugby league is an essential service

I 100% agree with your opening sentence. Did you happen to read the article?

Hi AJ,
I’m almost certain that a coronavirus patient would not be asymptomatic for the mandatory 2 week self-isolation (Interstate/overseas teams) and I would imagine the NRL would extend that to all of the clubs as well a the almost 2 weeks of isolation we have already been in. Are players really going to be Asymptomatic for 4 weeks? This could also serve as a shortened ‘Pre-season’ to get the players conditioned to play again.

Hi Rob,
Just because you choose to spend your money on healthcare (Now or any other time) doesn’t mean others have to. That is the nature of freedom. Very far fetched to say that I’m causing the mental health and stress levels of health professionals to rise, just because I’m writing about footy. The NRL is doing their best to find the best way forward for that and I back them 100%

Lots of games on NRL.com in the NRL TV section. Every Origin and grand finals dating way back as well as some classic games. Great to watch or re-watch.

Why rugby league is an essential service

I think this is true to an extent, and I actually agree with you on this point. If I was a player, I think the hardest part would be with regards to leaving my family. With that being said, to the best of knowledge, I believe the RLPA has made a blanket statement to the NRL saying if a competition was to be safely organised, then players would be willing to isolate away from families for it. I might be wrong but that’s my thinking.

Nope, Did you read the article champ?

Thanks for your work!

Hi Carts,
Like I’ve said in the article, I’m sure some frontline workers, battlers, heroes, in my opinion, would rejoice to be able to come home/knock off and see their favourite team playing. Same goes for any other people still working and our community as a whole. I believe V’landys is just doing his best for the game (His job). I do particularly like the way he pronounces “Rugby League” though! Sport being an essential part of society is exactly the reason we need it now more than ever.

Hi AJ,

Fines for driving/bike riding have been reversed for being stupid as far as I’m aware. Flattening the curve means we arent multiplying quicker than the day before. This is moving in a positive direction. It is easy to say that opening the NRL would cause a spike in infections. Why would people be getting infected? How would the infection enter the NRL? All players and anyone in proximity should be screened and everyone isolated before the start of the competition.

Hi Big Daddy,

By no means do I agree with that reported outcome, particularly players going home. In saying that, I di think there is a solution to be found somewhere.

Why rugby league is an essential service

Obviously not a free for all Jacko.

The NRL seems to be the only code in Aus getting its backside into gear and coming up with solutions here. Being given permission and being checked by the relevant powers at be would also be essential.

Hi Brendan,
The issue of payment is far more economic than health-related. I don’t claim to have a degree or any great experience in economics. But with what I do know, I can tell you that you only get paid what someone is willing to pay you. If someone is offering Ponga a billion a season, who are we to say he shouldn’t take it? If that’s what someone is willing to pay, good luck to him. Do I think healthcare workers and scientists deserve more money for the critical work they do now and always? No doubt! I think this is an issue you take up with their employer, not myself! However, to say that the NRL is not beneficial to society is where you go wrong. Cheers

Why rugby league is an essential service

Thanks champ, any reasons why?

Why rugby league is an essential service

Definitely Mate,

That would, in fact, help slow the spread.

Cheers

Hey mate,

Surviving we are. Flattening the curve we are. Complacency we aren’t. How is the NRL going to hinder our survival efforts?

Why rugby league is an essential service

Hi AJ,
No doubt it could be for most sports, but at least League is giving it a red hot crack. Like I said in the article, I don’t want footy at the cost of safety, however, there should be a safe way to undertake things if orchestrated correctly, ie. screening all players/staff before a comp was to re-start. With regards to what the premier of NSW has said… If I kept up with the mixed messages that every politician or so-called ‘leader’ was spreading, id have a bigger migraine than I already do! Finally, NRL had its fair share of air-time in the states. We got a sports illustrated article so not bad.Cheers https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2020/03/23/australia-rugby-nrl-hits-empty-stadium-video
