Panthers cruise to victory as Mavrik takes flight - but NRL admits the Roosters were robbed

Can the WNRL become a destination though for international female athletes looking to make a wage through playing sport.

NRLW expansion announced, with new club named and a heavyweight return - and another kick for Souths

Yes, I was there. Up from Hertfordshire. Took my kids to see their first live Panthers game.

Good game, great atmosphere but geez Wigan is depressing, and you captured it well.

'Welcome to Wigan, dickhead': Rugby league's a different ball game in the concrete jungle of post-Thatcher Britain

But this wasn’t a late tackle. Not one person has said that.

The MRC ruling was that he was trying to pull out of the tackle and both players ended up in the same place and clashed heads. To then it was an accident.

The referee thought he has a ‘duty to bend’. That suggests that the referee thought he should have got low. And there is no way of getting low in that situation without bracing for contact.

As I have said I think May should have been suspended, and this is consistent with Anneslry’s interpretation. He was the defender and there was (pretty violent) head contact. I would have it as careless.

The point being three parts of the ‘apparatus of the state’ ruled this differently. What is obvious is that injuries like the one Walsh has should be avoided at all costs, but the game isn’t clear on how to do that.

Ultimately we might need to get to a point where that type of hit doesn’t exist, the ‘dangerous blindside’ hit ruling from the NFL if you like. It would need to be more onerous on defenders than in the NFL, because as this situation has demonstrated, we don’t wear helmets.

But if this is the route we go down we need to understand the implications. It is going to tip the scales more in favour of the attackers. I am fine with that btw; I am a realist who would rather watch league with less big hits than watch no league at all. but a conversation needs to be had about whether the balance is right. and are there other rules that could be added (ie no dummies is an example that should be discussed, if only to raise the level of debate about the underlying issues) that both balance the game and (ultimately) help to protect the attacker.

Game’s gone soft, huh? League's tough enough without dangerous incidents getting feather touch from judiciary

My challenge with that is if he bends, collects Walsh in the stomach/ribs and Walsh gets injured then he is suspended for that as well.

The league has been trying to get players to pull out of that type of challenge and that is what May did here (that is how Payten described it when explaining the MRC decision). However, when we still have players operating at speed and unable to disappear, so there will be collisions. I think league needs to pick its poison; either the lower rib ticklers or attempting to avoid the tackle and we have the potential to get what we did the other night.

I am in the camp that May was lucky not to have a week on the sideline, but I think that the league needs to clarify what it wants players to do in that situation. The reality is that the league is likely to say they just don’t want the defender to put themselves into the position where a choice is required; which will be another example of the attacker being favoured over the defender.

Maybe they can ban the dummy from the game to even it up and protect the ball runner?

I remember Jorgo Snr running around for Penrith. He had a couple of games and was amazing, but then had a leg injury and after that he looked like he was running in treacle.

Sport can be cruel and your earning potential can be short.

Or he could play 15 years and be both a league and union legend; I hope it is the latter!!

NRL News: Panthers unfazed by Cleary injury, Sivo tightens up tackling technique to avoid further bans

Good capturing of the atmosphere at the game, which was cracking.

I don’t have the rules in front of me, but I would guess that the rule book doesn’t differentiate between what part of a tacklers body comes in contact with the head, just that head contact is not allowed.

'Duty to bend' debate over Walsh hit overshadows 'absolute genius' Cleary torturing Broncos in statement Panthers win

I agree. Should have been a penalty and maybe a binning; he has a duty of care not to make contact with the head of an opponent.
Edit: just read Dutski say exactly the same thing just a little lower.

I could have lived with Luai getting a week for the high shot, although Simonson was obviously falling which both contributes to him being hit in the head and exacerbated the contact. Obviously the MRC agreed. Still, really unlucky for the eels to lose a player that early in the match to foul play, as it had a big bearing on the game.

I can’t remember the last time a player got suspended for a trip.

Being hearing this from the Roosters for years; taught to constantly infringe the rules and then complain about penalty count. Coach then supports the players when they grub it up.

'I don't care if I'm swearing': Latrell set to escape NRL sanctions despite foul-mouthed radio interview

Stevenage; if Latrell said exactly the same as he did say in the article, except with no swearing, nobody would have been complaining.

You also can’t have it both ways; can’t be the showman when winking and expect everyone to leave you alone when you lose. When you talk up your own brand as much as Latrell does, you a) have to deliver week in, week out and b) expect attention.

And no, I am not meaning the racist crap that he does get from some fans, but Triple M putting a microphone in his going to happen every week win, lose or draw…

Not sure what your comment is referring too; discipline and consistency has been the hallmark of Penriths three-peat..

NRL News: Robbo regrets his words but insists Leniu 'not racist', Cowboy targets Blues spot, Joey's surprise best coach

The Roosters are never wrong in Robbo’s eyes; always a misunderstanding or some form of conspiracy against his team. I do wonder if that is the route of their ill-discipline.

Good first effort Paul. I (genuinely) hope that the reasons for you taking on the PR from Mike are about you, and not the ribbings that Mike received last year which were all supposed to be a bit of fun.

NRL Power Rankings: Round 1 - Small sample size but major concerns at a few clubs, Flanno back in style at Dragons

Well done to the Storm and their fans; too good tonight.

Good run out for my Panthers; we will win plenty of games if we play like tonight every week. Just second best tonight against a quality team.

Storm warning for competition as Bellamy's streak continues, Panthers question Bunker

Didn’t he have a chance to do that on the field after the game, or in the resort after the game.

To be fair he has been honest. He never denied it and gave an honest reflection of his values by laughing it off and then approaching the Broncos later.

I’m loving the 13th Man and his/her own personal crusade to ‘feed the algorithm’ and get the rugby league stories to the top of the page by all of his comments…

I don’t get the obsession with union fans and betting on league? Like or loathe gambling it is pervasive in many sports; just look at the front of the jerseys on many premier league teams, or watch a game on Sky. Cricket has so many markets it isn’t funny, while I have a friend who gambles professionally on tennis (I wasn’t aware it was such a liquid market until we talked about it). The American sports rules seem to have been designed to maximise statistical data points and therefore betting markets.

I’m sure union also has gambling markets associated to it, they just aren’t as liquid because rugby isn’t the number 1 sport anywhere it is played (the obvious exceptions are NZ and SA, but I must admit I have never watched or read about their local comps to know how ingrained (or not) betting is in those countries).

Rugby league needs a new name but what can you call it to stand out in football’s confusingly crowded landscape of codes?

DP; if you are not growing you are in the fast lane to oblivion.

Rugby league needs a new name but what can you call it to stand out in football’s confusingly crowded landscape of codes?

This is only an issue for league and union fans who wreak of parochialism.

The growth of Rugby League has been held back by weak administrators over time; not by a name. Thankfully that is now changing.
