At this point in time, the AFL are really only in a position to act on what Watson has said on On The Couch. They could try to hit him with bringing the game into disrepute with his comments, but an admission on a Foxtel program can not really be considered akin to a “positive” test or admission under oath. That penalty will have to wait.

How can the AFL allow Jobe to play tonight?

Neill has too much stroke in Australian football.

At this point of his career, he’s a cap collector, pure and simple. Blind Freddy could tell you he (as captain!!!) should’ve stood himself aside for that Romania friendly to let the next WCQ pair get some precious matchtime together. Holger failed that test.

Pressure on Osieck to show more than mentality and physicality

Ogre has to be in the XI, he’s fit, he’s hungry, and is a monster on the pitch.

Why do all the ‘Roos feel the need to talk up Lucas Neill? The guy is well past it, and commands a spot in the squad soley on some mythical reputation. Time for decisive action from Holger. Give the armband to Schwarzer on a permanent basis and tell Neill to get a club and some legitimate good form before putting his hand up again.

Ognenovski keen to make most of call-up

Ognenovski must start.

Osieck announces Socceroos squad for World Cup Qualifiers

Whichever group is actively supporting will have my matchday support and voice.

The betting agency partnership does make me sick. It is an embarassment, and I continue to protest this involvement.

Do people actually remember the support GGA provided pre-2006? STUNNED that folk continue to suggest the GGA are not football people.

You’re mistaking the GGA and the Fanatics, Fuss’. I abhor that bogan element as much as the next guy, but we see it creeping in everywhere these days.

While the GGA has unfortunately evolved into a “travel agent” in recent years, it was born as 100% football lovers, and active supporters. To suggest otherwise is to rewrite history.
Following the NT from the early 90’s onwards in Melb there was nothing (Sydney had Bay 23), so I was rapt when the GGA eventually appeared on the scene. (even tho’ the core of them were Carltoon SC supporters 😉 )
GGA made a presence at Aust fixtures dating back to 2000 or so.
Personally, I’ve stood side-by-side with the GGA at Oceania Nations Cup games, U23’s Oly Qualifiers, U20’s Youth World Cup Qualifiers and countless other more and less fashionable fixtures.

Respect where its due.

Wouldn’t it make much more sense for the SAS to align with the GGA and utilise those well established resources and networks rather than starting from scratch????

The major hurdle would be the AFLPA and the coaches. They already sook up a storm when they get a 6 day break.

This gripe can be easily addressed with the focus being put on better list management, and possibly larger playing lists. Not trying to start a code war, but so many other major sports cope with a tight schedule, soccer/football leagues around the world, NBA, NHL, MLB, etc.

Four days of footy: a weekly Monday night AFL match

4 year deal? VfB will likely make some good coin out of him too, if they on-sell him before this contract expires.

Rojas signs with VfB Stuttgart

That same media may also follow up and see Oakeigh ran training at their venue that very night, and call Oakleigh out for their hypocritical stance. 🙂

Don't be fooled: FFA Cup is too big a risk

You can thank Lucas Neill’s cap collecting for that.
As a leader, he should’ve done the team thing and stood aside for the Romania game and let the WCQ pair get 90 minutes alongside each other.

Football fans must stop blaming youth

South have done some hard yards since the NSL was disolved, and have now secured their future for the next 40 years or so on the back of the Lakeside redelopment. I doubt they’d be interested in risking their future by sharing a HAL licence with a hemorrhaging Melbourne Heart.

As for Heart moving to Lakeside, that is only a slight geographical difference to Bubbledome. Cheaper overheads, perhaps, but will do nothing to engage a new or wider fan-base.

It's time for the A-League to look South in Melbourne

The “shot clock” has pretty much removed this goalkicking option.

Make goalkicking the goal

Important thing is for SBS to promote their coverage. Hopefully for the good of everyone we see the billboard or bus stop poster promoting the games and that they’re screened on SBS2, SBSHD, or whatever channel it lands on.

Does it matter that the A-League isn't on SBS1?

The great thing about FTA is engaging the non-devotees. It may not be the case for you individually, but generally speaking for a viewing public the rule is “out of sight, out of mind”.

I can tell you about My Kitchen Rules, The Block, Revenge, etc. without ever seeing an episode of those shows because of the saturation advertising. Imagine of this was the case for the HAL? Advertising and promoting that the games can be found on SBS2 is vital.

Does it matter that the A-League isn't on SBS1?

All channels are not necessarily created equal. The secondary stations don’t receive anywhere near the same level of promotion as the primary channel. Joe Public could tell you Nine or Seven’s prime time schedule, but have no idea about 7TWO, 7MATE, GEM, GO!.

As long as SBS make the effort to heavily promote the games on all their channels the punters should be happy.

Does it matter that the A-League isn't on SBS1?

The AFL lost a lot of charm, and the atmosphere you crave, when it rationalised the competition to 2 Melbourne venues.
Yes, those two grounds offer great vantage points, top class facilities, are well accessible to all of Melbourne espeically compared to the old suburban grounds, and can be magic when near capacity, but there is something extremely sterile about them when half-full.

Don’t throw away what you have in Sydney without serious consideration. You’ll miss it when its gone.

Western Sydney needs to do the stadium shuffle

Frank Arok wanted to play Scotland in the heat up in Darwin. Sincerely believe we would’ve rolled the Scots had Frank’s request been met.

Why Ange isn't our next Socceroo coach

I know of these betting mobs run live totes on Vic Premier League fixtures, and even State League 1.
If there’s a ball being kicked, they want to be in on the action.

* these same syndicates even run live totes on the SEABL, the second tier basketball league.

A-League must be on guard against match fixing

You do know there was a carpark brawl as fans left Oly Park after that 5-0 rout of SydFC?? A handful of MV supporters and a handful of Syd supporters?

Have seen too many carpark brawls after sporting events. It is unaceptable at all of them. VFL, AFL, NSL, HAL. Unfortunately it happens in all these games, and it is embarassingly naïve to assume it doesn’t.

How to reduce crowd problems in football

Great article, Michael.

The zealots from both sides of these arguments do themselves (and their sports to a lesser degree) a great disservice. Playing the vicitm, or claiming to be hollier than thou, does nothing to help our games.

Your code wars are stupid and you should feel stupid

South played a home against against Melbourne Knights there. Before someone catches me on a technicality, Docklands was “Colonial Stadium” back in those days.

How to reduce crowd problems in football

Never? I was a season ticket holder in season 1 and saw plenty of incidents at Olympic Park. One was very serious at the South End when police were even using batons on supporters. Mostly the incidents didn’t warrant the frothing at the mouth we get from talk radio, but violent incidents nonetheless.
In season 2, with that fantastic 50k crowd at docklands vs SydFC, there was a serious ruckus that drew the police attention and action.

We need to take off the blinkers, if we want to be serious. Our game is meant to be more cultured, and more mature than the local games. Hiding in denial does it a disservice.

How to reduce crowd problems in football

CCTV works great, but action needs to be swift and visible to deter future incidents.
An incident is spotted on screen, securtiy step in and remove the offender immediately. The innocent active supporters then need to allow the security to do their job. Currently these innocents go out of their way to obstruct security and protect these tools.

A-League fans, don’t give the media an excuse
