AFL Easter Monday Microscope: Umpire dissent, booing premiership heroes and another Cats-Hawks classic

The horrendous reality is dawning upon Don that the Hawks are more likely to win another premiership before Freo win their first. 😁

In your wild dreams, Don.

Bottom 4? I don’t think so.

I love watching Jai Newcombe. He looks more like a heavy metal band roadie than a footy player but he tackles hard and runs all day. Has some ball skills too, as his excellent set shot goal from the sideline showed. The new Robert “Dipper” Di Pierdomenico?

AFL Saturday Study: Unpacking ultimate Power failure, time for taggers to return as stars wreak havoc

So he’s only resigning because it has become public? It was lewd and tasteless but it happened 4 years ago, was investigated and found not to be in breach of standards. This is a massive over-reaction. Clearly the social and MS media pile on would be too much for him personally and for CA, and that’s the reason he’s resigned. I’m so over this.

'Deeply sorry for the hurt and pain': Tearful Tim Paine resigns as Test captain over sexting scandal

Jak, observing how quickly identity politics dominates discussion and stifles debate on just about every issue these days, I’m convinced that in cases like this, it’s much better to persuade people and let them make their own choice, than to mandate it. The reality is that a lot of people will get their back up if told they must behave or speak a certain way, and once in their bunker, it’s impossible to move them. Condemning them will never change their minds. In this instance, I think team management would have been better off saying they fully support, even encourage, players to take a knee as show of support for the elimination of racism in sport, but acknowledge that it is an individual decision to do so. Maybe de Kock would still have declined, but at least there would be a chance, over time, that he and others would see that it is important. Play the long game, in other words.

South African skipper addresses Quinton de Kock's controversial withdrawal from T20 World Cup game

If I was a player for SA I would take a knee, but the problem with imposing it on players is that it becomes more about the rights of individuals than about making a stand against racism. So it defeats the purpose of the gesture, which is a shame. It sounds like it was poorly handled by the SA team management, but kudos to Bavuma for his thoughtful comments.

I still think they’re better placed to do it. If not, the video ref

Errors just kill you: Talking points from South Sydney’s rout of Manly

Why isn’t it the responsibility of touchies or the video ref to stop play for injuries? The on-field ref has enough to deal with already.

Brian Lake won the Norm in 2013. Probably the most recent defender to win it.

Five questions ahead of the 2021 AFL grand final

Agree with that, Kent. If anything you’re being a bit lenient. I’d be happy with a suspension after the 2nd clear offence.

And you’ve gotta love Nigel Owens!

Gamesmanship, grace, humility and did the Eels get hosed? Talking points from NRL finals Week 2

That’s the only reason I’m backing the Panthers. I reckon they are the only team capable of stopping the Storm. Souths on their day, maybe, but I reckon they will implode if they make the GF. The others are either too banged up or just not at that level.

Only if they lose!

NRL semi-finals: When fibros play fibros who’s left to hate?

I get it. Manly are the evil empire after they repeatedly pillaged my beloved Bears over the years. I always thought I would sooner dive into a pool of hot oil than back them in a game. Any game. But then comes along Tom Trbojevic. Not just a sensational player to watch on the field, but seemingly a great bloke off it as well. And the Roosters have always oozed arrogant privilege. With their Hollywood beach location, hatted restaurants, marinas and V’Landys-given right to pick whichever player they want, they’re an easy team to hate. But this year? They’ve been smacked with injuries that should have seen them tumble down the ladder, yet still managed to stay alive in the 2nd week of finals. Hats off, Steggles!

Heads Manly, Tails Roosters. Manly it is.

I like the idea of Sicily as captain, Dean. There’s a bit of Hodge in him. A fair slice of mongrel and someone who likes to play on the edge. Once he works out when to pull back, I reckon he could be a great on field leader.

Hawthorn season review: A remarkable reverse tank

Maybe I’ve just got brown and gold glasses on, and I’m not denying the process was messy, but I honestly did not perceive any bitterness from Clarko in leaving. I think he really is burned out and is looking forward to a year out of the game. He finished on a bit of a high note with their performance in the last 5 or so games.

Love the irony, Peter!

I get how it happened, but the reality is that he sounds terrible and sometimes difficult to understand. He would be better off in a coaching/mentoring role.

The good, the bad and the Blocker: who are the best and worst of NRL's TV callers?

Gus is great comedic value at times. Comments like “Get that into ya” and “he’s the fastest man on the planet” are always good for a laugh. The rest of the time I wished he would just shut up.

The good, the bad and the Blocker: who are the best and worst of NRL's TV callers?

Yep, just as ex-players need to be accredited to coach, some media training should also be mandatory before they are given a mic. In general, the set up that works best is a combination of professional commentator, such as Rabs, who does the bulk of the calling, and an ex-player who chimes in occasionally with specific observations. Sterling and Joey do a good job in the latter role. Some, like Lockyer, have useful insights, but have voices like a busted chainsaw that render them unlistenable.

The situation at the moment is that the new Taliban regime, desperate for legitimacy and foreign investment, are making noises about being more tolerant, respectful of rights, etc. And yet they have now banned women’s sport. If the ICC and others just shrug their shoulders and accept this, it is a clear signal that they can get away with it. They may have won the war and control of the country, but they need engagement with others. Now is the time to be very firm with them.

Afghanistan captain hits back at Paine

The reality is that politics and sport do mix, unfortunately. The Taliban have seemingly forbidden women from playing cricket, which is contrary to the ICC value of “Respect for Diversity”. I hope the ICC, CA, and other bodies take a firm stand on this.

Afghanistan captain hits back at Paine

It’s harsh, but true, Brian. If you asked Dangerfield if he would swap all the finals he has played in with Geelong for one flag, I reckon I know what his answer would be.

'How long can this go on?': Talking points from yet another Geelong finals failure

We’ve got a long way to go to match the standard we saw from Melbourne last night, and I’m nervous about the coach transition, but there are good signs in the young players and the way the Hawks finished the season.
