Does Tex have permission to wear sunglasses this week? 😁

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 6

No team playing at home. Nick Kyrgios becoming the voice of reason in men’s tennis. We truly are living in strange times.

If he was genuine, he would voluntarily go to a facility for disabled people and apologise face-to-face, then spend a day working with them. No cameras or media. That would be step one of redemption.

Disparaging, ignorant, offensive: Why Addin Fonua-Blake's behaviour warranted more than two weeks

Yeah, giving the ref a spray is bad enough, but what makes this totally unacceptable is the words he used. With all the awareness surrounding these issues these days, I’m stunned that a professional player could, even in a pressure moment, think it is OK to say it, then virtually repeat them minutes later.

Disparaging, ignorant, offensive: Why Addin Fonua-Blake's behaviour warranted more than two weeks

Not sure if “role model” is the right term, but professional players can definitely influence the behavior of young fans, and that’s why Fonua-Blake’s offensive language must be strongly condemned, and an appropriate punishment given. I really don’t think 2 weeks is enough, given that a) he repeated the offense when leaving the field and b) he has already caused the NRL trouble this year with his behavior and ridiculous stance regarding vaccination. Hasler and V’Landys needs to pull him aside and let him know very clearly that he is out of line, and put him on notice.

V’Landy’s words were strong but let’s see if the commission’s actions match them. This bloke has already caused problems this season, he needs a month suspension at least.

Fonua-Blake apologises for ref spray

I reckon the die-hard traditionalists in AFL HQ will want to keep it at the MCG, regardless of crowds. “Thin edge of the wedge” and that sort of thing. Hopefully not, but if they did go down that path it would be a petty move and a missed opportunity to advance the league to being truly national.

An MCG grand final probably can't happen - but where else works?

Playing it in an empty MCG would be the worst option, and a statement on how stubborn the AFL are on this. With many suitable alternatives that can host a crowd, it would damage the game’s credibility.

An MCG grand final probably can't happen - but where else works?

The MCG is a wonderful, iconic venue but it being the permanent host of the GF is one of the remaining obstacles to the game becoming truly national. With so many other rules thrown out the window, this disrupted season presents a great opportunity for the AFL to rip the bandage off and move the GF somewhere else. The actual venue matters less than the fact that it is not in Victoria, as a symbol of the game’s maturity. I get the argument about ANZ Stadium being the next biggest venue, with less complications, but it’s a soulless mausoleum (I live in Sydney and have watched many games there). Give it to Perth, I reckon.

An MCG grand final probably can't happen - but where else works?

I didn’t know the super bowl had a two week build up. I guess it works for them but I reckon it would be a momentum killer, like the rest week between H&A and finals.

You must really hate AFL, Barry!

The NRL is torching the Frankenstein AFL

True, the number of goals/tries is irrelevant. If it was, the entire world would be watching nothing but basketball, which includes about 100 baskets per game. I still can’t get into it, though.

The NRL is torching the Frankenstein AFL

That post contained way too much sense and balance, Rory. Please get into the spirit and re-write it with loads of selective stats, invalid assumptions, baseless opinions and rants against one code or another.

The NRL is torching the Frankenstein AFL

Any game involving the Broncos these days is rubbish. And isn’t that fantastic?!!

That was a good laugh, DL, esp the bit about the All Blacks wanting to play league!

“Short chip, mark, sideways chip, mark, backwards chip, mark. This is what the game has become” That’s not what I’m seeing. If anything the contests themselves are the problem. So many players around the ruck that there’s little chance of the ball coming out if the umpire doesn’t blow a free kick.

I’d be OK with a Lions premiership (can’t see our Hawks lifting their consistency enough to get there this year). They’ve been thereabouts for a couple of years and it would be good for the game if a QLD team won it again. Their beloved league team are a sad rabble at the moment, so we should take pity.

You could do worse than Cotric on the wing.

Izzy Folau? Yeah, nah!

A cross-code All Blacks vs Kangaroos match could happen this year

Maybe there’s a Rebel store in the Mall? 😊

A cross-code All Blacks vs Kangaroos match could happen this year

That’s the key point, isn’t it? If there’s any sort of contest allowed at the breakdown, the league boys will be all at sea unless they’ve played union before (which some have). There will be so many infringements it will be farcical.

At least there’s probably something we can all agree on – the trophy name. The Brad Thorn Cup, named after the only man to have played for both teams, as far as I know.

Teddy can definitely make something out of nothing. Ditto Kalyn Ponga. JAC more of a finisher with his speed.
