True, Paul. When he listed gays he drew the enthusiastic support of the Christian right. But bushfire victims are another category entirely, even though neither chose their circumstance. It was kind of funny, and not a little ironic, watching Alan Jones backpedal furiously after the bushfire comments

Totally, gibbon. There’s may be an element of hereditary in alcoholism but also a dose of choice. Being gay is not a choice.

Lol! Only if 22 red cards were issued

I’m not offended, Ralph but the person in question certainly would be by the suggestion that he has chosen to be the way he is. It’s clear that you cannot accept this (as I will never accept the “choice” argument), but I would caution you against expressing that opinion to anyone struggling to accept their sexuality. It reinforces the guilt that they probably already feel, and could have terrible consequences.

I’ll clarify that by saying that it relates to anything that someone in Folau’s position says or does in public. Of course conversations he has over the dinner table with his wife are private, but social media is a very public forum.

As are you. But my position on this is not just “feelings”. It is lived experience.

Fine, not “facts” if you prefer. It’s utterly irrelvent IMO. My point is that it is not a choice. Of that I am certain.

It’s a difficult decision for a captain, but the principle must always be team first, i.e don’t compromise the chance of victory. Given the chance of rain, it was the right call.

I guess one thing Paine could have done was send a runner out to Warner and say “we will declare at some score or time, if you want to go for it”

I read Tubby Taylor wants to reduce tests to 4 days, which would make it harder if this was adopted.

They are intensely personal, Ralph, so no, I won’t go further. This person, like so many, has endured trauma, self-doubt, and been in some very dark places that make it inconceivable to suggest it was some sort of choice. I think it is irrelevant whether it’s a direct result of genetics or you call it “behaviour”, what I am certain of is that for some, it is not something they choose to be.

But I don’t see it as a set of rules at all. To do so would be confusing at best, and likely to land you in gaol if you followed some of them! However, there are many valuable and timeless lessons, principles etc to be found.

As for genetics, there is more than DNA to who we are. From the lived experience of someone very close to me, I know for an absolute fact that sexuality is not a choice this person made.

Care to elaborate, Glenn?

I was taught by the Jesuits to look for the good in all people, challenge orthodoxy and listen to all sides before forming an opinion. So my final take on Folau is that he seems to be a fundamentally good person, but is deeply misguided.
You don’t have to be a biblical scholar to know that there are all sorts of bizarre rules and customs in the good book that are completely unacceptable, even illegal, in today’s more enlightened society. Yet a section of Christianity has chosen to obsess about sexuality and selectively latch onto references to justify the vilification of a group of people for simply being who they are and expressing their love accordingly.
Folau, through the influence of his father it seems, finds himself in this sect and is unlikely to ever change his opinion, even as it becomes increasingly marginalised. I have a degree of sympathy for him but am glad he has left the game for all the angst and distraction he brought.

The problem with the last bit is you can’t draw a clear line between workplace and private place when you are someone as high profile as IF. It’s one of the reasons he was paid so much – to be the public face of rugby, rle model, etc, and in a sense he never clocks off.

The way things are going around the world these days, old Bill may get his wish. NATO, UN, all set up to preserve peace, are fraying at the edges, some may say irreversibly disintegrating. Oh well, at least the youth who survive will be “sorted out”.

True. I think Willis was a bit peeved at all the accolades for that famous win going to Botham, hence the hilarious “golden bollocks” name.

As an experienced senior member of the team, and former captain, Smith is entitled to give his opinion on on-field decisions, just as I’m sure Warner and others do. It’s others in the media who are pushing for Smith’s reinstatement who should put a sock in it.

Good question. After his latest unhinged references to bushfires being divine retribution, I imagine a few donors would have been regretting their contributions anyway.

I get that, but the vast majority of qualified experts agree that the GBR is in trouble, and that is largely caused by ocean warming leading to bleaching to levels that are irreparable. It’s not the “left” media at all, it’s mainstream scientists. You can always find an “expert” to validate your opinion, but this person is very much in the minority.
