Long time Collingwood tragic craving success

Published

Comments

It’s staggering to believe that this delusional fool was President of the Collingwood football club for 23 years.

Eddie McGuire accuses the media of trying to 'get Collingwood'

A brief but incise piece Cameron.

One minor stat you missed – Nathan Buckley has the lowest winning percentage of any Collingwood coach in history who has coached 100 games or more…

Too much of the narrative around keeping him is either about being one kick from winning a Grand Final in 2018 – when Justin Longmuir, Garry Hocking and Matthew Boyd clearly had significant influence – or that there might not be anyone better available.

There are any number of assistants who have had a number of years of years under good coaches, and a couple – Bassett and Schofield – who have also coached their own teams to a Premiership.

They are obviously untried as senior AFL coaches, but so too were Clarkson and Hardwick, and they turned out okay.

Sorry Nathan Buckley, but it's over

Clearly Les, the club have been overpaying mid-range players and then consequently back ending high contracts like Treloar to fit them in.

Cox – $200,000 player tops, but reports it may be $350-500,000
Phillips – another $250,000 player, reportedly was on similar to Cox
Mayne – $500,000 contract for a $200,000 player.
Stephenson – reports of up to $600,00? He’s $350,000 or so. Greenwood $400,000 original four year contract. Wells $500,000 a year for three.

Beams, Adams and Sidebottom on circa $500,000. Elliott is on around that too. Howe would be on $400,00 or thereabouts you would think. Crisp and Maynard $300 or so. I believe Mihocek is on around $300-350,000, but DeGoey should be topping his wages up by another $300,000 out of his own.

Moore, DeGoey and Pendlebury on $800,000 plus. Grundy on $1 million.

Richmond have Lynch and Martin on $1million. Cotchin and Riewoldt must be on $700,000 plus, Prestia $600,000. Rance would have been on Riewoldt money too.

But who else at Richmond are going to be on $500,000 plus? Maybe Vlaustin and Grimes, but Richmond have a well paid top end, maybe one or two in the middle, and then the rest solid $250,000 type players. It’s a testament to how good a coach Caracella was in changing their system, as compared to ours, that they have been so successful. Their system makes even the bottom rung players look good.

Let’s face it, if Collingwood recruited Mabior Chol, he would be on $550,000…

The ex-President surely has a role to play in this with the culture of a complete lack of accountability he set.

The fact that our President is someone who allowed that culture to fester for 14 years doesn’t exactly fill me with hope for the future.

Collingwood's salary cap mystery

This comment from the CFC post on Facebook pretty much sums up why the club is forever mired in mediocrity:

“Mediocrity ? They missed a Premiership by a kick 2 years ago and have been there and abouts the last 2 years. We beat Richmond in a final to deny them 4 straight, so I think our best is right up there. Injuries didnt help this season.”

And there it is.

Hollow Collingwood celebrations show where we truly stand

Collingwood need a lot more than a better run of injuries to contend.

The list is all over the place – a handful of top players with a year or two left, a larger number in their late-mid 20s, and a large group of young/developing players. Much of the trading has been to top up rather than accept reality of where the club is at.

Injuries happen every year, so there is something more to it than bad luck.

The 2018 game plan has been seen only once since then, and what a surprise, it won the game. Otherwise the stodgy, backwards/sideways chipping game plays right into the opposition’s hands, and there is a distinct lack of physicality about the team.

The midfield is woeful, despite spending big bucks, and there is a distinct lack of connection between Grundy and the mids, and between the mids and forwards.

And let’s not go into how abysmal the forward structure is. Suffice to say the forwards coach would be better off concentrating on his drop volley.

Five talking points from the AFL semi-finals

Hard to disagree with this really.

2018 was built on Cox, Degoey, Hoskin-elliott and Thomas having seasons they have never had before – or since – and Stephenson and Mihocek having great debut seasons – which they haven’t repeated since either.

Collingwood's broken system is doomed to fail

Brilliant work Les.

Spot on in every aspect.

Collingwood's broken system is doomed to fail

Solomon would be a great get if he brings the same hardness he had as a player, but there is no way Buckley will give up his tennis partner Sanderson and other best mate in Harvey.

The ball is now in Geoff Walsh’s court, so to speak.

Grundy is a seven-year albatross hanging around Collingwood’s neck

Grundy is clearly injured in some way, but it doesn’t negate the fact that the basic premise is correct.

For all of his dominance in the areas Peter the Scribe mentions, he hasn’t been a reliable mark around the ground like the great rucks usually are, isn’t much of a goal kicker, has poor timing with his centre bounce jumps, and perhaps commensurate with Buckley’s silly game plan, handballs far too often.

He’ll be better next year, but his deal is still ridiculous.

Grundy is a seven-year albatross hanging around Collingwood’s neck

A pity Nathan Buckley doesn’t look in the mirror as often as he used too.

Pies face tough task in AFL finals

Agree. It’s a brilliant and brilliantly scathing, yet truthful, piece of work.

Exceptional.

GWS are broken in every way

Great work, Les.

I dislike the way so many point to 2018 as an example of how good we were, when it was largely built on incredible debut seasons from Mihocek and Stephenson and never before seen or since seasons from Hoskin-Elliott, Thomas, Degoey and Cox.

Fairy tales don't happen at Collingwood, they need miracles

Thank you, Spruce Moose.

Most coaches win a Premiership in their 4th to 6th years. That’s been a truism the last 70 years.

2020 must be Nathan Buckley's last year as Collingwood coach

Five points short after being 29 points up at the 22 minute mark of the first quarter. And still lost. Didn’t make it last year, despite just about everything that could go wrong for GWS before the game go wrong.
As I said, this is nine years in. History suggests if Nathan Buckley doesn’t coach the club to a win this year, he won’t.

2020 must be Nathan Buckley's last year as Collingwood coach

Therein lies the problem Peter. The Collingwood football club should not be thinking that 15 other coaches would take that performance – they should be thinking there’s only one winner and we want it to be us.

The final against Geelong last year was an average effort – failed to score in the third quarter, added 14 points to the to the total in the last, and squeaked over the line. The Preliminary final was an atrocity. I fail to see how any genuine Collingwood supporter could be anything but angry with the result.

2020 must be Nathan Buckley's last year as Collingwood coach

Point being, Peter, that Richmond have won two Premierships and the ‘Pies haven’t. They have just had the poor games.

I’m not sure why any coach should get a free pass this year. Someone still has to stand on the podium next to the Captain on Grand Final day. Collingwood are either one of five or six clubs that have a genuine shot at the Premiership, or they are not.

If it was Buckley’s 5/6th year you might have a point, but this is his ninth year in charge, and, barring the close but no cigar moment of 2018, he hasn’t looked like getting there again.

2020 must be Nathan Buckley's last year as Collingwood coach

As I said, a lot of the issues with the team have been ongoing for a while. There have been a lot of poor games from the ‘Pies the last few seasons, and few really good ones.
I believe the central premise is accurate – this list is much closer to the end of its Premiership window, and no coach has won a Premiership after nine years in charge without success.
Doesn’t mean it can’t happen, but it makes it highly unlikely.

2020 must be Nathan Buckley's last year as Collingwood coach

Thanks for the comment Darwin Dee, I appreciate it.

2020 must be Nathan Buckley's last year as Collingwood coach

The club exist to win Premierships, not to accumulate top four finishes.

Collingwood's long night continues

You conveniently left out the fact that two of the three coaches who were in the Collingwood coaching box in 2018 are no longer there, and that the team haven’t played anywhere near that level since.
The Preliminary final last year was a dreadful game, but, given how bad the games against North and Hawthorn were, it’s hard to know if it was the worst performance of the year or just one of the three most rancid.

Collingwood's long night continues

Hate to have to burst your paranoia bubble, Peter The Scribe, but I am a Collingwood supporter through and through.

And yes – hard to remember, off the top of my head, such an excruciatingly nauseous performance since the 1980 Grand Final (and I was there, so I have an idea).

Everything that could possibly go wrong for GWS went wrong, and yet we came out and played like an Under 15s netball team hopped up on Harry’s leftover mushroom stash.

Trying to defend it just makes you look silly.

What happened to Collingwood's firepower?

2012 the team was on Malthouse auto-pilot. 2013? It was an abysmal performance, and we were deservedly bundled straight out. And seriously, 2019? The Preliminary final was one of the worst performances I’ve seen in forty years.

What happened to Collingwood's firepower?

A sound analysis. The list is in no man’s land at the moment. Not good enough to be a credible challenge, with a dearth of experience set to finish this year or next, and the younger brigade still needing much work.

Reef McInnes and Nick Daicos will help with the class factor, and Kelly and Murphy have either yet to be seen or seen very little. Sier hasn’t followed up on his late 2018 promise, and the Brown Brothers need at least two years’ serious gum work.

The real danger is that Nathan Buckley will continue to be gifted unwarranted contract extensions, when his coaching frailties are there for all to see, if they care to look.

Just how good is Collingwood? Part 2

Great series of articles Les.

Collingwood supporters exasperate me. I am a Pies supporter and have been for almost fifty years, but the litany of excuses offered up by the likes of Peter the Scribe do my head in.

Whilst it would have been nice to have had Moore or Elliott in 2018, we didn’t, still made the Grand Final, were five goals up near the close of he first quarter and lost the game. The Eagles had just as many vital outs and won.

Just like the Preliminary final last year, when we had everything going right, GWS had everything going wrong, and they poleaxed us.

Saying that McGuire brings in sponsorship money is redundant. Since he is the President, we have no idea whether someone else would bring in more money than he does. It’s entirely possible, given how polarising he is.

Richmond may have had a largely unsuccessful period from 1982, but they won two flags in the 60s, two in the 70s and 1980, plus two recently – that’s seven flags in fifty years, compared to our two.

This is Buckley’s 9th year in charge. He still has one year left on a contract. Let’s assume we don’t win this year or next – that will be ten years in charge without a flag. Any normally run club wouldn’t have made it this far, but you can bet McGuire will be pulling every string he has to get Buckley another extension, probably using this year as yet another excuse.

It’s not good enough.
