This is the exact point I was trying to get across – it worked better when it was simple: greats of the game playing a game for a great cause. Sometimes less is more. 😊
The EJ Whitten game makes a mockery of a legend
Love the idea of an AFLW SOO. Probably one of the best suggestions I’ve heard in a long time
The EJ Whitten game makes a mockery of a legend
Hi Maxine,
Totally respect your opinion but would appreciate if you could respect mine. As Macca outlined – I really enjoy the game but believe the addition of comedians, AFLX format and a soccer stadium has ruined it. If you have an issue with “a really small website having a whine” I suggest you log off. I know there are people who will disagree with my opinions and vise versa but they can still be respected instead of rudely shut down. Thanks.
The EJ Whitten game makes a mockery of a legend
There’s a difference between having fun and making a mockery out of something that was introduced as a way to honour one of the game’s greats. It just needs some simplicity. Two teams of AFL ‘legends’ playing a game of footy. No scripts, no comedians for the sake of it, no AFLX and no AAMI Park. That’s how it was up until about five years ago and it clearly appealed to the AFL community as it drew crowds of mid to high 20,000.
The EJ Whitten game makes a mockery of a legend
He’s a radio DJ on Fox FM. Ironically, the funniest part of the game was his missed attempt at goal.
The EJ Whitten game makes a mockery of a legend
100000% accurate. I don’t like how much I agreed with the article JE. Truth hurts. I just want our kids to demand a spot in the senior side. I suspect, now that Brad Scott has moved on, there will be more of an opportunity to do so. Cam Zurhaar is a great example of someone who demanded more game time through consistently good performances in the VFL. Likewise Nick Larkey.
PS. Jasper Pittard is the best. What a pick up.
North Melbourne must fix dud drafting to end the mid-table madness
Very kind words, thanks mate. Love what the Lions are building.
Thriving culture the key to clubs’ success
Don’t see the point in rushing into any decision. I’m really enjoying what Shaw has done with the side both on and off field – playing a hard and unforgiving brand of football and there is a great buzz and feel about the club generally speaking.. everyone seems to be really enjoying themselves. But IMO Shaw still needs the final seven games to prove he is the right fit for the next coach – why make the decision this second and have it backfire. Love what we’ve seen from the last five weeks but there’s still a way to go.
Shaw deserves the chance to coach North permanently
The article wasn’t actually about Richmond being contenders for the premiership, even though that isn’t entirely out of the realm of possibility. It’s about how injuries have forced them to find depth through fast-tracking kids development and their middle tier players stepping up will better place them for longer term success – rather than winning one flag (2017) and falling off the agenda for the next 20 odd years.
Richmond's 2019 season may be their best yet
Club had a very attacking game style in 2018 and it worked well for them.. don’t know why they reverted to a keepings off style at the start of this year. It has returned again in the previous 3-4 weeks, though. Had they kicked straight against Geelong, they probably would’ve won. As for identity, it’s not in Tasmania – a team in Tasmania will only succeed if it has it’s own identity that locals can resonate. Simply “rebranding” NM (or any team for that matter) as a Tasmanian team isn’t going to work because it won’t give Tasmanian’s a sense of ownership. Club do have a rediscover its identity.
Dear North Melbourne
Thanks so much. Wasn’t suggesting they would win all remaining games in Tassie, was stating that as they’ve lost the first one, they can only win a maximum of three (which is the same amount they played in 2018 and won all three down there last year) and therefore the decision has already backfired, for 2019 anyway. Apologies if I didn’t make that clear enough and thank you for reading!
Dear North Melbourne
Dislike the talk but not alarmed. I think Thompson will be looking at retirement at the end of the year, otherwise I can’t see any of the others leaving. The backline is the biggest issue and we desperately need to develop his replacement. Yes, Majak will hopefully return but his athleticism and ruck ability gives him an extra dimension as opposed to the other two talls. If poor EVW could get his body right, he’d be my first pick. Durdin looked superb a fortnight ago. Unsure where we go with McKay, still needs development imo.
Brown, Higgins (which I think was the most ridiculous suggestion of the lot, btw) and Cunnington best three players so club wouldn’t want to see them go.
Also lots of high draft picks doesn’t necessarily equal success. As you mentioned, Carlton and Essendon and further to that, Suns and GWS (who, while a good side are yet to win a flag). The real solution is play the quality kids we have. Can’t play them all at once but give them a run.
Dear North Melbourne
Hey Michael, really appreciate the feedback and the time taken to comment. The thing with North Melbourne (and potentially St Kilda and Western Bulldogs in the Vic market) is that they have never been and will never be a club fulled by money simply because they have very little of it in comparison to a Collingwood, Richmond, Essendon etc. So, as both Kingy and I pointed out, it’s often driven the club where money can’t. 2007 is the perfect example of that, with the club in incredibly poor form off the field but a booming success on field (finished 4th, made a prelim). Club was lead by the likes of Glenn Archer, Adam Simpson, Shannon Grant, Boomer and so on. While the off field position is now very strong, it’s still nothing compared to the likes of those mentioned previously so they still need that strong identity as a driving factor despite a changing AFL landscape.
Dear North Melbourne
There are many levels to the “issues” at North Melbourne and the finger can’t really be blamed at one person (ie. Brad Scott) because everyone loves the coach when they’re winning !
Outrage is ruining our game
I am not part of any North supporter groups on Facebook and try to churn out positive tweets about North as much as possible (and barely respond to the replies) because of the way these things are discussed and expressed. How can you engage with people who only express a view or opinion through abuse and foul language? Gets us no where
Outrage is ruining our game
Thank you 🙂 The real issue is our approach because no one thinks there is a correct opinion but their own. Social media exposes us to so many opinions and people think it’s ok to fling abuse off to someone who may hold an opinion that differs from their own. There are logical and respectful ways to break it down, yet we don’t take the right road and then refuse to take responsibility when it comes back to bite us.
I mean take “the one journalist in particular” who Luke Bevo claimed was partially responsible for Tom Boyd’s take down. He refused to put his hands up, take the blame and apologise, instead launching an attack on Bevo that his comments came from a place of personal dislike. It’s childish and weird and things like this are simply fueling the fire!
Outrage is ruining our game
People are approaching disagreement the wrong way. Maybe it comes from a place of entitlement or sheer anger.. I’m not sure. But if someone doesn’t like something or someone, they think it’s okay to abuse and complete rip shreds into someone than approach the situation tactfully and respectfully. You can learn so much from having a discussion with someone who doesn’t agree with you. As someone who receives abuse constantly from other twitter users I often find myself taking extended breaks from the platform at a time… it’s sad that I’m not alone in that!
Outrage is ruining our game
Thank you for the kind words, George. Footy was one a safe space for everyone to go and enjoy… if we can take responsibility for our own actions, both in person and online, we are a step closer to making the country a better place! Shouldn’t underestimate the power of AFL in our country and the power of an individual’s actions to make it a better or worse experience
Outrage is ruining our game
Yeah, it’s a tough one AM. I think they’re good enough to make a big impact in finals this year but we say that pretty much every year, don’t we. If they are good enough, which I think they are, the penny will drop for them at the right time but I guess it’s just a waiting game really. Biggest worry for me re: Giants is they rock up to the MCG playing in front of 75k-80k opposition fans. That’d really stump them
The attitude problem AFL clubs need to shake
Thank you very much!
A week for remembering Danny Frawley
