Absolutely agree, if only they accepted the bits about playing spin bowling correctly (which isn’t Borders advice, it’s the advice).Or do you not agree with playing straight, using your feet etc?

Aussies like a one-armed man punching the breeze in India but they CAN fight back … next time they play at home

Righto mate, way to avoid answering the question.

Aussies like a one-armed man punching the breeze in India but they CAN fight back … next time they play at home

I think you might have missed the point mate.

No problem at all with the coach taking a backseat and letting the players do their own thing… when the players are performing. However, if it’s become clear that the players are unable to get the job done, and there are obviously major issues with performance, why is it so unreasonable to expect the coach to step up and provide some direction? What’s the other option, shrug our shoulders and hope that things sort themselves out? How is that OK?

So not playing across the line on low and slow pitches is irrelevant theses days is it? How about using your feet and getting to the pitch? Irrelevant in the modern game as well? Because that’s what Border and Hayden were talking about. The Indian batsmen certainly thought they were still relevant from the way they batted, and they won. Funny that.

Just offering an opinion on whether you think it’s a good idea or not would be a start. You are the coach after all.

Aussies like a one-armed man punching the breeze in India but they CAN fight back … next time they play at home

Hold on, India haven’t won the first two tests because they’ve employed some sort revolutionary ‘modern’ techniques that weren’t around in Borders day. They’ve won the same way teams have for the last 100 years. And Australia lost by making the same mistakes against spin bowling that losing teams have for the last 100 years. If Smith has so much more experience than Border, why did he get out playing across the line on a low slow pitch? Any junior coach can tell you that’s a bad idea.

Fair enough he didn’t reject the offer but he certainly didn’t exactly accept it did he? It wasn’t ‘Hayden has a great record in this country so I think our batsmen would benefit from speaking with him’. Instead it’s ‘If the players want to…’. Totally non-commital, offering no opinion of his own, leaving the decision up to someone else. Great leadership. For goodness sakes, your team is being embarrassed, leaving everything up to the players is obviously not working, they are in desperate need of some direction, it’s your job to provide that direction and you won’t even give an opinion on whether Hayden should be called in.

What he meant is show that you’re out there to compete, you understand it’s a test match and not a park cricket where you give bowlers the thumbs up when they beat you. Who said anything about ‘capitulating’? How about something along the lines of ‘we’ve been clearly outplayed here so we need to have a think about how we approach things.’ What is so incomprehensible about that? You’re right, no one knows what’s being said behaving closed doors, but McDonalds petulant rejection of Hayden’s offer of assistance gives you a pretty good insight into the general attitude of the coaching panel at least.

What we are seeing is nothing new, I’m sure you could have written the same piece in the early-mid 80s re the mighty WI teams, and we managed to dig ourselves out of that. When you are as outmatched as the Australian’s were then and are now it’s not so much the technical aspects of playing a cover drive but more the basics of how you go about it, compete etc. At least back then we realised that we needed all the help we could get. The difference with the current team/coaches is they think they know it all so instead of taking on board the well-meaning advice of people like AB, who’s been there and done it, they get all defensive and reject it out of hand. Like a bunch of insecure teenagers they just seem to be unable to cope with any feedback which is even slightly critical, and that’s not a good recipe for digging yourself out of anything.

I think most reasonable people understand that inexperience is ok, as long as you are willing to learn. When it’s combined with an arrogant, ‘we already know it all’ attitude, that’s when people start getting annoyed, and that’s what we’re seeing now. McDonalds passive aggressive dismissal of Hayden’s offer of assistance, in the midst of the train wreck, being just the latest example.

Lack of experience in three key roles hurting Aussies but no excuse for Delhi rout compared with England’s Bazball revival

Great news! Just what the Australian camp are missing, some experience. I’m sure McDonald and co will put aside any personal animosity, just as Hayden had done, and welcome him into the camp with open arms because that’s what’s best for the team and Australian cricket. I mean, it’s not as if he would be so arrogant, petty, self centred and unprofessional that he would put his personal feelings ahead of what’s best for the team? Has anyone heard when Haydos will be heading down to training?

'Plans certainly weren't wrong': Batting coach defends Aussies as sweeping giant Hayden offers to lend a hand

Agreed, but what happens if your only choices are from a group who don’t like it when people say mean words because they might not be their friend any more?

Where to now for Aussies as 4-0 drubbing looms large: How they can avoid 'sweep' to make world Test final

Yep agree 100%, but what happens if they’re unable/incapable? Which is what happened in Delhi.

Where to now for Aussies as 4-0 drubbing looms large: How they can avoid 'sweep' to make world Test final

I agree to a point but when teams are in free fall, and that all pervading sense of doom has crept into the dressing room, you need someone to provide a circuit breaker. Players are only human and will tend to freeze/panic/do exactly what did in Delhi so you need someone to snap the players out of it and challenge them, appeal to their pride in their personal performance, refocus on the basics, and if necessary fire them up! ‘What are you going to do about it!’ Whether that comes from the coach or manager or whoever is irrelevant, but if nothing changes then nothing changes and the game is gone. There’s no guarantee that it will work but sure beats the hell out of just sitting there and watching the slow motion train wreck unfold, which is exactly what happened. My concern is that there is no one in the current setup who is prepared to do that so when situations like this occur, we’ve got no hope.

Where to now for Aussies as 4-0 drubbing looms large: How they can avoid 'sweep' to make world Test final

According to McDonald there wasn’t a team game plan, which begs the question of what McDonald actually contributes apart from massaging egos. As far as what was being said, my guess is nothing. The coaching staff are scared to confront/challenge the players and so they just keep their head down and hope for the best. Why do players feel they can ignore plans? Because they run the show.

Fair enough Jeff but that doesn’t explain why they went away from the 2017 approach with the 10 day camp in Dubai and then 9 days on the ground in India before the first test. The reality is CA chose to prioritise the Big Bash, and the results are clear to see.

By intelligence I’m assuming you’re talking about being smart enough to adjust to the conditions as they develop, use your feet, play straight etc? Unfortunately those are seen as old fashioned ideas. These days it’s about ‘tempo’, ‘method’ and ‘being brave’.

Just easier to say nothing and keep your job I guess.

Where to now for Aussies as 4-0 drubbing looms large: How they can avoid 'sweep' to make world Test final

So in other words… give yourself a bit of time to adjust to the conditions, like every other touring party who’s gone over there?

Anything to contribute re the actual game Barb?

FLEM’S VERDICT: Shellshocked … panicked - Aussie collapse like watching a car crash in slow motion

Yep agreed, it’s was real deer in the headlights stuff wasn’t it.

FLEM’S VERDICT: Shellshocked … panicked - Aussie collapse like watching a car crash in slow motion

Indeed, however the circumstantial evidence is overwhelmingly imho.

FLEM’S VERDICT: Shellshocked … panicked - Aussie collapse like watching a car crash in slow motion

Because the players think they know it all and the coaches are to scared to tell them any different. This is what happens when the inmates are running the asylum. It’s just easier to do nothing and lose than risk your job by challenging the players.

FLEM’S VERDICT: Shellshocked … panicked - Aussie collapse like watching a car crash in slow motion

I agree that everyone deserves their share of the blame however it’s clear that the players call the shots these days. The problem is that the coaches are too scared to challenge the players for fear of putting them off side, which is exactly what is required in these kind of situations.
