It’s got to be NCN doesn’t it? He was batting really well in his last stint and he’s definitely a front line bowler.

Lucky your one day strength is so good, given how your test squad is traveling

It was in the interview, maybe he couldn’t afford a yard anywhere near Bondi. The point was, it is often not purely a monetary decision. Facilities, coaches, mates who play there, cost of living, a successful team – any number of factors would come into a decision on where to play.

I hope so, as I said it’s worth the punt, but if they put anyone but Cotric at the back then what’s the point. He is one of the most damaging runners in the game, he need to see more ball.

NRL 2019 season preview: Canberra Raiders

How do we know Wighton will be better in defence? how long is it since he’s played a full season in the front line? I think it’s worth the punt anyway, if nothing else it will get your best player more involved – no not Wighton, but it should move Cotric to fullback.

Isn’t Wighton training at number 6? If so, Cotric or Abbey could line up at the back.

Well the first five on your list had nothing to do with Brisbane taking from the Cowboys: Miles – came to Brisbane and played for Wynnum Manly before the Broncos and Cowboys were even thought of, Dowling – same, Shearer – played for Manly before ever coming to Brisbane, Tallis – was signed by St George, not Brisbane, Renouff – pretty sure Murgon is just as close to Brisbane as Townsville,
You are right the Broncos have no right to the talent. They have to compete for it like all other teams, and the thrust of my comment is that they have done this poorly until recently. The Cowboys had a golden recruitment period 6-10 years ago, but now they are also struggling a bit to identify and keep the best players.

Frankly that’s just garbage. If there are all these conspiracy theories about this how come, not once in xxx years has it ever come out. Not one disgruntled ref, not one journalist, no one has broken any story about referee corruption since the 1963 grand final.

You can choose to make up stuff to paint yourself as the underdog, but the NRL bailed out the Knights more than once while they have never given the Broncos a cent. The NRL paid Andrew Johns outside of the salary cap when he threatened to go to rugby union, while they let the Broncos lose both Wendell Sailor and Lote Tuqiri at the same time.

You obviously don’t remember the Humphreys era, the Arko-Manly era, the Bulldogs massive property development scandal, the super league fiasco … there have been plenty of corruption in league over the years.

If it’s a choice between an organised conspiracy and sheer incompetence, you can bet 99% of the time it’s just incompetence.

I found myself making up arguments with Tim in the off season just to get by. I sent random emails to myself telling me how the Raiders are specials this year despite being at the wrong end of a massive global conspiracy. How the Broncos are actually a shadowy organisation that run the world’s banks, how Jack Wighton is a really really good player … I helps get me through those hot summer months.

I agree with your 7 day turn around comment. I was disagreeing with the notion that the Broncos somehow get a better deal with refs than any other team as a result of some sort of organised conspiracy. Here’s a tip. Every fan thinks their team are hard done by and that other teams get all the b=good ref calls, because every fan is only looking out for the call against their own team.

But what if they are not somehow $3M over the cap with no one noticing. Isn;t that more likely than a conspiracy? Considering what an absolute coup it would be for any media outlet to break the story?

I’m happy enough for Brisbane to get some favours anyway. I remember how we had to pay for every other teams travel, how we were banned from displaying our sponsors logo at our home games. How were were promised when buying the license in the first place that there would be no other SE QLD team for 10 years to help the side get started, only to have the Gold Coast announced a few weeks later. How the NRL told us to go suck eggs when we asked for help to keep Wendell Sailor and Lote Tuqiri out of rugby union, but as soon as Andrew Johns was threatened they threw buckets of non-salary cap money at him. How the rules were changed specifically to reduce Alan Langer’s effectiveness both at tackling and stealing the ball.

So I’ll take the extra TV games thanks.

I’d suggest since the summer has been basically saturated by alleged violence against women by professional footballers, then Mary has every right to say whatever the heck she wants.

People still like to bring up Melbourne’s salary cap offences years later. People complain about refs each and every day ad naseum.

Stand Jack de Belin down until his case is resolved

In the case of Norman, they know he has priors and recruited him anyway. In my view in that case they have taken the risk and must live with that decision.

Great read Ryan.

Numbers Game: Which teams will rise and fall in the AFL in 2019?

The Bronco’s recruitment over the past decade and a bit has been poor, since Cyril Connell basically. It is an indictment that the bulk of the QLD side and especially the bulk of the absolute superstars in that team have spent their stellar careers at other clubs. That Brisbane did not get a hold of even one of Slater, Smith, Cronk, JT, Ponga, Morgan, Inglis, Scott, etc is ridiculous.

So it goes to show, and this is a lesson for those Roosters haters out there, you can be the richest club since Manchester City, but if your processes are poor you still won’t get the chocolates.

Having said all of that, in the last two or three years the Broncos recruitment may have turned a corner. Which is not surprising considering who came back to coach the side.

In an interview with Matt Gillett last year he said that he knocked back a higher offer from the Roosters to stay at the Broncos when he was first starting out. The reason? In Sydney he was going to have to live in an apartment and he wanted a big yard for his pet Husky.

Sometimes it’s not about the money.

So a team has home ground advantage. I think you will find the same with most teams.

Gained Cronk, Chrichton and Tedesco, lost Pearce, Ferguson and Napa and SKD. It might not be as over the top as you think.

Great comment BA, when trying to explain how things happen in most area of life, given the choice between wrong doing and sheer incompetence, you are usually right if you choose incompetence.

Tim, it’s good to have you back. Thanks for the link to the TPA disclosures. the thing that got me there was, despite all the angst over TPA’s it amounts to 2.8% of the cap. Basically immaterial! I also noted how low the Roosters TPA’s were.

Regarding the Roosters, you noted their ability to bring in Tedesco, Crichton and Cronk, but did not point out that at the same time they have offloaded Ferguson, Pearce and Napa, plus a couple of others like Sean Kenny-Dowell. So in my opinion there really is nothing to see here (or at least not much to see).

I suspect the Storm and Cowboys TPA’s are genuinely sponsors interested in getting their hands on the absolute superstars of the game. I believe these two clubs will see their TPA’s signficantly reduce once Smith, Slater, Thurston et al are all gone.

The Broncos? Hard to dispute the advantage.
