I understand the frustration for fans having to follow this so called old fashioned crowd etiquette. My piece calls for more respect for players and to avoid the pathway of crowds unfairly distracting players while serving or barracking hard when a point is lost from a double fault.

Great piece. Holding the ball rule has seamlessly changed over the years. People saying “how did he get rid of it?” doesn’t happen these days because players can drop it if they didn’t have prior. This is meant to be holding the ball as it would have been called 10 years ago. If umpires award tacklers more, this will decrease congestion as players will have a ball in hand to kick the ball forward rather than a stoppage to try and with another contested possession is congested play.

Yes, I was lucky enough to play with Serong against Rowell. Trying to stop Rowell and Anderson was a tough task. Them and others in the side like young Nick Daicos linked up very well and were hard to stop. It’s likely that Rowell and Serong will match up in the midfield at stages throughout the game on Saturday I’d say.

Fans will be back sooner than we expect. It will change rapidly IMO. I’m no health expert but I’m sure most would agree that the MCG a quarter filled is far safer from COVID than going to the supermarket.

Correct. That and the small X factor forwards are the reasons why Collingwood needs to move the ball quicker from half back to inside 50. 2019 preliminary final last year against GWS was a prime example of that. We waited till the last quarter to start taking risks and move the ball quicker and that’s when we started dominating the game.

Thanks Peter. Cameron has been impressive in training but I like Cox and the fact he was taking marks in match simulation about a week ago convinces me even more. Dunn was great I thought in last Thursday’s hitout and with a bit more time to get his body right, he’ll push a strong case to get into the senior side. De Goey was amazing with his performance on Thursday which probably gave everyone great confidence despite him tearing up the Collingwood defence of the white team.

How the AFL can go global
Good point but if you add another Victorian or NSW team there will be more derbies so it would have to be a team from another state. Say it was Gold Coast, that clearly didn’t work when they were in the league. If you go to SA, Adelaide United only had 7,138 members last year and an average of 8,326 attendance at games. Perth had an attendance average of 8382 and 10,278. There’s a chance you could go there but it’s costly. To add a team anywhere right now is costly especially with Covid-19 and having just brought in Western United. At this stage, I wouldn’t add another team for the next 5 years at least. It also risky. Spend the money on what the league already has and try and strengthen that. One area the league should focus on is maintaining lists so they don’t change as frequently each season.

I don’t think the A-League really needs to expand now? I think its better off the way it currently is. More focus needs to be put on increasing interest in the competition rather than bringing in a new team.

In that situation you could just do a traditional coin toss if both teams aren’t playing home.

Yes, if it happened, it could spark an outburst of disappointed cricket fans but in our imagination, if more test match were closer as a result of the change I think fans and even players would prefer that over keeping the coin toss. I’d just give it a try for a bit and see how it goes.

Time to allow the touring team to chose whether they bat or bowl first in test matches. My only worry is that it may take out the fairness of the game but hey, the game would only be better for it with a greater chance of having more closer test matches, I think. Let’s at least give it a go for some time.

Nice article! You raise a brilliant point as to why professional sportspeople must find an interest and place outside of playing their sport. It is important they do this for their health and wellbeing as well as everyone’s around them.

Alex Carey is unlucky not to qualify for selection. He played in GWS’s expansion side in the TAC Cup pathway competition as a captain who also won the best and fairest. He, however, was surprisingly not picked up on the GWS list resulting in Carey going back to Adelaide to pursue a cricket career.

Correct. Good call. His first-grade debut at Melbourne Cricket Club was as a wicketkeeper at the age of 15. Pretty incredible to have achieved that. He also shared the gloves as a keeper in the under-17 Victorian state team.

Good pick up. According to the Herald Sun, Nick O’Brien is a wicketkeeper although from thoroughly researching about his cricket, he was a fast bowler. Tom Clurey is the best option in this side to take the gloves. There has been a lack of wicketkeeping options out of the AFL’s recently retired and current players. It would be good to hear if there are some wicketkeepers around.
