I don’t Eddie, the loss of Chandler and Barea is surely equivalent to losing the Jordan and Pippen (note sarcasm). The fact that Dallas played Miami, Oklahoma (probably the top two teams at the moment) and a very good Denver side while still adjusting to a new lineup, is the reason why they are off to a poor start but as long as they have Dirk and Terry they’ll still be in the playoffs.

Dallas Mavericks akin to 1998-99 Chicago Bulls

He doesn’t have a contract but the Blazers have made a qualifying offer (basically a hold teams can place on their young players), which means that if the NBA resumes he’s guaranteed a contract for at least that amount but the cancellation of the season puts that in jeopardy. While the Chinese league has officially said NBA players have to stay for the season, there has been talk that the players there will be let go anyway once the lockout ends. But you’re right It’s a tough offer to turn down with his NBA income now in jeopardy.

NBA to NBL to China, but Patty deserves our respect

Absolutely, seems like people are quick to criticise sportsmen and slow to praise. I think as fans we tend to invest our emotions in the teams we support and expect the players to do the same, without understanding that they are professionals who need to make business-minded decisions because sports are a big business now after all, and the players will just as soon be dropped once they are no longer of value anymore.

Disappointing to lose Mills but you can hardly blame him from a personal perspective, anyone else would do the same. As for his play, he certainly didn’t dominate, which is a credit to the defense in the league, as he took more shots than anyone else in the league which is why he was the leading scorer. However, he showed enough of his talent and led the Tigers to enough victories to say that he delivered the goods on the court.

Patty Mills calls time on the NBL

Fair point there’s some dead wood they need to give the chop, as you say Schammer, McPhee, Crowley etc. but what about Barlow, who should be better next season and could be a star, and Fyfe, Broughton and Mundy are already showing signs as elite players, while the likes of Lower, Mzungu, Silvagni and Hill played some good games. Sandy, McPharlin, and Pav are all still top-notch players and are a good veteran presence.

Are Fremantle the AFL's sleeping giants?

You’ve slightly missed the reasoning behind why assistant coaches from Collingwood are popular: it’s simply that they’ve been a successful team over the past few seasons. Geelong’s success has also seen there assistant coaches in demand. You’re drawing the longest bow to consider Sanderson anything but a Geelong product, and McCartney, new coach of the Bulldogs, is another, with Ken Hinkley is a candidate for the Saints job. It seems that if you want to be an AFL Head Coach then first become an assistant coach at a club that tastes a lot of success.

Collingwood pedigree irresistible to clubs

Good article. There’s definitely a lot to like about Freo’s list. Not sure if Harvey is the man for St Kilda, would prefer maybe Eade or Alan Richardson. You need someone you can trust to take them through what looms as a difficult few years ahead. Hird had Knights come before him to cop the bad seasons and bottom out.

Are Fremantle the AFL's sleeping giants?

I think this discussion just shows how passionate football and basketball supporters are about the sports they follow, probably a result of the mainstream media often excluding them to focus on AFL and League. Really it’s great to see both sports getting a boost in profile with some big signings, would love to see both these great global sports prosper here.

Snaring Andrew Bogut would top Emerton or Kewell

Um how about the parameters of being a current elite global player in one’s sport. Kewell hasn’t been elite for five years, Emerton never was.

Snaring Andrew Bogut would top Emerton or Kewell

top 50 -100????? There’s probably 50 Brazilians alone better than either of them at this stage. Kewell is definitely more famous here but perhaps that’s more to do with his work off the pitch than his achievements as a footballer over recent years.

Snaring Andrew Bogut would top Emerton or Kewell

Don’t think the football fans should take this one personally (punter etc.) not arguing soccer isn’t the biggest sport in the world hands down but basketball is the second biggest and on a playing level, Bogut is in perhaps the top 30 players in the world but let’s be honest – Kewell and Emerton may not be in the top say 1000 anymore. If Kewell had come during his Leeds/Liverpool peak then it would have been bigger. But while Kewell has a much bigger profile in Australia and his signing has been more heralded that says more about the Australian media and his own media savvy over the years than his value on the pitch now.

Snaring Andrew Bogut would top Emerton or Kewell

I’m sorry but this is complete and utter bollocks that flies in the face of all facts. In Geelong’s four prior seasons near the top of the table, the only season they had ‘momentum’ was 2008 and that momentum did them no good on GF day. In 2007, in the second last round they lost to Port at Kardinia before thrashing them in the Grand Final. In 2009, they lost to the Bulldogs in the second last round before being beaten two weeks later in the finals.

So please look up your facts and stop writing meaningless words spouting so-called conventional wisdom and making erroneous arguments. The game means nothing more to Geelong than it does to Collingwood, except in the eyes of hack journalists with nothing better to do than tap at a keyboard.

Why Geelong must win tonight's Mockbuster

Hunt is certainly the worst player who has been given the opportunity to play every game this season. The reality is that if someone played as poorly as he has they would have certainly been dropped. Not only has had goals kicked on him but he has given Gold Coast nothing in terms of attack, which is needed these days. I think the Champion Data stats are generally pretty telling and Hunt has an abominable average of 29 with a high of 44. There is no other player who has played every game who doesn’t have an average higher than his highest score. (To give you a general indication an average player might average around 70 and the best 130). Certainly we are witnessing a historically bad player only getting back in the side to justify his contract. They’re hoping to hide him in the backline and rely on the public not really noticing how bad he is and judging from a few comments, their strategy is working to some degree. I agree Folau may have a greater shot because of his size but Hunt is clearly never going to make it as an AFL player.

Is Karmichael Hunt the worst player in AFL?

Totally agree, Dalembert and Battier would be smart signings and match well with their existing players, although I don’t think Battier is quick enough to play starting SG, maybe Douglas or another 3pt shooter who can spread the floor. A couple of problems though with getting Paul, the Knicks don’t have the cap space and don’t have any draft picks that they can trade until 2018! So all they have to offer New Orleans is Billups and that’s not going to be enough. With Amare and Melo taking up the all the cap space they won’t have room for Paul in free agency (although we don’t know how things will be after the new Collective Bargaining Agreement). The Knicks need Paul if they want to compete for a championship. I’m waiting to see where Paul will end up, if he teams up with Dwight Howard somewhere that could be a winning tandem.

New York Knicks: 2013 NBA champions?

Pretty tough for anyone to overcome the loss of one of their main players but you’re right they didn’t have the depth they needed this season. Well the Big Three turned back the clock this year but whether can they do it again is a big question mark. Really hope there isn’t a lockout, that would suck bigtime.

Where the Celtics' season was lost

Agree Hanzo, they usually let the travel go for showtime dunks and such in the open court but the play I’m talking about was in the half court, where he travelled to beat the defenders, check out the video on the link to see what I mean.

The Miami Heat versus the world

Judging after today’s game you may be right mushi, looks like my pick for OKC v Memphis is already in peril. Z-Bo is a beast. I would love to see one of these teams make it to the final (mainly because I despise the Lakers).

NBA Playoffs Round 2 preview

Pulling out the advanced stats ey. Yeah but 50% ts isn’t particularly good either. But he is alive apparently with 6 3s in game 1.

NBA Playoffs preview: Western Conference

Jason Kidd is he still alive? Oh he is but he’s shooting 36% from the field for the season. Yikes!

NBA Playoffs preview: Western Conference

I agree with that, I think the Blazers can beat the Mavs, they’re a formidable team since the Wallace trade. And if they do win they will give LA a good shake too.

NBA Playoffs preview: Western Conference

ok, total dark horse but I would add Oklahoma to the list of contenders. Since they’ve got Perkins in the middle they’re tough team to play, they’ve got the size now and with Durant and Westbrook, they’ve got the scorers. Will be a tough matchup for the Spurs and Lakers that’s for sure.

NBA Playoffs - the 5 teams that can win the championship

Garnett always plays pretty good D on Amare and while no one can stop Melo, Pierce will do as well as anyone. The key matchup for me is probably Rondo and Billups. If Rondo doesn’t pick up his game, the Celts will be bounced sooner rather than later.

NBA Playoffs preview: Eastern Conference

I reckon the 76ers might give Miami more trouble than they expect. They are an athletic team and Iguodala is one of the best defenders for playing on Lebron. But I think you’re right all the favourites should win in the East. As bad as the Celtics are playing you’d think they will turn it around in the playoffs.

NBA Playoffs preview: Eastern Conference

that’s true Macca, I guess it could get worse. As you’ve noted, Carlton should be amongst the top 8 but there are better teams out there and you can only imagine the carnage if a Collingwood or Geelong gets fired up and really goes for it.

Gold Coast Suns face long road ahead

Those making pro-GC comments, keep in mind that the scoreline didn’t even reflect the absolute divide in class between these two teams. Carlton took the pedal off and still won by 20 goals. The reason the veterans didn’t step up, is because footy’s a team game, and if the rest of your teammates can’t help you, then you’re in big trouble, and that was certainly the case here.
Will they improve? Sure, they can’t get any worse.
Will they win a game? Sure, they can surprise a team like Brisbane or North Melbourne, but based off what we saw on Saturday night, it isn’t going to get much better than that this season.
