Not sure anyone on the planet bar perhaps Arnold’s kids would have expected that. Granted he never had the talent at his disposal, but the poor form of the team over the latter half of qualifying, where we were obviously well behind rivals like japan and saudi arabia did not auger well for our chances, despite a scrappy two knockout wins showing some real heart.
France aside, where we simply gave them to much time and space, the socceroos played perfectly to their strengths. Arnold took a team which on paper would not have merited a single starting player in the famous 2006 team, and bettered their performance. If he wants to continue he’s earned it, if he wants to retire in glory, or seek other opportunities, well done to him
Should Graham Arnold continue leading the Socceroos?
grateful we had tyler and not the cliched hyperbole of drury.
well done argentina!
'The Messi-ah!': World reacts to all-time classic final, but anger over 'poisoned' France and Qatar robe 'shame'
really poor effort. should’ve read your own words and realised they are too petty and mean to publish. very eager to follow a narrative that seeks to tear down someone who has given so much to the game.
Messi was always the better player, now Ronaldo has confirmed he's also the better man
That Carlton fan tweet just goes to show we all put our own slant on things. Being a Carlton fan it’s no wonder he has blinkered out the mass of positives.
I am in a similar boat as a Saint fan, but with actual historical evidence as to how shafted we get year after year in the fixture. Shafted again from a money earning perspective, but for once we’ve been looked after in the matchups. Or rather than looked after – for once actually given the draw our ladder position should afford us. No complaints at all. And residing now in south east qld i’m doubly delighted with visits to the gabba and metricon. Now just need to Saints to take this opportunity – it may not come around again.
Five winners and five losers from the 2023 AFL fixture: Grand finalist's brutal run, Blues' prime-time bonanza
Pity really – such a big game and no team to support.
Three nil Three Lions: England cruise past Senegal to set up mouthwatering clash with France
well done fellas. hold your heads high. finished with three oustanding games to inspire a new generation. two wins, two clean sheets, scored in every game from free play, and had argentinian hearts in mouths at the end. graham arnold – take a bow.
The Socceroos are out of the World Cup, but they've restored our faith in football
It’s a bit precious. If england were hosting and the danes came in viking gear no one would think anything of it. if we can’t laugh at ancient history we’re stuck with it.
Good, Bad & the Ugly: Jockeroos, the hazards of being Eden - and is this all a little boring?
Shy indeed, a very nervous performance, and after such a bright start. Just went into their shells and showed no belief once France had scored. That second half we just gave up the game. No hunger at all – just harm minimisation and allowed France all the possession and time on the ball. Contrast that with the Saudis – we put in an Iran level performance instead. lucky result in the other game keeps us in with a chance but Tunisia and Denmark both looked a lot quicker and more skillful.
REACTION: 'Welcome to world class football' - French stars destroy 'shy' Socceroos in Cup opener
No real arguments against that. Emerton the obvious ommission but based purely on world cup results it’s hard to deny two goals for Holman.
Mile and Ryan would be bench warmers in earlier teams but stood out in their world cup games. Could argue Schwarzer should be higher up but the top five seems clear.
Hard to argue for any of the original Socceroos on their three games but I haven’t seen anything but highlights of those games.
The ten greatest Socceroos on the World Cup stage
“During the 2012 season, his career achievements began to gain widespread recognition. Milne is only the 5th non-key position forward to kick more than 500 goals in the history of AFL/VFL football. He is the only player shorter than 180 cm to kick more than 500 goals since Kevin Bartlett in the 1980s. He was described during 2012 as one of the best small forwards ever to play AFL football.”
Compare his stats – his record puts him up there with any small forward, above most we think of. His reputation off the field meant he never received the accolades until the end of his career.
'Unfinished business': Ross Lyon explains return as St Kilda coach - and how an AFL legend helped convince him to go back
they resigned him knowing there was a six month termination clause because he had insisted at start of year when they held contract talks they’d make a decision by mid-season. They held off at start of year because they had question marks, but were 8-3 at mid-season and so the right thing was to sign. by end of Aug they were sounding out lyon. There was a fair bit more going on in the background with ratts and the players – evident in our attitude in the field. in the end it was the only smart decision to make. Keeping ratts would have seen a disaster in 2023.
'Unfinished business': Ross Lyon explains return as St Kilda coach - and how an AFL legend helped convince him to go back
Saints can’t say so, but you think they sacked ratten without already sounding lyon out months before. let’s just say lenny would have known what was coming before selling up in sydney and moving back.
'Unfinished business': Ross Lyon explains return as St Kilda coach - and how an AFL legend helped convince him to go back
This is stephen milne, possibly the greatest small forward in the game, who kicked a record 61 goals in 2005, under grant thomas? Happy for lyon to return, team needs much more accountability, but let’s not re-invent history. All lyon did was drop him for a game when his form was down.

The obvious and simplest solution is to have a rolling fixture, so that over time every team plays every other equally.
The issue is that the afl doesn’t want a fair and equal fixture – it wants revenue.
The supposed current 6-6-6 bracket system is only applied after marquee games have been fitted in.
as an example look at st kilda’s fixture every year – they get more double ups against teams in the higher bracket than their own 6. why? because they simply get slotted what is convenient after the afl has already scheduled in higher revenue raising matchups.
How to create a fairer AFL home and away season for all
Some surprising comments. I agree Arnie is shown up at this level and was a very poor choice from the get go. But. It’s the world cup. Of course I want us to get there, no matter how we do it. If it means Arnie’s tenure is extended one more year then it’s a price worth paying. Ideally we’d qualify and Arnie would retire and get out while the goings good. Maybe get picked up by a chinese team on the back of it. Nothing bigger than playing in the world cup, so who’d want to sacrifice that just to kickstart a quicker coaching turnover in the hopes of what? Making the next world cup?
No one wants to say it, but what happens if the Socceroos miss the World Cup?
You need to illustrate your argument. Literally. Not many of us have a photographic memory or wish to flick back and forth looking at logos.
That said the older and simpler logos stand the test of time. The Saints logo is the best of them. Carlton also one of the better ones. What’s wrong with a bit of latin? The motto is part and parcel of the club’s identity. A logo represents the club in its entirety, not just the current day and temporal, ever changing with the current trends. That said at least Melbourne, Dogs, Pies, and the Dees have reverted from their last awful recreations to a more traditional appearance.
The Giants, Suns, and Dockers are awful. The Swans is a good example of blending modern with new – relevant in their case as they need to represent their new home. The Crows logo should be binned. The rest are fine enough, although obviously not as they will soon change again to meet the whims of the marketing department.
The unofficial 2022 AFL team logo ranking - Part 1
I would say Australian fans are frustrated that with the complete overhaul of our national league we saw a lot of our history rejected and were promised iit would improve the standing and quality of the game locally and internationally. At a local level it came true, as the new league attracted new fans (how long for of course is another argument). As for quality it seems the opposite. We have not developed a single layer equal to the likes of our golden generation developed via the old ethnic based clubs and the academy. To equate the likes of Rogic, Mooy, Ryan, Hrustic and Souttar with the huge talent of Kewell and Viduka suggests the author lacks any judgement of talent. Kewell and Viduka weren’t depth players at top clubs – they were the stars of their clubs. Not one of our modern squad would make the starting eleven of our golden generation socceroos. For whatever reason we are no longer developing world class players the likes of the aforementioned, or Bosnich, Cahill, Schwarzer, Neill, Moore, Bresciano, Emerton, Grella, heck we don’t even have a Chipperfield, Aloisi, or Kennedy. Then add those that chose to play in other colours like Siminic and Vieri.
Yes European talent scouts plough the fields of ever widening lands, but that is because the talent in those lands has improved. Ours fields have withered, when we were promised otherwise. Our system of development needs to change.
Why are so many people frustrated by the fact that the Socceroos are simply not good enough?
Time aint waiting for SBW – no point a man of his talent wasting it fighting a celebrity boxer like Gallen unless he’s only interested in easy money.
'Sonny Bill wins': 'Sitting duck' Barry Hall gives his verdict on SBW match up with Paul Gallen
Ange scraped into a world cup via third place on the back of a cahill brace and a syrian shot hitting the post at the death, then a brace of penalties against honduras. His much better socceroos team struggled as much as the current crop. A home Asian cup was a good triumph (we finished runner up after extra time in the previous tournament in qatar) but also his only success with the socceroos. Whether a fan or not, his footballing style is not suited to sporadic coaching opportunities.
So Arnie has emulated his 2017 run, like then lets hope we make it, but realistically i think we all know Arnold is a very limited national coach and we’ll need a lot of luck to go our way, as it did in 2017.
'You are accountable': Bozza says Graham Arnold should go if Socceroos plunged into WC playoffs
Banger? Assumed he’d be no.1.
Then there’s the G-Train.
Strange list not to include these two in the top ten, let alone omitting them completely.

Why Australian Open has hardly missed Djokovic’s presence after deportation debacle
couldn’t give a fig that he isn’t there. if anything it improves what is generally a predictable and boring tournament. would be good if fed was playing as he and nadal would have a shot at a last classic final.
mens tennis has been rather dull for the latter era of the three greats, as we all expected others to come through, but none have. the djoker is most likely to finish ahead, but with 9 oz open finals padding his career stats its a bit like an english team with nine league cups claiming they are better than someone with eight fa cups. one is a lesser cousin of the other.
Why Australian Open has hardly missed Djokovic’s presence after deportation debacle
Exactly. But be ahead of anyone that hasn’t played by percentage.
Is your AFL mascot costing you premiership cups?
Nope. They’ll be sitting pretty in fourth place with a healthy (for carlton) percentage of 80 odd.
Is your AFL mascot costing you premiership cups?
Heather McKay says hello. Well above anyone mentioned here in relation to her dominance of her sport, or sports i should say as she was an international champion at another and an australian rep at a third.
Bit shocked there is no statue of Fraser or Court.
Which Aussie sportswomen should be immortalised with statues?
