Adam,There is talk at the moment about the prospect of the Bombers losing all their points. I was merely writing about what that might feel like for the fan, based on how it was for the Canterbury fans a decade ago. When the investigation is finished and if no points are lost, forget you ever read this.

Thanks Adam, but I wasn’t trying to compare NRL to AFL or vice versa. Just how Canterbury fans felt, and what Bombers fans might feel.

Again I think you miss the point. It’s not about refunds Stumpy. Forget the headline on the story. If not, glad you got a laugh.

Interesting analogy, but I do see your point Redb. True I cannot speak as an Essendon fan, and I was not trying to, I was just asking “I wonder what it would be like?”
Bombers members owed a refund
No it’s not my club but I can have an opinion of the way I would feel if it happened at my club Redb. What some people have interpreted is that I am attacking Essendon fans. I’m not, I’m actually supporting them and their feelings.

I’m with you Australian Rules, but clearly not everyone agrees.

Good thought bubble mds1970. What do people expect for their support?
Bombers members owed a refund
My intention was not to write something so I could say I told you so, merely just my thoughts that we shouldn’t forget about the fans and members, without whom, footy clubs wouldn’t survive.
Bombers members owed a refund
Some good points Jeff. I don’t know how much luck you will have with that refund though.

It could opens a hornets nest Franko in regards to other clubs.
Bombers members owed a refund
I’m glad that’s the way you and a lot of members feel Redb. My point wasn’t simply about getting refunds though, more about how tough it would be for fans in particular IF the points are taken away, and going from thinking about playing finals, to not playing them.
Bombers members owed a refund
You are right I don’t know you all vicbomber, and it is good to hear the experience has been galvanising. My point was more about others not forgetting the Essendon fans and members and that they too have suffered in all this, and they will also suffer IF competition points are taken away.

I know there are a variety of ‘footy’ codes played in Sydney, just as there are in other states. I don’t consider Australian Rules Football the only football, it was simply the term used here because this was an AFL column. There was and is no arrogance from me when it comes to the game, mate.

I agree, but Showdown and Derby were gone already. Maybe Sydney Stoush or Sydney Slugfest or for the time being the Sydney Smashing?

ANZ is a great venue but I agree this should – for the time being – be played at the SCG in round one, then Skoda later in the season when that ground is available.

That was outrageous, but I don’t think that has to be the only way you get noticed. The Swans get plenty of coverage simply by winning and playing finals.

The bottom line was the AFL wanted to tap into the huge multi cultural population and market in Western Sydney, and with the Swans doing well on and off the field, they thought it would be the right time to plant another team into the market. As they continue to tell us, there are enough people out there to support all codes, and there is. It’s just whether they are able to grab their slice of the public support. Eventually they will.

Funny how we so often end up in an AFL v NRL debate.

Great point. But they would also dearly love to get a solid start with this generation first.

Sheeds may not be coach after this season, but don’t expect to see him disappear. The Giants are certain to find some sort of role for him at the club, and I think he will continue to trumpet the cause for many years to come.

You are right Christo, there will be more balance in time, and you are right about Sydneysiders not backing losing teams without history behind them. I saw it with Swans in the early 1990s, a decade after they had been in town. Crowds were similar to what GWS are getting now, and they hardly got a line in the media. Three years later, they recruited well, made the grand final, and were the darlings of the city. The brains trust at GWS realise what has to be done, and hopefully they will set about doing that at the end of this season. Getting Buddy would be great off field as well as having a superstar on the field, but is he what they really need to be successful sooner? Depends what you consider successful I guess.

They do need that experience of some classy, elite players to add to their talented kids, and if the talk is correct, then hopefully some trading will be done at the end of the season, But it looks like they want to swap draft picks not their talent right now. The bottom line though is will the type of elite player they want and need give up what they have to come to GWS?

Just your opinion Australian Rules, and I can live with that. After all, isn’t that what this site is all about – sparking discussion and airing opinions?
