Maybe a tad hard on the Roos. I feel that they are the best of the bottom group. Difficult to get a great read on them with only two matches so far this season, but I can’t posssibly see how North Melbourne will make the finals.

Contenders, pretenders and cellar dwellers emerge

Hird will not get sacked, in fact he is probably the coach in the AFL LEAST likely to be sacked this year.

Then again, the same was said when Blight took control of the Saints, and he got the flick, so I guess stranger things have happened.

Crystal ball gazing for 2011 AFL season

Cleary optimistic about the Blues prospects this season, good stuff Charlie.

Crystal ball gazing for 2011 AFL season

MyLeftFoot, I think the season opener will always get 10,000 to 15,000 more people through the gate, just for the fact that it is the first game of the season.

It would be great to see 80,000 at the MCG on Thursday, and hopefully Richmond can put up more fight than what they have in the previous couple of years.

On October 1 this year we will see who got closer to the mark Charlie!

Enjoyed reading your take on this season Charlie. Agree with a lot of your comments. However….

* I can’t see Carlton finishing 4th. The Blues rely far too heavily on Judd. Gibbs, Murphy, etc would have to have exceptional years for Carlton to make top four.

* Andrew Swallow or Kieran Jack for Brownlow? Very doubtful. Umpires have their well established favourites, and I expect one of those players to win.

* Swans are a question mark this year as well, as you note. Hard to pick where they will finsih. Could be anywhere between 5th and 13th I’d say, which is obviously fairly broad.

* I admire the Kangaroos for their famed Shinboner Spirit, but cannot see them coming 5th. Give them another couple of years and they may well challenge for a position from 4th to 6th, but not this year.

Apologies, that is a typo, line should read – “I expect one of Worsfold, Ratten or Voss to part ways with their club mid-season.”

I think that one of Worsfold, Ratten or Voss will either be sacked or asked to leave before we get to the end of this season.

Text has been changed now, thanks for pointing this out Walt.

Good argument MLF.

Any takers on playing him in the ruck?

I think those skills you mention (good hands, good acceleration off the mark, strength, good heigh and leap, zero fear) would all suggest he could go well in short bursts in the ruck.

Izzy ready for the AFL? Not by a long shot

Interesting comments Redb.

Not sure Port Adelaide qualify as a “strong AFL side”, many are predicting them to finish bottom four this season.

True, with good supply from the midfield, even the best key defenders can get towelled up, but it wasn’t the fact that he got beaten which leads me to think he will struggle, but the manner in which he got beaten.

Izzy ready for the AFL? Not by a long shot

From a standing start his kicking looked alright on Saturday. Unsure how he would go on the run, but wouldn’t punt the house on him picking out a target with an opposition player in hot pursuit.

Izzy ready for the AFL? Not by a long shot

I can’t see Folau cutting it as a centre half-forward. It is the most difficult position on the grond to play in terms of where to position yourself, when to lead, etc, and takes years to master.

Izzy ready for the AFL? Not by a long shot

I think that Folau is possibly already regretting his decision to switch codes.

In recruiting him, GWS may have made the transition from league to AFL player sound easier than what it is, and now Izzy is finding that out the hard way.

Izzy ready for the AFL? Not by a long shot

Adelaide are the great unknown, and I think the side could go either way. Injury to Tippett from practice match will hurt, as will speculation of Taylor Walker moving to GWS. Walker has been in excellent form in the pre-season.

Last year was the first season that the Crows missed the finals since Neil Craig took over.

Hard to pick which way the side will go this year.

Which non-Victorian side will be first to challenge for a premiership?

I’d forgotten about that promo, good memory James!

A quick search of Wikipedia makes me think it must have been the 2003 AFL season, when all six non-Victorian sides made the finals. I think that the vision of all the state premiers sitting arond playing cards was before the first finals match that year between Freo and the Bombers, although I can’t be sure.

Which non-Victorian side will be first to challenge for a premiership?

Maybe I am selling the Swans a bit short Rich Daddy.

More than any other side in the AFL, the Swans as a team are more than just the sum of their parts.

As a collection of individual players the Sydney list looks middle of the road, but the side consistently out-performs expectations, which is a credit to the whole club, and all involved.

I think Bradshaw will struggle to stay fit this year, and the Swans will rely too heavily on Goodes.

Having said that, it would be great if the side proved me wrong and they pushed for a top four spot this year… I just can’t see it happening.

Which non-Victorian side will be first to challenge for a premiership?

If you were framing a betting market on which of the non-Victorian sides will be next to win the AFL Premiership, I would have the Suns at second favourite, after Fremantle.

I thought it was 5 losses for the Aussies in row for Twenty20 matches, but am happy to be corrected. Any takers?

England claim Twenty20 record with Aussie scalp

Johnson is a big hitter jameswm. The idea would be to put him in to start swinging from the opening ball of his innings. If he gets out, no big deal. Fair bit of potential upside in this if he gets going, not a whole lot of down side if he gets out swinging in the first ball or two of his innings.

England claim Twenty20 record with Aussie scalp

Fair point Vinay, England are a very good Twenty20 side, and the England side fieled considerably better than the Autralians.

If you were to rate each Australian player on their performance, how many would score better than average? Compare this with the England team, who seemed to my eye to have a much more even contribution from all the players.

Yes, Australia lost by only 1 wicket, but I put that down to Watson’s amazing effort with bat and ball. He dragged the side along with him. I don’t think the closeness of the result truly demonstrates the gulf between the two teams.

If you were to make a composite side from the Australia and England sides which took the field last night, how many Aussies would get a game?

England claim Twenty20 record with Aussie scalp

England, man for man, played much better than Australia. At one stage is looked like it was Shane Watson versus England. Even if Australia had won, there was plenty to worry about with the way they played.

England claim Twenty20 record with Aussie scalp

A few more thoughts…

* Would it have been worth promoting Tim Paine, who is in good form and can strike the ball well, up the order?
* On the same point, Mitchell Johnson can smack the ball miles, why not put him in to try and capitalise on the good start by Watson. If he gets out first ball, you haven’t really lost much. If he gets hold of a couple of balls he could add 20-odd runs in quick time.

Marketing Best 11? Interesting thought.

What a match! Tough result for Australia. No doubt they reflect on their innings and feel they didn’t push hard enough in the middle overs. Finishing their 20 overs with only 4 wickets down, both Cameron White and David Hussey didn’t capitalise on the great start by Shane Watson. England got off to a great start and were well ahead of the required run rate early, and managed to hang on despite some Shane Watson heroics with the ball.
