Luv'd aussie rules for over 50 years. Luv the gradual emergence of a truly national and balanced competition.

Your sentiments are honourable, but like all industries, these businesses need to adapt to their market, and maybe they do try. If so, then that’s better than hanging on for success of the sport in Victoria, that’s for the VFL league, not this one. On the topic, GWS is a success so far and continues to show signs of becoming a critical asset to this league.

This weekend's grand final justifies the AFL's Giant investment

Wasted season? Nah, they got to and almost won a prelim. More than my team by some margin. Your comments were mostly positive anyway.

Collingwood's magnificent failure leads to a wasted season

How often in reality does the draft run to allocation? Even where this is true, it is usually at the bottom 40 picks and half the time the players presented in those positions are passed down the line, many to selection oblivion. That is not unreasonable in itself, natural selection and all. My point is that the top 20 or maybe 30 picks each year virtually never follow pick allocation because of the rank trade power imbalances in this competition. The clubs have gamed the system into a virtually free market.

Who had the better season: Geelong or Collingwood?

Humorous…….maybe? Possibly you would like to have head hair also? Anyway, an absolute stand out gun has won this years Brownlow. We move on.

Nat Fyfe wins second Brownlow Medal

Well said. Fools propose otherwise.

Cats.

Who had the better season: Geelong or Collingwood?

George, you can split hairs on the backyard talent point, but basically it is irrelavent and has been for >30 years. The draft exists to eliminate advantages some clubs used to have by dominating their backyard either geographically or demographically or both. So, in fact, there are no clubs that can boast greater backyard talent than others. What is reasonable to put on this point is that certain geographies of this country and certain demographies are more productive interns of producing top end talent than others. That is of course a function of history and nothing to do with the way any of the clubs are run. Clubs develop players they get, they don‘t have a special sauce.

Adding Joe Daniher won't solve Sydney's biggest issues, but it may be a turning point

Yeah, reasonable optimism. I‘m sure you realise that this phenomenon is common and results from really committed players giving 110% in the face of defeat. A good sign indeed.

Thanks for your assessment of my response, at the same time as agreeing with me. Nice work. Melb and Bris May have made the finals at those times, but they were not the power teams by any stretch. You went over board in your original response about Fyfe, you missed the fact that it‘s almost always the case that the umps give votes to the most obvious players in very strong teams. So, we are back where we started…….this is a best and fairest in the comp award. A Fyfe or Kelly type is just as worthy as a Dangerfield.

2019 AFL Brownlow Medal: Favourites

But that’s not what that medal is awarded for. And of course the counter to your argument is that…………..of course players who win it are usually (almost always) from strong clubs (of the moment)………because their team mates make them look good. So, what’s wrong with a true champ from a weak club winning it….against all odds? Nothing. Were Stynes, Kelly or Voss unworthy in the 90s? No, absolute guns all of them, just as Fyfe is.

2019 AFL Brownlow Medal: Favourites

Very satisfying to see GWS get their opportunity, and will be against the odds to win it. Yes, they got 11 top 20 draft picks in 2011……….obviously a valid start up concession. Following year was 5 of top 20, but tailed away each year after that to 3, 2 or 1 of the top 20. No different to two other groups of clubs really, ie; the bottom 8 who are given preference in the draft and the top Vic clubs who have trade power (gaming the go home factor) over the rest of the comp. Arguments this week from the usual suspects in the Vic fan base about concessions to GWS are just weak as water. Of the 31 “top 20 picks” GWS have had to date, only 14 remain at the club and only about half of them are a lock in each week’s selections (one of whom is part timer Jon Patton, who is apparently on his way anyway). Not a zac different to any other club really.

Brilliant GWS set up a Giant Grand Final

Pity Hodgey wasn‘t playing when T Libba was around then? Worst of all time, big statement I know, but deserving.

Straight-sets exits await Geelong and Brisbane

A genuine person who seemed to love those around him, infectious. Played, coached, commentated, built, developed, criticised and loved this sport. A dedicated top level pro. RIP. Condolences to family and friends.

Remembering Danny Frawley

RFC too good. Typical finals series……top 4 stretch the gap between next 4.

Eat my Dust: Richmond batter inaccurate Brisbane to book home prelim

Scoreline suggests could have been a significant rout. Anyway, WB made it to finals, my Swans didin‘t. Well done. I want finals.

Bulldogs' finals finished after a Giant belting

I would never write off the Cats until the GF is played and they are not in it.

Pies into prelim after conquering Cats

Great win for the Pies against top quality opposition. Scores are irrelevant except for who’s in front; because the point of this sport and partic the finals is to win the match at hand, not please everyone.

Pies into prelim after conquering Cats

It’s a relative thing. IE if you do it a lot you get better at it, if you don’t have to do it at all you have a distinct advantage.

Five talking points from West Coast vs Essendon

Who is your team Chris? Can you really say that if it was any of the Vic teams travelling multiple weeks in a row to play finals footy that you would be so dismissive of this major additional hurdle faced by the Eagles and others?

Five talking points from West Coast vs Essendon

No, he has 3 left; so you think Buddy was a waste for Sydney?

Buddy brilliant: After one 'bad' year, Sydney's rebuild is already complete

I’d like to agree with Swans, they may start to play at that level but would surprise if they barged back into the 8 ( and I mean for the 2020 finals ). Hawks I believe could go either way, I can see how they can go backwards, but I’m not forecasting that.

Which non-finals team is best poised to rebound next season?

You’re right. Tempting as it sounds, cos he is a talent, I’m not in favour myself. What have Swans actually said about this possibility, anything?

Buddy brilliant: After one 'bad' year, Sydney's rebuild is already complete

Well, ok that’s possible, but if not, does that mean the entire recruitment and compensation he will have been paid or ever earn will have been a waste for the club?

Buddy brilliant: After one 'bad' year, Sydney's rebuild is already complete

What are the chances by 2022? A buddy premiership or an Adam Trelour prem?

Buddy brilliant: After one 'bad' year, Sydney's rebuild is already complete

How bout nothin, just for fun. Heh heh.
