For my birthday last December I got two presents: an RACQ membership and the news that Hugh McCluggage had re-signed with the Lions. I…
There is electricity in the Brisbane air. The back half of the season saw the Lions finally start to generate some buzz around their…
Definitely not shoe-ins. Improved yes, certainties no.
Brisbane Lions mid-season review
Brisbane went 4-6 in the back end of last year and didn’t improve their percentage by much. My entire article outlines where they have improved and where they have not. More to the point, I’ve watched every game and I stand by the statement: They have improved significantly, particularly in their structures, that has them with a positive percentage and win/loss count. Nuff said
Brisbane Lions mid-season review
Medical and High performance teams at the Lions are magicians!! Jarrod Berry would have gone to Cripps if available but even then may have lowered his colours. Brisbane don’t have that relentless annoying tagger that gets under Cripps’ skin. Fagan is much more a people manager than a strategist. 2 Ruckmen work when McInerney takes marks and the belief is that kicking down the line reduces costly turnovers. Still a young side so they do get it wrong.
Brisbane Lions mid-season review
Lions Home Games: Eagles, Power, Pies, Swans, Crows, Hawks. 4 top 8 sides and 2 perennial finalists. All easy huh?
Which AFL coach should be the next to go?
He certainly knows how to put bums on seats in a state not known for attending sport. Worth every dollar they spent just on membership and gate takings. As you say, the roll on effect through the junior ranks could well be his greatest legacy. Hope he plays another year or 2 wherever that may be
The Buddy effect
How good was Liam Ryan’s Hangar!!!! Put big Maxy face first in the dirt too. Great stuff!
Outrage is ruining our game
The Lions vs Crows game was a cracker! Only 1 point in it but the Lions didn’t look like losing it. High pressure 4 quarter game from both teams was really enjoyable to watch. Lions in the top 4 with Freo, Hawks and Blues before the bye.
Five talking points from AFL Round 9
It wasn’t a pretty game to watch. At one stage in the third qtr we had 75% time in possession and had kicked 1.4. Wins a win tho and a win clear in the top 4 is kind of exciting
Eight talking points from AFL Round 7
RA has handled this appallingly.
Izzy is entitled to his opinion regardless of his intentions.
RA should have come out and simply stated that they don’t agree, condone nor support Izzy’s beliefs and in fact he is paid by people who contradict his beliefs ultimately making him a hypocrite.
This would undermine his stance rather than radicalising it.
Then they should have made sure every time Izzy gets on a Qantas jet he is served by gay men wearing t-shirts saying “I’m going to hell, would you like some tea?”
Folau speaks for the first time since sacking announcement
I’m at 8 and that’s only coz I don’t know what 3 of them mean!!!
Heaven sounds like it’s the most boring place to ever exist in someone’s imagination
Rugby union would be a more inclusive, kinder place without Israel Folau and his backwards views
Who may well be on his way to a Brownlow and a finals appearance…
The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 4
It may simply have to do with the temperature in Geelong. Hard to warm up muscles when it’s 3 degrees outside. That’s not a problem in Brisbane or Perth. On the McCarthy front: he’s an A grader through and through. I can definitely see why the Cats put so much time into him. Glad he’s getting a crack at it up here.
The unexpected rise of Lincoln McCarthy
Already got my tickets to the Pies game!
Really enjoyed booing the Power in the second quarter and watching them shank it. The Gabbatoir is dubbed such as it kills teams finals aspirations not poor animals.
Brisbane Lions of old as 'The Gabbatior' returns
It’s interesting that Essendon only beat the last placed team because their forwards couldn’t tackle and their defence had holes the size of Tasmania in it. The Lions will offer no such luxury and I’m tipping them to dish out a flogging
The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 4
The Ladder round 3.
1. This is what “Clinical in front of goal” looks like.
2. This time last year they lost by 5 to the same team. It seems the lessons have been learned
3. Now that’s a gutsy performance.
4. The last player to kick 7 from 30 touches was Stevie J in 2011. I know. He told me lol
5. Ooops. Losing to the Suns wasn’t part of the deal.
6. That’s how you form in to PREMIERSHIP favouritism.
7. I thought their midfield had no depth??
8. I take credit for booing them off target in the second quarter. Shank city.
9. If, like me, you tipped them to win 2 for the year, then maybe, like me, you need to reassess this team.
10. We were so close!
11. Same game plan, same result. Plenty of time to hatch a new one but it HAS to be done.
12. The decline looks entrenched even with a win.
13. This is what “Wayward in attack” looks like.
14. The list of unavailable keeps getting longer.
15. See what happens when you try!!
16. Bolton should have a chat to Fagan about how to instill a winning mindset
17. Hmmmm… just hmmmmmm.
18. There’s a stratergy in football called Defence. I suggest they Google it.
Eight talking points from AFL Round 3
Finally!!!
Thanks Tony.
Someone has Finally put some time into writing up the Lions.
They are on Fire!
I’ve watched every minute of every game and was at the Gabba for their win over Port.
This team, lead by Fagan, has built a culture of constant improvement, and a list that will threaten all comers for years to come.
Round 1 vs West Coast the Lions showed exciting scoring and a well organised Defence.
Round 2 vs North, they showed Resilience, Poise and the ability to Travel.
On Saturday night, they showed their Desire to win, regardless of how the game was going, and loved having a Parochial crowd helping them out.
The Lions finally have every position on the fieĺd covered. Neal is averaging 40 touches, Robinson is influencing games, McCluggage is making every touch count, if it’s not Hipwood kicking 6 then it’s Charlie kicking 4. Josh Walker took 6 interceptions vs Port plus another 8 marks!
Now let’s be honest: Zak Bailey, Alex Witherden, and at times, Daniel Rich butchered the ball out of defence, And, in all honesty we should have lost the game.
But you could see the tempo escalate significantly in the last 10 minutes as the kids and guns combined to produce the points.
The next 2 weeks will establish the Lions season. Essendon finally found their Mojo and the Pies will make the Gabba a near sell out for round 5.
In 2 weeks we will know if the boys from Bris Vegas are the real deal and if they’re 5 n 0 then I’ll be screaming PREMIERSHIP loud and bold!!!
The Lions are roaring to the top
To Answer your first question: Yes there is. Ellyse Perry. Between her and Phillips we have 2 superstars of our 2 most popular sports winning everything they touch.
Best on ground in the AFLW Grand Final should be named the Erin Phillips Medal.
Phillips kills it - and why the AFL is impossible to predict in 2019
This weeks Ladder
1. Guns n Rookies all performing just like my fantasy team.
2. Fagan has used the word: Resilience about 15 times this year. It shows.
3. Playing players in their natural position works! Who would have thought?
4. 2 and 0! Who would have thought?!?
5. Continuity counts aye Luke.
6. 58. Now that’s a Ross Lyon score.
7. Beams looks like a good get…
8. Coniglio won’t run a Brownlow if he can’t best a tag
9. Don’t worry. Clark always keeps a gem up his sleeve.
10. Bungie jumping the flag in was Awesome! So were the Eagles
11. And 3 qtr time they’d kicked 4-16!
12. Hopefully the girls have shown them the light.
13. Soooo, let’s trade out all our depth. Hmmmm…
14. Josh did mention 0 and 2 is their favourite starting position.
15. 0 and 2 is their normal starting position
16. 0 and 2 is not the position we had planned.
17. Aaah guyyys… the season started 2 rounds ago. Just saying.
18. Premiership favourites huh?

You tipped Essendon??
That there is where you went wrong
Ten talking points from AFL Round 2
You beat me to it!
Norths worst loss will be this weekend at the hands of a hungry pride of Lions!
North Melbourne's worst losses under Brad Scott
He can really play!! Kicks em from 60, can take a hanger, has great vision, excellent skills, sticks his tackles and seems like a really lovely guy. Here’s hoping the Lions medical team can get him to 100 games in the not to distant future
