Diego: A genius unbound

Apa

As always a great read, well structured and written…

H was working in NZ in 86 and did the morning feed and looking after my first born sun, it needed me to get up at Five in the morning just as the first game started and the second game started at Seven…

Just a joy to watch, and his fall in life outside Football if that is the correct term has lead to a lot of understanding of what sudden fame and money can do to a person. Resulting world wide across most major sporting codes of great players being better looked after.

Always spoke his mind and that takes guts…. and its one of the reasons people loved him so much…

I watched the entire 86 WC every game every minute …

He was not a class above, he was many levels above the next best player

Diego: A genius unbound

He will be missed, he was never afraid to speak his mind regardless of the topic and who was there

Not capitalism… democracy brought about our positions… and demoamacy was brought about largely by the over reach of uncontained capitalism …

Capitalism is just another … ism…. same as socialism, communism, and many other ism’s ..

Democracy allows capitalism to operate …

The A-League must show support for Black Lives Matter this season

I think its a good idea.

Broadly it fits well in the No to Racism theme in Football.

The world is a funny place those making political are the right sayings its political…

Generally the hard right say conservative side of Australia have never supported Football…. much more into the collision codes… So I don’t see a big downside as others have indicated..

The A-League must show support for Black Lives Matter this season

What a gift to give our new owner a Mariners triple FFA cup Champions Premiers.

Sounds goooooood Stuart.

As Groucho Marx once said I don’t try and raise my standards to the town ….more drag them down to my level

Everyone gonna need to exist on Mariner budgets which is good

Australian football edges towards the 'new normal' while the EPL goes bonkers!

Good read Stuart..

India is waiting to explode in many areas, sports will be one.

The issue for Australia, is, India like many other nations will improve rapidly and catch us.

We can’t stop the game growing…

India in another 20 years will be a different place in sporting terms…

Indian Super League: An improving competition and A-League threat

Gotta give it to Liverpool they have less money than many of the other mega clubs… they have shown themselves to be very astute in buying and selling players …

Rumours of Kalidou Koulibaly joining Liverpool are back

Puts on helmet … waits for the brick bats…

Gotta say I am happy the Broncos got the spoon…

Just in case anyone needs reminding… Manly have never had the spoon…

A real Schadenfreude moment …

Great read, enjoyable article.

Agree, give the kids a go and I think we will be surprised at how good the Football will be.

Hopefully those running the game can get in control of the conversation and we don’t continue negatively looking at Australian Football.

Why 2021 is about to put the A back in the A-League

Will the coach I had in 1976 used small sided games, was just we did not call them small sided games …

I can still remember training nights, they would start with stretching, then three times around the oval,

Then the routines would start, each for between 5 to 10 minutes.
One on one
Two on one
Three on two
Three on three -One touch – Then two touch
Then a couple of games all revolving around the centre circle
Game one all players aside from one on the circle with a player in the middle trying to get the ball you could not move from your spot all one touch when the player in the middle either got the ball or a pass not to feet then a new player in the centre.
Same with two players in the middle
Same with three players in the middle,
Then five on five two touch inside the penalty box.
Then a half field game with all players
Stretches
While stretching discuss formations, showing for the ball, closing down space.

Coach was an Australian plumber

He used the Liverpool coaching method of the day which was when we lost the ball every player got behind the ball and either marked a space or player this until the ball was just outside our box, In the box two forwards would roam in space in front of the ball.

When we won the ball all players pushed off their marked and showed for the ball.

Gotta back JB …

Has Australia missed another golden generation?

Pun

Very true

Has Australia missed another golden generation?

The answer is simple the how is where it gets complex.

Australian Football needs much more money…

How we get that money is complex…

Me thinks many who write on the quality or changing quality of our player base fail to understand the migrant demographic.

In the 50’s/60’s/ 70’s and into the early 80’s the migrant base was essentially European from Football nations that valued sport and Football in particular.

The parents of these migrants very often did the training after they returned from the factories in which they worked or building sites …

Today our migrant base is less interested in sport generally, and cricket often the sport of choice with some.

Education is often seen as far more important than sport….

This has been IMO the biggest reason for the change…

Nice article mate … keep being positive mate it helps…

Anyone bemoaning the lack of Aussies in the English Premier League is missing the point

Good move I hope it works…

Is three Popovics a few too many?

agree

Is three Popovics a few too many?

have had similar experiences …

Is three Popovics a few too many?

I have Optus sport and they do a great job so will soon have something to watch…

Games to watch out for in EPL Week 1

From what I saw of the two boys…. I would leave them in Australia they did not stand out as being brilliant or of a higher quality than a number of other players their own age…

I remember years ago I was coach of an under 11 side, and we had this amazingly talented 10 year old…. he was coached by his father who had played 6 games for Italy and had been a seria player for many years…

He kept yelling instructions to his son in Italian … I have limited but not no experience in Italian …. anywho I worked out his was over ruling my instructions to his son…

So I asked him why, as in my over 35 team I had two NSL Under 21 coaches and they helped me set up the training and game days…

His response was honest and straight forward, I want my son to be a professional and only I know his strengthens and weakness and we work on them every day so he will not play a team game we use these games as training …

I suggested he go to an NSL club as they have far better training and he said he had but they also lacked the ability to coach his son….

Essentially this guy trusted no one aside from himself to train and develop his son…

I wonder if this is how Poppa feels as well…

As a follow up on the player and his Dad, another parent knew him quite well and when his son was 14 he took him back to Italy but he never made the grade and he continues to this day to blame Australian coaches for his son failure to make it as a professional in Europe.

I think this would be the dumbest thing Poppa could do, but blood and family are not easily overcome.
