My proposal for Round 1 of the 2015 AFL season

I think this is an issue for the England team BP. There is no experience from foreign leagues. The diversity (or lack there of), seems to be an issue.
Does anyone know of any current English players playing top level abroad?

Mezut Ozil plays for Arsenal.

I agree James.
The players know that a ref rarely pays a free kick without a player going to ground. This means they are forced to exaggerate any contact so the ref can see what happened. When there is genuine holding in the penalty area during a corner that attackers are never awarded a penalty, even when the holding is at its most obvious!

The World Cup has a diving problem

Of course they will. It’s all relative Hawker. What I was focussing on is the guts to rebuild a team of ageing stars. Just because they got the job done in the past doesn’t mean they will in the future. While I’m not comparing the two team’s quality, I am comparing their ability to spot a train wreck coming.

Spanish outstay their welcome and pay the price

I think there is a comparison between Spain and the Socceroos. Spain are the socceroos before Postecoglou. If Aus went into the WC with Holger still at the helm and the same old ageing stars we would be in a hole far deeper than that of Spain. However just a short time out the tough decision was made and a rebuilt team has taken to the field winning many plaudits. I shudder to think what would have happened if we hadn’t made these changes. Similarly the writing was on the wall for this Spanish side at the Confederations cup, but nothing was done. Sometimes it is hard to let go of those absolute champions though.

Am I watching the same sport as everyone?
Whilst I think there is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to the umpiring when the ball is in a scrap, I think the game is in great shape.
I love watching a hard bruising encounter, just as much as a fast running open game.

Leave the rules alone. Just adjudicate better. The game will find a way of sorting itself out.
I live in Perth, and the Freo fans over here just love the way their team play. All the supporters have bought into the game style. Tell them Ross Lyon should be penalised..

It's time to leave the laws of Australian Football alone

+1. I get really annoyed at the length of time this takes sometimes. Others the whistle goes for a ball up at lightning speed. Blow the whistle and throw it up… none of this “I’m going this way” rubbish… we know, its backwards!!

It's time to leave the laws of Australian Football alone

I’m a Port Adelaide supporter that hasn’t been to a HOME game since 1998. Many away matches in Brisbane, and now a few in Perth. I was there to see Port win on Saturday night. Starting to forget what enjoying the roar of a home crowd feels like. Have to get my fix at Rugby internationals.

A footy fan's away day experience

Tipping early this season is proving to be very difficult. Surprising form… or lack thereof means you’re very tentative.
On paper Freo Swans looks close, or it could be a blow out.
Same can be said with Port WCE, Dogs Blues, Melb GC, Adel GWS and also ESS STK.

AFL Round 5 preview panel

It would be nice once in a while to have one of these marquee events outside Victoria. You make a strong case for the Dogs V Kangas, I think they deserve to have a look in, but no more than any other club starved of a marquee event.

Who deserves Good Friday footy?

Lazza, Im a WA based Port Adelaide FC member. My membership is an interstate one. Am I a “pretender”?

AFL finals berths are taking shape

Can I just say I hate the tag “big brother” when referring to the Swans in relation to the Giants.

Famous Giants victory means a genuine Sydney rivalry is born

productivity the last hour has been terrible!!

The Ashes: Australia vs England First Test day two cricket live scores, updates

I don’t think it will happen. If it does however it wont work with an “Allies” or “Rest” team. As a non-Victorian I have no desire to support that team.

AFL State of Origin: let's get it going

He’s been injured Seano, made his come back in the SANFL recentley. Shouldnt be too far away, having said that, tough to crack into that team at the moment.

Port once again a Power

Thanks gents, this whole song business seems interesting… Japanese… Rod Stewart!!!!
I think your last point BG is what interests me. Its the fact that here we dont see this kind of support for our different codes. I dont think I uderstand why someone going to a football game wants to jump and chant when someone who goes to anyother sport doesn’t. The only thing I can think of is that they feel like they are “supposed” (possibly the wrong word there) too.
Either way, I’m glad they do. I went to some simply terrible Brisbane Roar games about 4 years ago. The crowd was by far the best part of the game!

Is the Wanderers havoc an example of copycat hooliganism?

I’ve thought about this kind of thing before…. not the hooligan side of things, but the way the fans support their team inside the stadium.
I’ve been attending all types of sport for years, and the type of support offered by fans at A-league games is different from any other sport I have seen. By this i don’t mean worse at all…
The jumping, dancing, singing, instruments, I dont know of it existing anywhere else in this country, happy to be corrected here. Are the fans doing it because “thats what football fans do?” I dont know, but I’ver certainly thought about it.
Is it some sort of identitiy crisis? I have heard that some A-league teams have changed the words to some English team songs to be relevant to them, again, happy to be corrected.

Get down with the AFL split round

Agreed. I think this is less about WC and more about where Freo are going to be.

Will the West Coast Eagles suffer a slip in 2013?

How do you think the bombers will go at the start of the season redb?

Bombers want footy, not emotion

I like the idea a lot. I am worried about participation rates from the top players though. How about the idea that you can only be selected for All Australian if you were selected for your State first?
I’m not sure where the accolade of All Australian sits with the players, but I do imagine its an incentive.
Thoughts?

The players are right: bring back AFL State of Origin

I know this feeling too GC. Not for SOO but for cricket. Australia’s utter dominance for so long ruined it for me. I would constantly want the other team to win, just to make it a contest. Even now I still don’t have the passion for it I once did.

Are any other Queenslanders sick of winning?

I am prepared for the booing. Not the incognito part, I have my teal scarf (far exceeding the maximum limit of healthy levels of teal for one day).

Ode to the interstate sporting trip
