Dunkan, that took me right back to that day. I was so elated at half time when we had it in the bag and so depressed and in sheer utter disbelief at the gall of those Melbournaliens winning for the first time and against St George.
I’d just moved to a new town and watched that promising game with some new mates. They didn’t want to know me after that. I was catatonic.
NRL finally forced into suspending season
‘Tis a scratch…a mere flesh wound…come back here I’m not finished with you yet’ boasted the Black Knight. If only the Dragons showed an ounce of his pluck. Cumon Saints slay those Tigers

Dane Gagai DESERVEDLY won The Wally Lewis Medal last year-the first winger to achieve that-he was that amazing.
If Irvine, who I know little about, did what Gagai did consistently over years, which his stats suggest he did, then he would have been out of this world.

Is referring broken or are we? 100% Footy promo tonight opens “The latest on the refereeing debacle”. If I had my way at ch9 I’d penalise anyone ranting and raving about refs calls, but what would I know. Obviously the back room boys n girls know what the crowd feeds on.
Back in the day when the AFL indroduced Trial by Video-a revolutionary response to regular All In Brawls, where players, trainers, coaches, anyone and everyone on and off the field “biff-vented”-Latrobe University Sociology researching domestic violence, observed a coinciding spike followed by a return to “normal” levels. They hypothesised that people found getting out their frustrations in other ways helped save family cohesion.
Is ref nay ref boss bashing the last bastion of pent-up steam? I’ve often heard extremely logical analysts totally blowup emotionally when their team is involved. Good on em-go you good thing! I think it’s a problem though when analysis is too mixed with emotional reactions. What’s right and wrong? The refs call is what.
I love the big hard hits and aggression of the big pigs and bo riddly, the pluck and guile of the pilittleons, the power and speed of the left and righteous ones and I love the acrobatic super flys zipping down the sidelines over, under and around the corner post.
If refereeing is broken, how do we fix it?
Well put Steve re:refsfault; they don’t always get it right – like me bloody computer, what is totally logical, doesn’t even. Slippery grass, rub of the green, blue, bloody moroon, or the ball that falls into an orf side chest-shiet happens. Get with it, over or around it – the environment blarhdyha.
I get your aversion to journalistic suppression/direction. Tough question, really? Why?
I wonder do they complain about the refs over there as much as they do here? Is it our esteemed heritage to have a go against authority or is it our privilege?
P.S are half holes better than no whoes?
Do commentators have a duty to 'talk up' their sport?
Hey Tim, wouldn’t it be interesting to combine your stats with psychometric test results including their unconscious favourite colours and what animal/hero they’d like to be? ?
You think the referee hates your side? Check the stats first
One year? Just give me one day as boss of ch 9 and I’ll fix the “refereeing problem”! ?
Penalty Wars 2018: The NRL surrenders… again
SOO was a great game to watch, with both teams playing with the discipline they declared before the game. The Rabbitohs v titans game on Friday night was a bit of a debacle because of the constant infringements of a desperate titans. You can’t extol or blame the refs for players behaviour. The onus is on the players to show some respect for the game and the fans. Same for the commentators. We should be hearing from them “both teams played very disciplined footy tonight… or gees the titans put on a poor show”
In defence of referees
I was referring to the commentary on tv, not the refereeing itself. Usually they do voice descent but I can’t recall any on Saturday night. Maybe it was a policy not to in light of the embarrassing carryons at Ch 9.
In defence of referees
Totally agree, Mary. So sad to hear Sterlo getting on the ref bashing bandwagon. Earlier in the year I got the impression he was supporting the refs decisions. I guess it’s contagious.
I love Joey’s analytics but I’m embarrassed for him and co when they carry on and on and on about the refs like 9 year olds.
It was refreshing to watch the wallabies v Ireland game and not hear any whinging about the ref.

Titans almost beat the dour bunnies with enthusiasm but for their indiscipline.

The Barry, I think you are logical in your reasoning, but I suspect your facts support an underlying theory that the refs are being dodgy.
This was always going to be a close game (I tipped the sharks mostly based on the Fifita factor and home ground). So, it had its ebbs and flows. I don’t think the dogs gave away cynical penalties early, they over enthusiastically rushed their defence under the pressure of an attacking sharks with plenty of ball in hand. After 5 penalties they we’re warned of a sin bin, pulled their heads in and played with discipline you’d expect from highly paid professionals.
At the same time the sharks were sprinting off in a disciplined solid line of defence. As so many penalties have been given up in this area, perhaps Flanagan has the team focused on this. I can’t recall Fifita being so disciplined ever. It should be a focus of all teams given it is 2018- the year of the disciplining.
The dogs regathered, putting the shark under the pump, whose discipline went out the window (or was it cynical play?) and copped 5 straight penalties and their fairs fair warning of a sinning. So after pushing the envelope, they pulled their heads in.
It’s understandable that a team under attack, where the refs mostly blow their whistle, either get a bit rattled, or give away cynical penalties. It seems after 5 the refs suspect the later.
Conspiracy and paranoia yes, built on isolating facts from circumstances, confirmational bias, and passion, the later especially when it involves the dogs.

Not quite exactly the same as last week, Mbye’s chest was more 5 degrees SWS, which renders the refs inconsistent by degrees

Well said Northy, but surely Souths couldn’t play like that again if they tried.
