Broken play.
You have to have players who have the intuitive skills and speed to take the opportunities in broken play. The ABs are masters of broken play. We did not have the defensive players or structure to keep them at bay.
It is not the end of the world.
Rennie’s true mettle will need to be up to the mark. To get out of this situation with honour will be a fantastic achievement.
I do not doubt our players commitment. They need their leaders to step up against a superb AB outfit who are playing with great confidence.

Read GJ comments. He sums it up rather well. I never compared Hooper to Pocock.
Personal insults don’t contribute much to the debate.
I thought this was the first time I have seen him really staying focused and he was very good.
Hope he keeps it up.

Michael Hooper shines in sky blue slaughter at the SCG

Am I crazy or did not the Boks show in the last WC what it means to have a real quality flanker like du Toit. But full marks to Hooper in this game where, for once, he played the right game and was totally focused.

Michael Hooper shines in sky blue slaughter at the SCG

I was very pleasantly surprised at Hooper’s performance as I have never considered him a top tier 7.
Ever. In this match he actually played as a 7 should instead of hanging back.
Whether or not he can keep this up remains to be seen but on the day it was an excellent game for him.

I hope that Warner did not make that remark and that it is the flight of fancy from some reporter. At the time, it was widely reported held that Warner had made personal remarks to de Kock about his family etc and that is what fired up de Kock to retaliate. Whatever the truth of the matter it is wiser for Warner to leave well enough alone.
He has done well up to now in the way he has handled himself and deserves respect for that but if he made these remarks he has been really foolish and leads credence to those who say he started the whole sorry mess in the first place.
Below is just one report from SA media at the time. There were many, many others along the same lines countered by opposite reports from the Australian media trying desperately to put the best spin on a sorrowful situation. It just inflamed the situation.
de Kock’s

“Warner’s stunning rampage in Durban was reportedly sparked by an alleged comment about his wife Candice by de Kock. Warner’s wife Candice Warner is currently in Durban.

A claim later emerged on Monday night that de Kock’s personal slur directed at Warner was in response to Warner first crossing the line with a series of personal attacks directed at the South African keeper as he was trying to save the game for South Africa.

Proteas team manager Mohammed Moosajee suggested Warner got personal in his sledging and “whatever happens out on the field, you giving something you’ve got to take it”.

The Proteas are privately alleging that Warner referenced de Kock’s sister and mother in some verbals.

Separate reports claim the South African camp also briefed local media that Warner called de Kock a “bush pig”.

A further report from South Africa’s Independent Media – the first news site to publish the leaked CCTV footage from Durban – claims Warner “led an hour long attack on the field” as de Kock and opener Aiden Markram frustrated the Aussie attack on their way to eventually winning the series opener on day five.

South African legend Graeme Smith also said Warner “crossed many personal boundaries”.

Warner not planning to clear the air with de Kock

Kolisi is pure class! Well done Springboks.

Springboks, Hamilton and Messi win big at Laureus awards

France could have gone all the way at the WC if their discipline had been better. But that is an old complaint about we French 😢
Long way to go yet but I live in infernal hope.

No excuses for England: Jones

Isn’t it just great when a potential new long term hero just bursts on the scene in such an unexpected manner? I suspect he is only going to get better and better because he clearly has the ”right stuff” and, more importantly, the support of the senior players who have been generous in their support.
Paine has done wonders as a Captain to have created this team attitude.
Thanks Brett for a timely article.
If only now we can find a solid all rounder and a consistent opener!

The summer of Marnus

I read the article and can only conclude there is some problem with memory lapses here and there. Especially insofar as South Africans are concerned.
To leave out Kallis and AB out is unbelievable. Even though Kallis was in the twilight of his career he still performed better than others included just on stats alone. Only in OZ to do you find this odd bias against him. He has legendary hero status in India where they really appreciate him.His problem is that he did everything quietly and without fanfare or flourish.
Some of those slip catches were spectacular but he just catches the ball and returns it. Once he just put it in his pocket and everyone was nonplussed as to what happened to the ball! Always downplaying the actual feat. His cover driving even he could not disguise. Arguably amongst the best ever seen against some of the fastest and best speed attacks to ever grace a cricket field.
In fact he could open for this side because he effectively had to that for years for South Africa because he would usually have to come in as they collapsed in the first few overs. Usually 2 or 3 or 4 down and he would have to stop the slide and start to build a total.
There is a very powerful case that he is, in fact, the best cricketer in all of history. He was a wonderful slip fielder and could hit the deck quite happily at 140kph while getting almost 300 wickets. Just a few steps as a run in as well. Imagine what he could have achieved if came in after solid openers and a good No 1?
And he could have gone on accumulating runs just as a batsman for another 3-5 years. I believe he should have and he probably would have been at top of the century makers.
Graeme Smith? Pick him before Warner, a no show outside of Australia.
AB? Never bats for the stats but to win or save the match yet his stats are better than the chosen one. He is a proven match winner in all conditions and types of cricket.
Philander I would not select. Outstanding at home, good elsewhere except India.

No room for Joe Root or Kane Williamson in my World Test XI of the decade

You forgot Bacchus Marsh

Selectors begin planning next baffling call on Joe Burns

I,too, have never forgotten that rash stroke in 2001. Or was it 2002?
On a more positive note I believe that the Actuarial Society of Australia may be seeking Hohn’s to speak at their annual dinner with the topic rumoured to be ”The use of statistics in Cricket team selection”.
Questions will not be permitted.

I’ll raise a Betoota Bitter to that 😁

The Liebke Ratings: Australia vs Pakistan first Test

Yes it is. 2 years at todays pace is more than enough time. Either you make the right impact or you don’t.If you are in a bigger mess than when you started then that is a significant KPI.
May not be a personal fault. Just the circumstances.
Either you break the web and eat the predators or move on before you become the prey.

When will Japan join the Rugby Championship?

Re Castle. Yes it was a comment wanting to know why she is still there because she cannot walk away from all the current mess without some liability.
You don’t think she may be relevant to any new proposed competition structure among the SH nations?
Clean out the stables is my first step.
I am old fashioned as most 80+ dodderers are.
Once, when I was still a young lad and thought I was bullet proof,I was fired from my CEO position of a large company and I was told that someone had to pay the price and I accepted that as totally logical. After all I had the final say in what happened. If I could not achieve my objectives then I was not good enough to be there. Right?

A lesson that I learnt well and led to me to greater things.

When will Japan join the Rugby Championship?

Thats close to a WC every 2 years!

I’m all for it if it could be made to work.

When will Japan join the Rugby Championship?

South Africa have long felt that they have been shortchanged by Australia and NZ. Not that they were the most loveable of bedfellows! Had chips on their shoulders for a long time.

This is a different era now.

When will Japan join the Rugby Championship?

Good article Brett.
What would happen to SANZAR if South Africa and Japan joined up with Europe?
Flying times (and directions) are better for SA and Japan.
Now that would create a financial giant of a competition with massive TV audiences.
They then should provide some of that largesse to the second tier teams.
Why is Castle still there?

When will Japan join the Rugby Championship?

Yes, agree.

Three minutes when Maro Itoje failed to win the medal he wanted

Consistent certainly. Hilarious, no. Just sad.

Three minutes when Maro Itoje failed to win the medal he wanted

You have heard the phrase ”flat track bully” from cricket? I suspect Itoje may just be more that than the guy you need next to you in the foxhole.

Three minutes when Maro Itoje failed to win the medal he wanted

Missing.

Three minutes when Maro Itoje failed to win the medal he wanted

Harry,
Agree EE is better than Bakkies was. I would not consider either of them. I am not an expert in Bok lock players but I do know this, of the many Bok locks I have seen there have been many who would be considered ahead of these two. Bakkies too slow around field and gave away a lot of penalties.

This is the greatest Springboks team of all time

Anything but snide mate.
Blunt, like Itoje.
Now that’s a snide comment.

The Roar's Rugby World Cup team of the tournament

The best do not go ”missing” i.e. perform below their best when it really counts. That is why I would not have selected Mo’lunga, Tuilagi(who practically disappeared in the final) and Itoje (who stood out primarily for his attitude to the 2nd place medal)
Malherbe will outscrum Sinckler any day of the week including finals day.

The Roar's Rugby World Cup team of the tournament

France certainly had the team to challenge as well. Only a stupid red card forced us out.
