The optimum way to do this would have been to award the points when all sanctions were handed down so that emotions wouldn’t get in the way of objective ruling e.g. your hypothetical about 8th being leapfrogged by 9th into the finals.
If this occurred when the ruling was handed down there would be plenty of time for the clubs to adjust and just get on with it.
The NRL must go further in remedying the Parra problem
A strong point on the draw, my understadnign was it was about player travel, but that surely can’t be the case when you end up playing teams home and away in the same third of the season.
As for the ‘what-ifs’, there aren’t many. You restore the points and that’s the end of the discussion. It is not about assuming what would have happened it’s about acting on the evidence that is before the NRL.
The NRL can’t act on what might have happened they can only act on what they know. They know Parra cheated during the period when they beat these teams.
They know these teams had an unfair disadvantage when playing them.
They should know that to lose to a team who cheats is unfair and that there should be proper compensation for the fact.
The NRL must go further in remedying the Parra problem
No I don’t think so, the idea of this sanction is to give back what has been taken away or wrongfully denied of someone through cheating.
The teams who lost to Parramatta when they were cheating get no justice or consolation for this, save for Parramatta having the points taken away, which isn’t much help to your own team’s chase for the finals.
To award the two points would be a restoration of what was taken away, the chance to win two points on a level playing field. Given there is no opportunity to replay these games, awarding the points seems fair.
The NRL must go further in remedying the Parra problem
Here’s my issue with that point. The NRL took a completely different approach to Melbourne’s breaches, therefore I don’t think their experience is admissible in this discussion. Having said that the decision to not award the premiership to Parramatta and Manly was criticised.
With a new administration comes the opportunity for a new approach, that is Greenberg should not be bound by every approach Gallop took to punishing teams for cap breaches.
Ultimately giving back the disadvantage that was taken away is fundamentally a fairer course of actions.
The NRL must go further in remedying the Parra problem
I’m sure that’s exactly what Norman was thinking when he was walking out of the courts.
What now for Corey Norman and the Eels?
I agree that the NRL needs to be seen to be taking action around poor player behaviour, but he didn’t actually consume these drugs. His defence has argued that he never intended to consume them either and that he was “holding them for a friend”.
Whether you believe that or not is another issue, but the NRL shouldn’t be acting on suspicion. If there is evidence before the NRL that he has consumed illicit substances than whatever comes of it is fair game, but until then it’s not a drug use issue.
What now for Corey Norman and the Eels?
Agreed, the fact of the matter the journos reporting on the ‘tape’ from the Telegraph were not sports journalists. Laura Banks who I remember more for arguing we needed to have a mass culling of Sharks to reclaim the ocean “our domain” as she called it.
It’s the type of writing that looks to target the individual over issues that aren’t illegal or for public scrutiny. Hopefully next season he is still at Parra and can do some good work to keep us talking about his footy, not his off-field life.
What now for Corey Norman and the Eels?
If he was charged with possession that’s all that should be considered. It is unfair to assume intent of possession, but he should have been wiser. A great talent and now he’s jeopardised his career
What now for Corey Norman and the Eels?
Though a bad look, he wasn’t actually charged for that. I have faith the judge was able to pass the judgement on the issue before him. Having said that the photo with unsavoury characters and the ‘tape’ coming out all stacked against him when making a case about “good character with remorse” as his barrister argued.
What now for Corey Norman and the Eels?
I don’t think he should be sacked either, there has to be a better way to deal with misguided youngsters in the NRL.
What now for Corey Norman and the Eels?
Simon, we may well agree on the seriousness of the crime. Why I think the NRL will take an approach that is more heavy handed is that there is a lot of external pressure on the sport to remove these issues from the game.
Despite there being – at this stage – no allegations of illegal behaviour from the sex tape saga, it hasn’t helped Norman’s case.
What now for Corey Norman and the Eels?
Agree in part Andrew, NRL and clubs will want him, but the Eels do have an image problem (as does the rest of the league).
I wouldn’t say it’s impossible for them to let him go in that event. With Marshal’s future uncertain – especially in the long-term – I think we could see him at St George.
Interesting point about a work visa in the UK and definitely worth food for thought.
With the Rugby stuff, I don’t think it’s likely, but it’s a funny old game Rugby League and I don’t want to rule it out completely.
One important thing around Norman’s case is I don’t think we’ve heard the last of it.
What now for Corey Norman and the Eels?
Here’s where I think the stats fail to tell the story of who was the goalkeeper of the season. Sorenson literally saved Melbourne City on multiple occasions and was probably their best player in the defensive third of the field.
You may remember the second Melbourne derby this year or the earlier match when Sydney and City played out a draw. In both of these games Sorenson stopped certain goals and I can only remember one howler he had, which was in the game against Victory they drew 2-2.
Galekovic is a great keeper and second-best IMO, but can’t say that he saved Adelaide with his on-field performances, whereas Sorenson did seem to.
Team of the season for A-League's best year yet
*CORRECTION, Del Pierre definitely plays for Melbourne Victory I forgot to change that to Alberto Aguilar before sending in.
Team of the season for A-League's best year yet
Solid article, but I do think the topic area has been discussed no end.
Hope to read more of your stuff here though!
FIFA made a mistake in choosing Qatar
Agreed, except I’d throw Popa into the mix because of where the Wanderers were last season.
They too had a mass exodus and there was pressure on the Wanderers coach after they went the first three games without a win.
Because of these factors and their overall ladder position I think it’s hard to go past him.
Who is the A-league coach of the year?
Can I also add the fact that premier’s plate was decided by just one point highlights that Popovic’s team were very close to achieving exactly what Adelaide did. Taking into account the Wanderers quantum leap from second last to second I think the plate victory is less of a strong point for Amor than some are making it out to be.
Who is the A-league coach of the year?
Hey guys just want to also say, my apologies for the grammar, it should have been much tighter. Every time I read a mistake it’s like having a pin stuck into me…
Who is the A-league coach of the year?
Most of that I agree with and I absolutely want him to stay, but he was already within the club structure at Adelaide as technical director.
Yes it was his first senior coaching role, but it was hardly a foreign area to him, which I think mitigates the idea that because it’s his first year as a coach he’s the best this season.
Who is the A-league coach of the year?
One bad injury, Carl Valeri… If your team is that dependent on one player you can’t really say he’s doen an outstanding job. As for the Piovacarri example, yes it was bad, but every team has a sub-par foreigner (possible exception MVFC), I think recruitment should only be considered an error if the squad didn’t have quality cover for the position ergo Sydney FC with a striker. Popovic had both Bridge and Santalab.
Who is the A-league coach of the year?
Actually Western Sydney are my least favourite team, if there was anyone I would want to see lose the title it would be them.
I’ve been a member of Sydney FC (and the Cove) for the last five years.
Who is the A-league coach of the year?
As a Sydney FC supporter I can confidently say Graham Arnold was far off the coach of the year. Having said that anyone insisting that he should be sack is being a bit too abrasive in my opinion.
Who is the A-league coach of the year?
Sorry about that one 😛
Amor has done well, but if you consider that it was under Amor that they started poorly then I think it becomes harder to give him as much credit as people are for turning their season around.
Who is the A-league coach of the year?
Couldn’t agree more.
