That could be his reasoning, but if he comes over here and pushes his way into the top 3 looseheads for the Wallabies than he has improved our depth, even if it doesn’t take us beyond New Zealand it does take as closer to them. But players also often benefit from a change in environment and it’s entirely possible that by making the move he’ll take the next step up in his career and be playing better than he ever was in New Zealand. At 30 he’s coming into his prime as a prop so it’s not at all unlikely.
That said I think you’ll find his motivation is more complex than “not being able to cut it in NZ”. His brother lives in Brisbane and I believe his parents are also based in SEQ. His reasoning in coming to Brisbane was as much about those family ties as anything else:
“More than that, he wanted the rhythm and stability of a settled family unit. His brother William was already living in Brisbane with his family.
Hodgman and wife Serene have settled into a home in Brisbane’s south-western suburbs with their three kids. His parents have now joined them.
“It was time for a change for me and my family. I’d been at the Blues for a long time. Any new club you go to is different and somewhere you keep growing and learning,” Hodgman said. ”

Aussie rugby is shooting itself in the foot over its recruitment strategy. It must change to give Wallabies a RWC hope

I disagree. There aren’t the locally developed props with that level of experience available right now and it’s important to have those experienced players in the squad to help bring through the young guys like Nonggorr, De Lutiis and King. Bringing in that experience now will absolutely help solve the problem in the future by helping us properly develop our front row talent as it’s coming through. Beyond that, the fact that he is immediately wallaby eligible means his signing is not weakening the available talent pool for the wallabies and is instead strengthening it.

Worth noting that Hodgman is already eligible for the wallabies and open to selection, so his recruitment to the Reds adds depth and experience to our loose head options.

Thanks for all your hard work covering the NRC this season Brett, have loved both the comp and the coverage.

NRC report card: The thumbs up-thumbs down review

There was a program put out online, don’t know if they were handing out printed copies though.

Good article Brett. Has there been any more word on online streaming for the games that won’t be televised?

NRC update part 1: Queensland, Perth, Melbourne and Canberra

Great write up Brett.

Do you have any more info on the potential for online streaming of games not televised? You mention the Rising are looking at streaming games and the Reds already stream 1 club game a week so I don’t see why the wouldn’t put that towards city and country. Hopefully nothing in the Fox deal will block them from streaming the games not televised.

Sounds about right, whichever way he decides to go I think he might end up starting one of Skelton and Palu with the other on the bench, so as not to sacrifice too much in the lineout, having them both on at once. That said if they were both on the bench the thought of that much meat coming on with 20 to go to tear through tired defences is pretty exciting.

Steve Moore would make damn near every international team, except for maybe the Boks.

Drafts have the alternate problem of introducing tanking strategies from teams whose seasons are over. having the extra games for this comp played pre season with the rest of the games being super rugby ones does help limit this but may still cause issues. The larger problem with any draft system though is the difficulty introducing one where there is so much competition for young talent from outside the code (NRL, Europe, Japan, etc). The sports that currently run drafts successfully (AFL, NFL, etc) don’t really have to worry about players going elsewhere, they probably won’t get as much money and if they do go there’s always someone else to step in. I do really like the idea of some kind of modified draft system, particularly at NRC level but I’ve no idea how to do it in that competitive environment.

Not opposed to the idea itself but salary cap exemptions as a prize is an awful idea. Aside from the logistics of managing salaries under a variable cap, it creates imbalance in the competition. By giving the strongest sides more room in the cap it ensure the strong get stronger and the weak get weaker. Leave it as a cash prize, salary caps are about keeping the competition balanced and should only be modified with an to improving that balance.

He come out and said it was the reason, though he also thinks it’s a great thing for the game, just that he can’t spend half the year travelling round the world to then come home and have to spend his time based in Sydney.

The Queensland Reds must sack Richard Graham

Yeah but It somewhat depends where they put him. You can’t really force assistant coaches on a head coach and maybe the NRC roles are seen as an extension on that. But at the same time RG can’t be dictating hiring decisions across the organisation and I’m sure he knows that.

Even if that weren’t directly looking to move O’Connor into the reds role it would be insane not to try and find a place for him somewhere. He left the Sevens program because the new professional base is in Sydney and he doesn’t want to move away from QLD. I doubt there is anyone in Australia with a better grasp of the young talent running around about to come of age, not to mention the number of current super rugby players he coached on there way up the ladder.

The Queensland Reds must sack Richard Graham

That’s the issue, most of the options are tied up with world cup campaigns and won’t be available till 2016. If they wanted to go left of field then Michael O’Connor the 7’s coach is free and brings a hell of a lot to the table in terms of talent identification and selection, but he’s been coaching 7’s for 5 years and I don’t know how much 15’s experience he has as a coach. Would be great if the QRU had him coaching an NRC team though, with an eye to coaching the reds later.

The Queensland Reds must sack Richard Graham

Probably don’t need to worry then.

With another couple of games the year we play the Asian side (assuming the final side is in Asia). Argentinean games aren’t at a completely useless time either, usually airing mid-morning here. It would help if the SARU would agree to schedule more afternoon games to air round 9:30/10:00pm here. Not sure what the opinion of afternoon games is there, but they’ve always been well received by crowds and fans here, good day out at the game and more chance of a dry track for clean running rugby.
