Picked Bairstow as more of a pure batter who could keep, as opposed to his wicketkeeping credentials per say. With regrads to being the best keeper, Ben Foakes would have been my pick.

Fair point, though I did not quite pick Stokes for his impact as a player specifically. My pick for him was more for his captaincy, because how he single handedly changed England’s mindset and turned things around to them to becoming competitive and feared again.

True, but Williamson only played around 7 matches in the entire cycle as he was out with injuries and most of his performances came at home. I am a big fan of Williamson and while may not have made an honourable mention (I did mention him in the Joe Root section as a strong contender)

Fair point, did not pick Bairstow as a strict keeper just a batter who could keep in the XI. If I were to pick a strong technical keeper, I wouldnt look further than Ben Foakes! only reason why I picked Dimuth as the VC was because of his impact in the country(not just the cricket team!)

Guys- I think we are being unfair to Chris Silverwood here. The man is so good that he still has no signs of being sacked despite such an abysmal performance, at least give him kudos for that 😂 .

On a serious note though, at this rate Silverwood would be lucky to coach a CPL team…

I think red and white ball games are quite different in nature, Butlers natural game is the one we saw in T20 World Cup but we also saw what that approach does with Rishabh Pant’s outing in Johanesburg. Just do not think he is a multi-format keeper/batsman like Gilchrist or even Mark Boucher were (hence the comparison, the ability to adapt to every format as opposed to stats or reputation)

To simplify and in other words, Sachin’s average of 40.25 in Pakistan against the likes of Akram, Waqar and Akhtar is better than his average of 47 in the West Indies against the likes of Cuffy or Sanford….Which makes the entire lets rely solely on average a bit naive.

Apologies for any undue aggression from my end, I was just a bit taken aback that people are quick to criticise the list in a rather condescending manner (which is frankly just a superficial element of this article), instead the point of the article was to simply remember the great test openers, regardless of average or era as in our current playing generation there is a noticeable lack of quality test opening pairs . I simply put it in a list format as it helps me write well, it is not, by any means meant to undermine or unjustly glorify any players. The original title of this article was in fact, called ” My top 10″ and I had even almost submitted it with the title ” Greatest opening pairs in history”.

I think the original title was something like “Top test opening pairs in history”, but even if it was a top 10 list, it should have been “my top 10” to distinguish between subjectivity and objectivity. Like you said, the point of this article was to remember them, regardless of the rank (which is just a superficial element of the article)

You are entitled to your opinion, just as I am mine. Like I say here before though , a person with good cricketing knowledge will know that averages are often just half the story, there are other factors that one should consider- Quality of the pitches, quality of opposition bowlers, team culture, funds at disposal for those cricketers and finally, the ratio of home:away matches. With regards to longevity, what makes you think it is easy to be consistent openers at international level full of hostile bowlers and pitches. I am fully aware it Lawry and not Lowry, but that is due to autocorrect which has now been edited. Nonetheless, it is an opinion and if you do not agree then it is fine. Brilliant, I actually thought about that when I mentioned Viv Richards – it is something that I will make another article about when I have time . A big psychological advantage in knowing you have a great no 3 should you fail.

Perfectly fine and a reasonable rationale! I have seen a lot more of Hayden and Langer than Slater and Taylor, so perhaps it is a bit of unconscious bias there! Nonetheless, this was meant to be more or less remembering the best opening pairs in history and not a definite list haha
