August 30, 2020: Melbourne City close out the tumultuous and exhilarating A-League hub against premiers Sydney FC on the last Sunday of the season.
In an odd yet interesting sight, Western United fronted AAMI Park as the home side against the Melbourne Victory in a restricted capacity stadium where both sides put on a clinic, exciting the 7000 fans despite the 0-0 result.
It was the A-League game that captivated the football nation and typified the elegant quality of football on display this season.
In typical Melbourne weather – a bright summer day followed by heavy rain – and with the AAMI Park floodlights focusing on the two sides, Melbourne Victory opened their season against Warren Moon’s Brisbane Roar.
Western United hosted Adelaide United in this year’s season opener, and in a cagey and generally end-to-end affair neither side was able to find the back of the net, with Western United’s largely counterattacking style unable to satisfy the home fans with a victory.
Victoria has long been confronted with an innumerable amount of issues over recent months and this extends to its three professional football sides.
