If the Hawks somehow found their way to the GF against the Tigers, I would be shocked. But I wouldn’t be shocked if we beat the Tigers in a poor-man’s 2008 type of result if we got there. Richmond just aren’t a team that compares favorably to any other back to back team I can think of.

Will Richmond's challenger please stand up?

Rioli’s retirement is essentially an injury and he would 100% be a walk up start on any team. Including Rioli (who was injured most of the year before retirement) our injury/retirement/suspension list reads pretty poorly – Rioli, Birchall, Sicily, McEvoy, Howe. All are guaranteed starters.

PTS – please tell me you aren’t quoting a Melbourne player’s philosophy on wining finals matches to make your argument? If there is any team that knows a thing or two about what winning finals is about over the last say, I don’t know, pick a period – 5 years 10 years, 30 years, 50 years – it is the Hawks. Collingwood is relevant in the media only. Gone in week one of the finals, no question.

My suspicion is that after a second proper preseason next year, O’Meara will break out and be a superstar of the competition. He will have complete fitness and complete confidence and it will be a beautiful thing to see.

Six hot takes from AFL Round 21

And while I’m at it, if there was ever a team I hold zero fear of as a Hawks supporter it is the pies. Have you even beaten us since the 2011 prelim? The media beat up of how good the pies allegedly are is comical. I am always nervous against the Cats, Swans and bizarrely the Tigers (somehow they managed to beat us a few times during the recent halcyon years of 2011-2016). But the pies I chalk up a win to automatically. Now I remember – you beat us last year after we were up by 40-odd points, took our foot off the gas and choked hugely. Yep, I guess there had to be one.

So you remind yourself that they also easily beat the Pies?

Let’s jot get too carried away. We are not a realistic premiership threat this year but I can definitely see a scenario where we get a player or two in the off-season and become a real challenger next year. I feel sorry for Carlton given their perpetual rebuild, which is probably the ultimate insult to their supporters.

Beams is an A+ midfielder no question and easily in the top 10 midfielders in the game. Maybe an injury-effected year in 2014, but 2012 and 2013 were seasons to behold. Brisbane pulled off a huge win with him and the Pies are going to be bottom four in 2015 now.

Lions and Power the big winners in the AFL's trading period

It is not a specialist position in that they would also play another position on the offense, mostly running back. I would love to see Hayne make it. It would be awesome and great to ram home to all my Yankee mates. But Jeez, it is going to be tough. Running back is a really tough role as there is nowhere near the 10m of space afforded on the NFL field. But maybe he is that talented and that hard-working. Beat of luck and surely my team (Jets) can find a place for you in their roster!

Jarryd Hayne can fly high in the rarefied air of the NFL

Your comment about it being more worrying that an All-Australian defender and former #2 draft pick gets to go to the reigning premier is staggering in its ignorance. You do realize that we lost Buddy last year, right? That we were the team you got him from? You do know that, don’t you? So we replaced part of our $1.1m offer to him with Frawley. And as for O’Rourke, that is a gamble. Trengove is a former #2 draft pick. Who cares what number they were drafted. GWS didn’t play him much at all and doesn’t rate him. That we did these deals quickly probably speaks to the quality of our football department. That these players want to come to Hawthorn also probably speaks to the quality of the football department. And that we won back to back flags definitely speaks to the quality of our football department. Please don’t mention the Hawks in the same breath as either COLA or the AFL’a shocking decision re the Swans trading players.

The Swans played by COLA rules, so why are they being punished?

I don’t think CoLA is needed any more for the Swans. It certainly was for a quite a while but has now served its purpose, demonstrated by its removal in two seasons’ time. But to not allow the club to trade in the meantime is disgusting. It is more unfair than the COLA could ever be perceived by any one-eyed anti-Swans supporter. Sydney has cleared a lot of salary cap space in lasts years and now this year, and while CoLA would help get better players than otherwise, not being able to trade will cause irreparable damage. If I was the new Richard Colless, I would be suing the AFL before Gillon had hung up the phone. In one way, I would have loved to have seen this happen to Hawthorn while Jeff was still president….

Didn’t Burgs also put us back in front in the prelim in 2012 in the last minutes against the Crows with a burst from the centre square? I hate that we lost Josh Kennedy, but hey, if you had to get someone for him Burgoyne is about as good as it gets. Would never trade him and can’t believe Port did.

Will Burgoyne finish his career in the AFL Hall of Fame?

Speaking of (forgive my Hawks bias for a moment) players who somehow don’t get the recognition they deserve, even though they have a Brownlow – Shane Crawford. Crawf is already in the Hall of Fame and rightfully so. He was one of the first to take professionalism to the modern era. Many people (ie I have heard it several time buy can’t remember from whom) have said he was the best prepared player going around. And he dominated. 4 B&Fs, 4 AAs, a premiership in his final game and a Brownlow to boot. He finished second and third a couple of times for good measure too. This isn’t a reason he should be inducted per we, but I’m pretty sure from 2002 to early 2004, Hawks supporters were turning up to watch Crawf. He was our hope at that time. Just before Hodgey and Mitch came on. And as for Mitch, he is a lock for the Hall of Fame. He is one of the 10 players of his generation. By the end of his career he will be close to 350 games, probably have a retroactively awarded Brownlow (sorry Jobe) to go with his 4 B&Fs and 4 premierships (too optimistic ;-P).

I agree Pope, ’76 with Crimmo isn hospital is the greatest. There will never be a more powerful image of Hawthorn than that photo with Crimmo and the premiership cup in hospital in ’76. I could never imagine supporting any other club, even from 15,000 miles away. Go Hawks!

2014 flag arguably Hawthorn's best

Ignorant of the facts? Please explain these facts Maggie? I am certain you can’t do the math, otherwise you would never have posted that garbage. People should accept COLA as it is, and has been for ages, part of the rules. But to say Mango is ignorant of the facts just highlights that it is you who are ignorant of the said facts.
