Great article Scott,
I couldn’t agree more, if rebels start winning, Melbourne will follow, that’s a given.
East coast makes a few good points as well though.
If buns are seats, money can be made.
In Sydney, we want the Rebels and their team could be great.
It would be great to see them competitive early on and get a crowd behind them
'All fun would disappear' - as critics 'dance on Rebels’ grave', for a club and its fans a precipice looms
Bobby,
You’re a goose, it’s a guy who wants to stay.
Stick with NRL or get behind the younger generation who want rugby to thrive
RWC heartache, Eddie and what's next: In demand young gun delivers biggest clue yet on future
RA has picked up the licence for nothing.
The debt is with liquidation.
If RA can stop a bleed of costs it might be worthwhile.
History would suggest they’ll cut them, however, perhaps and it’s a very big maybe, perhaps they keep the Rebels for 2025.
I doubt it though
Rebels put aside off-field drama to deliver Super Rugby 'statement' win over Tahs as recruits stand up
DC and Kiss,
Save Australian rugby.
Foote has a team, but they won’t play in 25.
Cron has a squad, but none have any empathy for emotion.
And Larkham has a team, but hasn’t won.
Turn up the dial or go home.
Grassroots rugby has have enough.
We want to love, but couldn’t care less anymore.
SRP trial teams: Tahs, Rebels name big guns, Reds lose O'Connor as Donno starts for Force
I hear you Jeznez,
It seems good timing.
They need the Rebels for the Lions tour, as it’s locked in.
It just seems like there is a move to ensure all aren’t going to find themselves.
I also don’t necessarily, have an issue with it, as there are bloated costs everywhere in Rugby and I’d love to see what Pete Horne can do.
Either make Super Rugby home and away or do a National comp.
It’s a pretty simple equation
Rebels told they will play Super Rugby in 2024 but future on shaky ground as voluntary administration looms
This looks to be very interesting for RA.
If the Rebels and maybe, the Brumbies, go into administration RA can pick them at 10c in the dollar.
They then have Tahs, Rebels and Brums, under a “centralised model”.
I’m not saying it’s planned by any stretch.
But a strange set of circumstances is all
Rebels told they will play Super Rugby in 2024 but future on shaky ground as voluntary administration looms
I think this is the best appointment RA have made in years.
Not necessarily for the person themselves (Schmidt) but the term of the contract as well.
No Australian coach, is capable of pulling Australian Rugby out of this mess the EJ left.
The process with Horne and Waugh has been well thought out.
It appears JS is the same.
He may well bring the rugby family back together with some “solid” performances.
But the two year window is fantastic if he can get a Larkham, DC, Kiss, Foote and Cron on the same page.
It’s going to take time though, it’s 1 year of preparation before the Lions, but at least it’s been done with some due diligence
'Not a hit and run': Schmidt explains short-term deal and why he 'surprised' himself by taking Wallabies job
Great article,
Love a bit of positive articles about rugby.
I reckon you nailed it as well.
I reckon Matt Burke was up there as well in 1999, however, I can see why can’t crack the list, possibly Grant Fox is up for debate as well.
All those listed kicked in clutch moments.
The men from the boys so to speak
Masters of the Air: The ten greatest kickers in rugby history - from All Blacks 'wizard' to the Scot who changed the game
As much as I’d love to have an Aussie appointed, I just can’t see who could it.
Larkham has to get a crack some point, but Schmidt took Ireland from an also ran, to No. 1.
He also did that under Nucifora and with assistance from Horne.
Weather RA can actually do a centralised model is a different argument and, probably, a long way off.
At least this is a thoughtful process with a guy with runs on the board.
I still think what EJ did will take a long time to fix, but who knows.
If I had to pick a Kiwi coach, I’d take Schmidt over Deans and Rennie, there is no one else
Exclusive: Wallabies to turn to Kiwi Schmidt as Eddie Jones' replacement
All of these comments are interesting.
Based on my research, Green has a better average in test cricket, than Bancroft, Harris and Renshaw.
Moving smith up, might not work, however, none of these three have demanded a spot surely?
The two factors that’ll decide whether Smith’s opening gambit is a surprising success or ill-conceived failure
You have to take you’re hat off to Pakistan PS.
They have been having a real crack, despite some best players choosing white ball.
If the fielding was better, they would certainly be one apiece or even 2-1.
South Africa, in particular, have treated test cricket with disdain.
They beat India and then send 3rd string team to NZ.
It’s time for Test Cricket windows, how???!
Better brains than mine.
To Pakistan, we give thanks.
Test Mortem: Age just a number for 'Dads Army' Aussies, Cummins the ultimate skeleton key, MCG from worst to best
I didn’t know that JD.
I don’t think it would be hard to achieve.
The top 6 teams from Japanese league
5 Aus teams and Drua
5 Kiwi teams and Moana
Perhaps it’s conference with each team playing each other once.
Top 2 of each goes through to some kind of semi format.
It would be a minimum of 5 extra games per season and give exposure to those who aren’t playing internationally.
I just don’t think it’s difficult
Japanese rugby is a wolf in sheep’s clothing - Australia and NZ must align their strategy or they'll both be eaten
Couldn’t agree more mate,
The content is to short.
To create another competition “Nationally” is an option, however, franchises playing other franchises that are existing makes much more sense, in a proper competition.
Even as simple as:
Top 4 NZ
Top 3 Aus
Top 3 League one
Drua
And maybe a playoff for Moana and the best of the rest.
A knock out comp over 3-5 weeks creates depth as well.
It won’t happen though
Japanese rugby is a wolf in sheep’s clothing - Australia and NZ must align their strategy or they'll both be eaten
Good read Brendan,
I must say, I can’t understand why NZ and AUS haven’t looked at some kind of venture after super rugby before.
It makes sense to tap into a market, give more meaningful games and create more broadcast revenue across more markets.
It won’t happen because it’s sensible
Japanese rugby is a wolf in sheep’s clothing - Australia and NZ must align their strategy or they'll both be eaten
Agreed Brendan,
Why are crowds as there lowest attendance ever.
This article is about Australian Rugby,
Read it again.
If the Brumbies pack out stadiums next, I’m more than happy to meet my words,
RA has failed immensely, so has every single province.
It’s not rocket science, the issue will be around a $80 loan and how it spent?
Can RA be trusted?
No
Can the provinces?
No
If RA give a budget and “full control” and the provinces agree (albeit for a period of time) then when have we got to lose.
In short:
Brumbies don’t make money
Waratahs don’t make money
Reds don’t make money
Rebels don’t make money
Force don’t make money.
This article is about being fiscally responsible.
Give a “New Option” a go.
Under a centralised model, overheads are reduced.
It’s simple business.
Super Rugby clubs want a handout? That's a disgrace, the game is already broke
Wow, there’s a lot of negativity about this article.
Most have said “super Rugby clubs are owed the money promised”.
No, that is incorrect, these numbers were reduced during Covid, what has occurred is that RA chose not to place these back in place.
Secondly, I am not, for a second advising the Ballymore Asset should be based to RA.
A Centralised Model is for staff and resources.
If QLD took out Ballymore, they too would be in deficit.
There is no debate. Rugby Australia has failed immensely time after time, but so have the states.
Thirdly, fan engagement has been so poor, despite any handouts to super rugby clubs.
The point is, RA have a loan:
– [ ] Spend it wisely
– [ ] On developing Women’s rugby
– [ ] Reduce overheads at provincial level (happy for QLD to keep their assets)
– [ ] Give complete control to a “Brand New HP manager with complete control
That means, the board stays out of it.
SPR clubs have needed to be bailed out, everyone of them, at some stage.
Give the HP Manager complete control, stop asking for funds when they have not been re-instated since Covid.
Rugby Australia needs to move forward, otherwise we will do the same again.
Give power to one person:
High Performance Manager.
Give them 5 years and see
Super Rugby clubs want a handout? That's a disgrace, the game is already broke
I admire QC’s comments.
I also agree with most of the comments below, it was almost as though EJ came in to make a point.
He clearly had a plan for Japan and he clearly, ditched the old for the young.
QC, in particular deserved a spot, even as a mentor.
Unfortunately, he will be too old for 2027.
For those who are saying “not in the top 10”, keep drinking the same coolade..
Morals, outweighs ability everyday of the week.
EJ, put RA behind by a further 5 years

This is. Good read Tony,
Enjoyed.
The biggest issue with code hoppers is defence.
Both have extraordinary attacking skills, but defence will be key.
NRL is one on one tackling, however, Union is more evasive.
Both RTS and Benji Marshall struggled in defence immensely in Union.
Especially RTS. Even SBW had a couple of years to develop.
In attack, both will learn the intricacies, defence will be a major factor.
For the purpose of the article though, both could be “All Australian”, but Marky would need to stay in NRL beyond 2 years and Joey would need to return at the completion of his RA stint
As young stars switch places, are 'Marky' and 'Joey' a chance to be 'All-Australian' rugby dual internationals?
Hahaha

It’s now time to move on from EJ.
What an absolute debacle.
I supported his initial placement, however, I was so wrong.
He has clearly planned this out, what a disgrace.
In November I spoke with a Kiwi before he resigned and he asked if “I reckoned he’d go”
I replied “No, because if he did, it what show him as complete mongrel and a lier”.
“If he does, he will never be allowed in Australia again”
I agree with SBW, “no apology required”.
We move on.
Thanks Eddie, you have proven yourself to be a person of lowest integrity and morals.
It’s great to have you out of Australian Rugby
'I feel terrible, but...: Defiant Eddie Jones unveiled as Japan coach, JRFU reveals their version of THAT Zoom call
Let’s take Waugh at his word for a moment
SH rugby is stuffed without Japan.
There is some kind of MOU, now what does that mean.
Is it a 3rd tier competition, is it let EJ take the reins behind more financial muscle from Japan?
Let’s put this in perspective.
1 owner of the broadcast rights
2 other options are behind paywalls only, if they’re interested
3 Japan v Australia A would win, this is not about depth or talent, it is the worst coaching ever.
EJ effectively swapped a grenade for a time bomb and had plans to defect all along:
When Japan beet Australia again and again, he will look like a genius.
The only difference is, Wallabies are now tier two with Japan, but EJ will love it.
'Good relationship': RA boss plays down Jones' betrayal, welcomes Tests against Brave Blossoms
BBL is now in the world of Super Rugby.
Off the field decisions control the product.
I can’t imagine The Chappell’s or Clive Lloyd or any of the past greats allowing this.
Even modern greats such as Michael Vaughn are putting this down.
What a shame, I loved rugby and cricket, now they’re both gone
'It's bouncing ridiculously': BBL clash ends in farce as Geelong pitch deemed unsafe just six overs in
The bloke who called EJ a traitor and was forced to apologise, needs to retract it immediately.
EJ was paid from RFU in England and took the job for Australia knowing full well he was leaving in under 12 months.
He has moved his family permanently in 3 weeks after resignation.
That’s a difficult task if he didn’t already know.
EJ, please never come back, when touring with Japan the word “Traitor” will be sung for the stands.
But it will get bums on seats.
Eddie Jones set to be appointed Japan coach six weeks after walking out on Wallabies
Agreed East Coast,
The season is way too short. Surely you can create a home and away, split rounds for tests.
It’s just simple.
If not that, keep SRP as is and have a “Heineken cup” style with top three NZ, AUS and Japan.
It seems simple, but it never seems to happen
