This is the last instalment of a five-part series on rugby league and its myriad issues.
I have already discussed the ideas of stadiums, reducing or relocating teams and funding for the NRL, but for the fourth installment of the series I’d like to make a right-hand turn from the general administration of the game and talk about the handling of players – specifically the off-season from hell that is still […]
Following on from my two previous articles, ‘Be smart about stadiums’ and ‘Reduce or relocate teams,’ the driving financial forces behind the NRL also need to be addressed.
Yesterday I published an article on rugby league stadiums, and suggested that teams should combine their efforts to build a few good stadiums to reduce costs and provide better facilities for players and fans alike.
Australia will win 4-0, 4-1, 3-1. Australia should win 14-0. These are just some of the punter predictions posted below the Socceroos Facebook post announcing the starting XI to play Uzbekistan in the Asian Cup Round of 16.
Agreed. The game is still being run as if it’s an amateur comp, only looking a few years ahead at a time. The strong tribalism within the culture also acts as a major roadblock to change.
Fixing rugby league step one of five: Be smart about stadiums
This is a great idea, although I don’t think NewsCorp would let it happen with its fingers in so many pies…
Fixing rugby league step one of five: Be smart about stadiums
Definitely agree. One of my followup articles will be on the NRL selling the soul of rugby league to Channel Nine, and having awful timeslots will certainly feature!

Feel free to offer some criticism?
The Socceroos are not as good as we like to think they are, and that’s okay
Haha thanks StuM…. this was never intended to be a list of suggestions for improvement. My personal list for that is extremely long and does not get a mention in this article. It’s merely looking to drum up support for a team that in its present state simply isn’t that good, and we should be celebrating every small success that comes our way. I also deliberately pointed out at the end that I still think we should criticise poor performances!

Just saw today that Jamie McLaren is looking at coming home again….
But yeah I grew up watching a dominant Australian cricket team and the Wallabies at their peak in the early 2000’s and the taste of international dominance is certainly sweet.

I agree with everything you’ve said. I recently heard from a friend from Campbelltown who said Rugby League is experiencing significant regression at a local level. Where there were once several comps in Sydney with multiple competitions, they’ve all had to merge into one massive competition because of dwindling numbers.
My major concern lies with the struggles our national youth teams have had though. The Olyroos failed to qualify for the last two Olympic Games and haven’t progressed from the group stage of the last two U23 Asian Cups. So I worry the pain will continue for a little while longer, however a 48 million team World Cup certainly makes qualifying for that easier.

I’d certainly love to be world beaters one day!

You’ve hit the nail on the head, At Work.
The Socceroos are not as good as we like to think they are, and that’s okay
Thanks Paul, what I meant was that the stadiums are good because they’re right in the fans backyards, but the actual facilities are thoroughly amateur. Allowing room for expansion of stadiums for big events is certainly something to be considered. Obviously all of these ideas would never be implemented because it’d be far too immense and the NRL is still being run like it’s an amateur competition. I’m also working on an alternative article that will suggest relocating/reducing the number of teams…
