Which AFL players fly under the radar?
Every team has that one player. That one player that nobody rates or is thought to be overrated. I'm not talking about the kids…

I don’t think there is a specific number that equates to fairness rather a case by case scenario.
The travel factor is the biggest issue.
Time in the air or airports which impacts on the recovery time as a whole and that is without looking at the negative impacts of flying on athletic performance, of which there are numerous studies supporting.
If you use M44’s example of crowd dominance as “true home ground advantage” then surely you would have to admit that Richmond then see more than the games against interstate opponents as “true home ground advantage” games.
Richmond would have crowd dominance against teams like St Kilda, NM etc.
Personally I think the fixture can be manipulated to create a fairer competition.
Clubs that travel the least play the games in Alice, Darwin or Tassie.
It's Richmond's league now: The unstoppable Tigers confirm their place in history
What a load of sh@$
If you agree that the interstate teams get such an advantage then you must also concede that they must also be disadvantaged in their away games, ergo mitigating the advantage across a season.
Also should be noted, WC, Fremantle, Adelaide and Port Adelaide get 10 “true home ground advantages” as they play each other on neutral ground.
So in 2018 Fremantle had a mere 4 more “true home ground advantages” than Richmond despite being on a plane 60 more hours across the season.
The AFL is ultimately a handicap race.
Surely you would rather win in a fair league?

Let it go Jonboy!
You’ve been harping on about how good Kelly is all week.
Not your club so you don’t have to worry about whether it was a good trade or not.
Stop being so god damn salty..
AFL trade news: Tim Kelly, Eddie Betts, Mason Cox and more
Don’t need another small forward.
Cameron, Petch and everyone seems to forget about Venables who spent most of the year recovering from his nasty concussion.

Way too early to call!
This could go either way, in terms of who wins this trade.
I don’t think anyone necessarily wins it at the moment.
Geelong have lost their 2nd best player in a time where they are in the premiership window, especially damaging with the aging stars that they have.
WC have gained a great player and something that they needed but have they given too much away for it..
I think there are two measures for it to have been a success for WC regardless of what happens at Geelong.
If WC win a flag with Kelly on their list, it is a win.
If when the inevitable drop off happens they don’t drop for long or far then the Kelly trade has to be seen as a success for WC.
Who'll end up really winning the Tim Kelly trade?
When they got Lynch?
Hope it works out as well for us..
AFL trade news: Mason Cox, Orazio Fantasia, Tom Papley, Ollie Wines and more
Agree Matti, happy with that.
Seems to be air compo to me, dependent on the later pick swaps.

Respectfully disagree berrlins, I think that Kelly is a must get.
Our engine room was our area of weakness this year. Whilst a fit NN makes a huge difference Kelly should be a priority.
Adding Kelly sures up our weakest line and makes WC a scarily balanced team in 2020.

What do you consider to be fair compensation for Kelly, Aransan?
Carlton's big fish could help Tim Kelly become an Eagle
He’s out of contract though?
They won’t keep him.
Whether he ends up at Freo or WC is yet to be seen but he won’t be at Geelong.
Carlton's big fish could help Tim Kelly become an Eagle
Considering they are both contracted it is a different story..
But if we are playing the how much are they worth game.

Brander played for the Bendigo Pioneers, not Geelong Falcons.
Was at GG in their Strength and Conditioning when Brander was there, great kid, had a few problems with his hamstrings in his final year.

Unless you were a professional athlete during your time racking up long haul flights your personal experience doesn’t count for much.
There are numerous scientific papers on the negative effects of flying and athletic performance. Travel fatigue, exposure to mild hypoxia, disruptions of routines, plane noise, prolonged sitting all of which can effect athletes for up to 2-3 days after travel when 2 or more time zones are crossed. These might sound like small things but in a competition is close as ours is a team being off by very little can make a large difference.
It isn’t the flight time alone, although that is the most measurable time.
The waiting in the airports for planes, especially if they are delayed.
Time to and from the airport.
I understand that the layout of our league means that things are difficult geographically with a large portion of the teams located in Victoria but an extra home game for the interstate sides slightly mitigates the extraordinary travel disadvantage.
Even small changes to the fixture, like getting Collingwood or Richmond to fly to Tasmania to play instead of giving it to teams that are already flying 4 times as many hours could slightly change the evenness of the competition.
The AFL is only interested in what makes the most amount of money, which means that we have a handicapped competition.
Geelong and Richmond set the standard for excellence, precisely a decade apart
That’s the point though isn’t it, the clubs with the least amount of travelling should be adding to theirs.
It shouldn’t be those clubs doing the extra travelling.
North Melbourne 37 hours on a plane, Melbourne 36 hours on a plane in 2019.
“Unless you’re also proposing that the clubs with extra home games give up the revenue from those games.”
Sure, I can’t see why they couldn’t.
I am talking about the inequality of the travel on some teams and how to possibly mitigate it to create a fair competition.
I can’t see how anyone doesn’t want a fair competition..
Geelong and Richmond set the standard for excellence, precisely a decade apart
I’ve just given you a possible option on changing this by manipulation of the draw.
GGG + reuster75 have also given other alternatives.
There are fixes to these problems just like the AFL found the fix of taxing the richer clubs to help the poorer ones exist.
The AFL is happy to equalise when it suits them.
Only someone who likes being part of a handicap competition where their team is given a leg up would argue against any change.
Geelong and Richmond set the standard for excellence, precisely a decade apart
Of course not.
By no means am I saying this is the answer but an example of how the fixture could be manipulated.
Fremantle plays another home game during the year and one of the clubs with the smallest flight times travels to play them over there.
Evens up total travel time, slightly, of which there are numerous scientific studies showing the detrimental effect of flying and athletic performance.
Surely everyone wants an even competition not a handicap event?
Geelong and Richmond set the standard for excellence, precisely a decade apart
Such a pathetic response “If you don’t like it, feel free to create your own breakaway competition.”
Acknowledgment that there is a huge disadvantage for any team not located in Victoria and more importantly a big MCG club is at the very least a start.
Then we can look at ways to fix it.
This year Richmond was a plane a total of 20 hours and 25 minutes the lowest of any team.
Fremantle by comparison flew for 80 hours and 35 minutes the most of any team.
Geography isn’t something we can fix but the fixture can be manipulated so that gap shortens and starts to creates at least a slightly fairer playing field.
Geelong and Richmond set the standard for excellence, precisely a decade apart
Can’t really blame him I’d be gutted!
Slid into top 4.
Got Geelong at their home ground after a bye.
Got a GWS that had 4 of their best mids missing and went down by 3 points.
Giant result: GWS into grand final after beating Collingwood in a preliminary final thriller

Priority should be to keep M.Allen and

Also everyone keeps harping on about WC needing Rucks.
We have Edwards coming through as well as Hickey, Vardy, Brooksby and NN. Not short in the ruck department.
