Talk about having a whinge. If a team has enough talented midfielders one being tagged wouldn’t matter. Tagging is defending and defending is an art form.

Macaffer reignites the tagging debate

Sydney FC can not really finish second, Melbourne, CCM, Western Sydney and Adelaide would ALL have to not pick up a point, so yes mathematically possible as they ALL play away, however Sydney are 3 goals behind Western Sydney, so they’d need to score more times than Western Sydney concede. Which is possible as they’re playing Melbourne Heart at MRS. But if Adelaide or Mariners drew or Victory won they’d not finish second. SO WHILE the headlines say SYDNEY CAN FINISH SECOND the odds of it happening are 31-1 of them all losing and SFC winning, which doesn’t include a Heart by at least 1 or 2 or Sydney by 1or 2.

Right result, but Sydney FC won't win the A-League

By that logic you’re saying that Ambrose is better than Mayes who is better than Smith. The “>” should be reversed for your sentence to make sense. Just two minutes of pedantry.

Is Patrick Ambrose a star?

AHH the round should finish on Sunday arvo at 8 pm. For Supercoach Sakes! Multis! Tipping! I’m more than happy to have a Thursday – Sunday schedule. Fits in the weekend. Monday for footy like in league is inconvenient really. The split round was even more horrible because it was all based on Freo/GWS/Gold Coast… the least aesthetically pleasing teams in the AFL. It’s a Melbourne game!

The interesting things this year

How Good are Essendon? Some of the best mids going somehow warrants 9th.

How Good is the North Melbourne Midfield? Obviously not nearly as good as Essendon, a team they’re supposed to finish above.

When will Malthouse turn Carlton in to an elite team? (round 18 surely!)

Can Freo play a gmae with 30+ goals in it? Please?

Can the Port Adelaide Hipsters please beat Hawks in a Preliminary Final?

GWS/Sydney/ Gary Brownlow don’t care.

Let's give the split round the boot

Eh, tipped them against Carlton, so I get your point.

Port Adelaide will shock the AFL world and win the flag

don’t all players age? I guess not at Essendon or Cronulla.

Port Adelaide will shock the AFL world and win the flag

They’ve scored the second most in the league… scoring goals is not a problem. #4222works

Is Berisha more trouble than he's worth?

Essendon have one of the best midfields in the competition. Is mental strength a supercoach stat?

AFL ladder prediction 2014: Just missing the eight

Essendon are a better side than ninth. They were challenging for first in round 17 last year and have not lost a lot of key players. Only Crameri really, who couldn’t kick straight. They’re a top four team and so are Richmond. I think Freo will finish 5th or 6th because they have a really tough draw. Hawks, Richmond, Sydney, Essendon, Freo, Port, North Melbourne, Carlton, Collingwood, GC, Adelaide.

Is it weird that a sport prides itself on TV figures? Yeah that means money for the NRL but that doesn’t make it interesting.

“If you’re comparing Channel Nine’s entertainment with the half-time entertainment, it’s obvious who wins hands down.”

Nobody purchases tickets to watch half time entertainment, IMO all ‘entertainment’ should be banned from stadiums, fireworks, loudspeakers and horrible bands… eurgh. I don’t think crowds stay away from the games because they can watch it on TV, Souths/Easts are city teams and they played in ground out west? Every team should have a home ground in principle, instead of shopping around the grounds.

Like why does NRL have so few grounds? In the A League each team has a ground and they play there. Western Sydney play in Western Sydney and Wellington play in Wellington.

The level of advertising is gross. Just look at NRL jersey, too much on it. Than there ads sprayed on to the ground and the side boards and the ball and the REF and the Video Referral. Clean it up.

Where are the NRL crowds?

Demetriou joins list of great men who changed football

Firstly, i’m no V8 fan. If I am watching racing it’s by horses. Although I am fan of the A League and deadseat you replace ‘V8 supercars’ with ‘A-League’ and the article would read the same. The one game a week on a Friday is a luxury. I romantically await the day, sports give the fans what they want however I’m resigned I’m probably going to have to get Foxtel to watch sport. At the moment, I have found a great streaming service… The Jets vs the Western Sydney Pixelated was great watch.

New V8 Supercars broadcast deal is a blow to traditional fan-base

Eh, it comes off as bit of mantra that RBB invented active support. It is so obvious that foxsports and SBS favour the Sydney teams. Melbourne Victory always have had the biggest active support and so do Heart and so does Adelaide. It’s just they are not 2 k’s from the Studios of Fox/SBS so they act like what the RBB are doing is new and exciting. I agree with you that RBB pulled Western Sydney neutrals but the sentence reads ” active support was already well established through The Cove, Northern Terrace and co., it was the sheer numbers and volume of the RBB that captured the attention of neutrals in western Sydney in 2012.” Why would people in Western Sydney care what the Northern Terrace do? WSW success is propelled by the job done by Sydney FC rather than the A League at large.

“While active support was already well established through The Cove, Northern Terrace and co., it was the sheer numbers and volume of the RBB that captured the attention of neutrals in western Sydney in 2012.”

Yeah, naaaaah.

ANSWERS

Q1: Robert Pirès
Q2: Answer as pointed out is iffy, with seven Australians with Croatian descent (Viduka, Skoko, Bresciano, Kalac, Covic, Popovic and Culina) and three Croatians (Didulica, Simunic and Anthony Šerić) according to SBS, 6 were eligible to play for either side. (you know using FIFA laws) Anyone who said 6+ gets a point!
Q3: Armenia can’t play Azerbaijan and Spain can’t play Gibraltar.
Q4:Chris Birchall of Port Vale & Trinidad/Tobago “Birchall is known as ‘Me Mum’… this is because Birchall’s response to a question about his right to play for Trinidad and Tobago was simply “me mum”.
Q5:A company owned by Neymar’s dad. I think Santos and the Tax man got fifty cents.
Q6:Footvolley
Q7:Miralem Pjanić nonchalant no.10 with a beard from a reformed soviet state.
Q8:Marco Senna
Q9: 80 players have Senior National Caps in the A League, they include Adrian Leijer, Matt Smith, Michael Thwaite and not Eddy Bosnar. I don’t even know how that makes sense, any how, Wellington provided around 52 of the selections.
Q10: After the death Christian Benítez, the coach decided they needed Valencia as captain becuase he was close with Christian Benítez and the team needed a new lease of life.
Q11: Nabil Bentaleb, Tottenham was the one I was referring too.
Q12:Iran
Q13: 7.

The Football Hipster's World Cup quiz

It’s in relation to the World Cup. That’s why 10 is about the Ecuadorian Captain, a country that’s done very well recently and participating at this years WC. Number 3 is a trending world football issue, any question that references Brazil, well hey they’re hosting it. Number 13, the team in Australia’s group stage who play a different brand of football, number 16 is about Colombia best player and they are a dark horse as well as nearly hosted the WC, 17 is a question about the 32 teams in the WC Finals, Number 18 is about a team fancied to win the WC with a golden generation of players, and Guam are one the fastest improving teams in the world.

So in short, I don’t get your point.

The Football Hipster's World Cup quiz

I’ll post them tomorrow, give more readers ago. A hint for no.1 he also won the Premier League.

The Football Hipster's World Cup quiz

are there no quick players in the EPL?

Who should lead the Socceroos?

Victory were 2-0 away, against the best team in Asia. That’s not a pasting. WSW did lose 3-1 at home, so I get your point.

Is the FFA Cup promotion and relegation in disguise?

Eh, I more of a traditionalists. I know a soccer game goes for 90 minutes, so when I watch it I get stuck in. I might put a bet on, get take way, at least a coffee or something and I’m generally following the league and am interested in the result, e.g Mabil progress at Adelaide, Wellingtons passing game, WSW tactics. Same with Cricket, rugby and AFL. I even got stuck into Sochi Ice Hockey. I know sport is a product and people want there fix, but do it properly. Test Cricket is great for intrciateies of cricket, some say newbies don’t understand and the game will die. The game won’t die if ‘young people’ can’t be bothered to watch it, because ‘dying’ just means how rich it is. Exact same for Rugby, “Super 15 dying”. Rugby will always exist the Australian psyche, with the backing of HSBC or not.

Some ideas to improve the Auckland Nines

I thought it was dropped so clubs could have autonomy of who they play e.g. Jets going to Malaysia, Perth to South Africa, Sydney to Italy, Liverpool coming to Melbourne. Nah, your idea sounds much more exotic.

A-League ready for pre-season cup return

Why do sports feel the need to reduce the players for a ‘entertainment’? T20, Rugby 7’s… and RL 9’s… don’t find them interesting at all.

Some ideas to improve the Auckland Nines

They should sell him in July. Your article points out he probably will be useless anyway and it give Moyes his own squad to build from because if he goes so is Vidic, Ferdinand and Evra. That’s a huge loss is the dressing room, so pretty much Moyes can pick his generals instead of relying on the old guard who don’t they’re past it. I don’t think Rooney’s skill will be missed anyway, Mata, Januzaj, Van Persie, Wellbeck all can create and score. Besides Manchester United without Champions League can still pay huge wages and cherry pick up and coming players from England and Europe.

Should United really pay Wayne Rooney 300K per week?

Ehhh fabricated problem. It’s an entertainment business. If they wanted every club striving for titles, there’d be relegation, no draft or salary cap.

The NBA tanking debate is a complex one

FoxSports is incredibly bias to Sydney/WSW and so are SBS. The Guardian’s Joe Gorman is the best football reporter in the countryIMHO, and Mike your point that good journalism needs to be paid for… it is. Sounds like a hissy fit at missing out on a job, but your work isn’t that great anyway. It does neither provide further insight in to the game or is funny. However you bang on about being worldly, Russian History, German and Japanese football. Want to write a preview of the ACL games so we can have better look at your speciality?

What does the future hold for Australian football journalism?
