I don’t think going into this tour we should have been expecting great running rugby. The Lions need to have a rethink on their coach selection IMO. Gatland is a very defensive coach that feeds on errors (does not really sell the Lions concept to me). Also, SA are happy to play the defensive brick wall as it has been proven to win them RWCs. World Rugby really does need to sort this mess out with the current ref standards and deal with Erasmus harshly as well. I look at your examples around Ben O’Keefe. I find him the most frustrating ref to watch as he appears to ref depending on his mood. All we can ask for is more consistency from the Refs. Now I am not sure if this means tweaks to the laws to help simplify them or a mindset change for the Refs. Whatever it is, it needs to be done within World Rugby, not on social media.

How Rassie Erasmus (over)ruled World Rugby in the second Test

Unfortunately, I feel that Samu will be another player lost overseas but we will see how the Brumbies coach goes with him as he has an excellent track record at keeping his players. I think you hit the nail on the head with McReight and all our current young guys. We seem to rush them into the Wallabies run-on side when we still have more experienced and honestly better (more complete) players who are being pushed to the side. People have attacked my view on this on other posts but I still believe that we have overestimated the quality of the Super AU competition over the last two seasons and because of this we have rushed players that IMO are Rookies into the Wallabies run-on side when they need more time to develop. To me, they should be on the bench and behind the more experienced established players and given the time to better learn Test level rugby and iron our weakness. I just look at the TT that clearly showed the gap. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the Super AU, just will take time for the standard to lift in these unusual times.

Long story short, I want to see our young guys on the bench more and having the opportunity to learn from the players who have been there before.

No idea what Pete Samu has done to be on the outer.

I do think Valetini would have worked in the 3rd test as run on 6 as well as I don’ think he has been used well. I have issues with Wilson at run on 8 and that they seemed to have been using Wilson to hit up in close over Valentini. This made no sense to me as Wilson is better out wide and Valentini is better in close. A key thing I noticed was Valentini started to do better ball carries when Wilson went of and Isi came on. Aside from Isi very good in close ball carries is his ability to seal the breakdown off. He connects to the in tight ball carrier sealing the ball off and forcing it to be an immediate ruck…IMO this is a big factor in the third test as this took away the opportunity of the “Jackle”. Without Isi in tight the French would have had more opportunity to attack our breakdown.

OR, we picked a backrow who is known for their tight work, not their wide running and we got the result of a backrow, better in tight…..

If they play well they will win regardless of the location.

New Bledisloe fixture sends Aussies to Eden Park twice

Funny how people are surprised by the third test backrow working. It was clear as day. The 1st and 2nd test backrow did not complement each other at all. Backrow must be able to do the hard yards in close as priority before we start thinking of any of them being able to run in the wide channels. This is Test rugby now, not super rugby.

The Bledisloe was in NZ last year wasn’t it and the Rugby Championship was held in Oz?

So that is a real accurate assessment of Gatland and it comes from his partnership with his defensive coach when coaching Wales. Interesting enough that this defensive coach is now the French Defensive coach and it was evident in the French/Wallabies tour. Not so much French flare and lots of defensive grinding.

The Springboks handle the British and Irish Lions 27-9 to level the series

A bit harsh. I would not blame the team for the action of Erasmus. Given the little Test rugby SA has had, you would expect them to get harder to beat in each game.

Yes Harry…but still did not reach this new low of SA…that is how low Erasmus has gone.

'I didn't feel respected': Springboks captain backs Erasmus rant on Aussie ref

Yes, Cheika was a clown in the post game press conference….but no, he did not do a planned video sitting behind a desk for an hour ranting away…reading of a script. And thus, your green tinted glasses are blinding you to the reality of what SA RWC coach has done and that he has now brought his captain down with him.

Was McDermott forearmed in the face by the French 9 to score his try in the French Serious…yes. Did the Wallabies Coach do a giant rant on Video about it…no, did the Wallabies Captain do the same…No….What did the Wallabies coach say in the post game when the media blame the ref for the Red card…. said the ref is one of the best refs in the game, and pointed his finger at the French for acting to milk the penalty and going down like they have been shot by a sniper…..clearly not blaming the ref and clearly not acting like SA.

'I didn't feel respected': Springboks captain backs Erasmus rant on Aussie ref

Yep, definately never acting like this from the Wallabies or RA for that matter. I just look at the French serious…some missed incidents and some clearly confusing calls impacting the games, Wallabies kept to the correct process to deal with it….not this SA rubbish.

Yep, wanting the lions to really give it to SA post all this rubbish.

Hmmm, I think SA need to spend more time focusing on their rugby…

Who said they don’t like him? I made it clear he is excellent with the younger kids so let’s not just say what has not been said. What professional organisation chooses not to recruit senior players in their prime? Call it what you want, the reality is they are not knocking on the Reds door to play for them….that is the reality and you a blinding yourself if you can’t see this for what it is. These young Reds would benefit greatly to have some proper experience in that team and we can all clearly see this. SRAU, great tournament for building the game locally, but don’t fall into the trap of thinking winning it is anywhere near the standard or achievement level of a proper SR tournament. The TT was the reality check of what we have achieved…AU teams won 2 games out of 25…… The young Reds are worth us locally to get excited about, but that excitement is about potential, not where they are right now.

'I haven't spoken to him': Wallabies lock Rodda has no regrets about walking out on Thorn

As I said he struggles when they reach a position of stature. He has kept a team of Rookie together who are all still on their first full professional contract. Thorn is excellent at coaching the young kids coming through, no question. But he has failed to keep and attract top tier senior talent. We have JOC who is past his prime leading the team around. We are literally a team of Rookies with no senior players in their prime. This is a reflection of the coach.

It is a very bizarre thing for Erasmus to do and really should never have happened. I thought coaches and players could be fined over this stuff but might have just been gossip talk. I think of Rennie regarding the French tour. I thought he handled the very pointed ref questions in the post-game interview very well. Made his point without really attacking the ref and kinder put it more on the French players for milking penalties than blaming the refs themselves.

haha, love the title…it is so true.

The game feels over ref to me. TMO jumping in all the time making everyone stand around watching a reply over and over again…just get on with it. I think the TMO should only be brought in if the Ref asks for it and any missed head-high tackles should go to review post-game at the TMO direction. The ref missing a forward pass here and a hand where it shouldn’t be is just part of rugby. It is what gets our blood boiling sometimes and I have myself been fuming about refs missing something, but at the end of the day, it is part of the dark arts of the game and is what gets us fans so fired up when your team is on the wrong end of the scoreline.

Rassie forgets rugby Law 0.0 'all things in rugby are okay as long as the ref misses it!'

Yep, can’t be throwing refs under the bus. Also a ref missing something is part of the game and what gets the heated debates going. I have blown up over a ref call or two in my days 😂

Without refs we don’t have a game so it is a bit of a difficult situation. I don’t think a public outcry by a coach is the way to do it but the flip side, the lack of communication or clarity regarding refs will always frustrate coaches and fans of the game. You can see by this that it is a bit of a pressure cooker situation for Professional coaches these days. I am a Reds Man so it is kinder strang having a ref who appears to give you the rub of the green….it leaves me conflicted 😂

Didn’t see the video of the rant. Just watching some.of the ref standards at the moment I can see why coaches are loosing their cool at the moment. It can be frustrating as a fan so I could not imagine what the coaches are going through.
