It is amazing isn’t it? If O’neill bowled quicker he could have bowled way worse and he probably would have been in an Australian test squad by now. As it stands now, bowling speed is more important than wickets.

Round 7 Sheffield Shield wrap – Who's keeping their spot at the head of the Test queue?

I could see Manenti or Matt Short maybe being chosen as a spinning all-rounder for tests in Asia.
Does Jhye Richardson need to adjust his action a little bit and/or bring his speed back. I am not sure how bad his injury but he just spent nearly 12 months out, played one Shield game, a few big bash games, and got injured again.
For the time being Marsh is justifying his inclusion in the XI with his batting alone so in my opinion we can afford to have another all-rounder, and Green’s bowling is much better than Marsh’s. I just hope Green can get a few more runs.

“You seem to want to jump to white ball stuff because the red ball doesn’t suit.” O’neill outbowled Morris last season in the Shield, and has outbowled him this season, and has a better career average. Red ball suits O’neill beautifully. It just so happens that he has better numbers in white ball cricket too.
You need to look at games played and strike rate.” You literally had games played and strike rate quoted to you and you still say that.

McSweeney has had six good games. It is not enough. Neser has the same average as him this year.

If you are only looking at half a season it is nowhere near enough to know if they are good enough for test cricket. I forgot about hardie though. He is the only one of those I would consider for a test call up. Ollie Davies has played five matches or something. We will have a better idea this time next year, or even in about a month, of how good he is.

Our youth stocks in bowling are much better than our batting. Lance Morris and Will Sutherland both average around 24, Fergus o’neill is in his second season averaging about 22.
These guys are all 25 or younger. I think Sutherland and Morris will both play test cricket for Australia. O’neill is obviously tracking very nicely too. It is a bit less obvious who the next generation of batsmen are. Green probably. Puc maybe if he can stay fit.

It would put an end to Bazball too. Half of their top six’s most productive shot seems to be the top edge that gets nowhere near the middle of the bat but goes for six anyway.

Wow, he is still only 24. He actually still has plenty of time.

Exactly, as far as I am aware no one younger than Renshaw, who is 27, has done anywhere near enough to justify selection in the test team. If there was someone, like Green, I think they would be in the test team.
Where we do have players at least somewhat stepping up is in our bowlers. Morris has been in and out of the test squad so I think it is implied that he is one or two injures away from a debut.

Yeah, there are no 22-year-olds averaging 70 in the Shield. Green and Pucovski are the only two that have gone close to doing that in at least a few years I think.

I would be surprised if Jaiswal or Shubman Gill are not doing a fair bit more in first-class cricket than any of the 22-year-olds in the Shield.
The selectors have a lot of faith in Green. They seem to have faith in Morris too. He is in test squads which I presume means he is an injury or two from a debut.

Yes, some people take it to the extreme where they try to invent a new English word with a Germanic root to replace a latin-based word that does not have a suitable Germanic synonym. I am not a fan of that I do prefer to use, for example, ‘drink’ rather than ‘beverage’, or ‘big house’ rather than ‘mansion’.

OK Don.

Have you heard of Anglish? It is when people preference use Germanic words over latin ones. There are these ideas that it is a bit more logical, simpler, and results in clearer expression.

It is ridiculous. People were taking about dropping Smith before the last west indies Australia test.

I agree that Sutherland has not done enough but what he has done is take more wickets with a better average than Morris despite far fewer opportunities with a new ball, and a lot of people want to see Morris in the test team. Sutherland also has a century and two 50s while Morris has a high score of 14. Bartlett is way back and Johnson has hardly even played.

Yeah, but if South Africa last 100 overs in the second innings then suddenly NZ have spent two straight days in the field and their bowlers have all bowled 40 overs in less than two days when they simply could have chosen not to. Better to just bat for a couple of sessions and let the bowlers rest.

'We were completely outplayed': Zero surprises as Saffers' 3rd XI thrashed by New Zealand

I think people are talking about young bowlers. I do not think that Paris is too old but he is not the next generation like Richardson, O’neill, Bartlett, and Morris.

Our worst fears are realised - South Africa's shocker across the ditch is bringing Test cricket into disrepute

I am pretty sure than the Indian Cricket Board would never schedule a test series while the IPL is on. This does not mean that the IPL is ‘sad’. I think Australia and India are the only countries that play test cricket while their respective T20 seasons are running.

Jhye Richardson is injured.

Boland left the field in the first innings against South Australia but returned in the second innings and bowled 16 overs. I would be surprised if there was anything wrong.

How are selections made? Was there state second XI cricket, or Perth grade cricket on during the Big Bash? I have watched Wyllie bat and he looks alright.
